I visited Wai Kai on Oahu recently — and I was one of the first mainland writers to spend some time at this exciting new complex. I was thrilled to enjoy a half day at this fabulous new destination. It offers several cool and adrenaline-boosting activities and things to do besides the wave pool. I want to share my personal experience visiting, as well as surfing the wave pool!

The Wai Kai entertainment complex opened on Oahu, Hawaii in early 2023 and it’s a new, exciting, and fun destination featuring Hawaii’s first and only high-tech wave pool, called The Lineup. The Wai Kai wave is the world’s largest deep-water standing surf wave — and certainly something to see. It’s an impressive 100-feet wide, uses state-of-the-art technology and has attracted many surfers (from beginner to the pros) since it first opened. If you love to surf, you must check it out!

Scroll down to see of video of me surfing the wave pool!

In addition to the wave pool, Wai Kai also has several restaurants, and an expansive 52-acre recreational lagoon (with stand-up paddleboards, floating couches, kayaks, and other fun toys). There’s also a stylish gift shop with many locally-made items, and a luxurious, spacious locker room with showers and amenities.

What does Wai Kai mean in the Hawaiian language?

What does “Wai Kai” mean? The name Wai Kai has a lovely Hawaiian meaning that signifies the blending of two waters. The word, “wai,” means “water” (the essence of life) and the word kai, in Hawaiian, refers to the ocean. Therefore, Wai Kai is the place where the Pacific Ocean meets the water from the island’s nearby mountains.

Where is Wai Kai located on Oahu?

The Wai Kai entertainment complex is located in Ewa Beach, which is on the western side of the island of Oahu. The area is much less populated than Honolulu. It’s about 25 miles from Waikiki and is about a 45-minute drive from the city, without traffic.

Planning to visit Oahu? Check out my post about where to stay and the BEST hotels in Waikiki! (PLUS travel tips!)

Wai Kai is located 18 miles from the HNL airport (aka, the Daniel K. Inouye International) airport, and it’s about a 20-minute drive from there. For information and details, visit the Wai Kai website.

How to get to Wai Kai on Oahu?

Wai Kai is located about 25 miles from Waikiki, but it can easily take an hour to reach this destination during busy times, as the island is known for its traffic issues.

Ideally, if you live on Oahu or have a rental car, it’s best to drive there, because you can arrive and leave on your own schedule and not have to deal with a taxi or rideshare.

For my visit, we took a Lyft (rideshare) from Waikiki to the Wai Kai complex around 9 a.m. on a weekday in June and the cost was $80 each way. Since Wai Kai is so far from Honolulu and we needed to be back in the city at a certain time, we reserved a Lyft in advance for the return as well – and we were glad we did. There are not a lot of rideshare drivers hanging around this area, as it’s not as busy as Honolulu.

Important to note…the neighborhood where Wai Kai is located is very residential – you’ll drive past many homes as you approach the entrance. Wai Kai is not near any other tourist attractions that are walkable. It’s not walkable to shops or anything else, although plans are in the works for a future hotel.

Fortunately for us, our Lyft driver who picked us up happened to live on the “West side,” which means he lives close to Wai Kai, but keep in mind this area is not as populated as Honolulu and Waikiki, so rides may not be easy to get.

Does Wai Kai have a shuttle? Yes, Wai Kai also offers a shuttle service from Waikiki. However, the times change depending on the season, and you must get your shuttle reservation / ticket in advance. Look at the website for details and be sure to check their shuttle times and schedule or call Wai Kai directly if you are planning to take the shuttle to the complex.

Planning a visit to Waikiki, Oahu? Check out my post about where to stay and the BEST hotels in Waikiki! (PLUS travel tips!)

How to surf the wave pool at Wai Kai (the Line-Up)

Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or expert surfer, Wai Kai is a great place to visit!

I had a fun surfing lesson at Wai Kai – with a very helpful instructor — and highly recommend giving it a try. Here is what to expect!

Here’s a video of me surfing the wave pool at Wai Kai in June 2023

This video is not my first attempt, as I had a patient instructor helping me at first. (This video was taken by my husband, who stood on the outdoor terrace / platform at the The Lookout restaurant).

After signing up in advance, I was given a locker in the gorgeous, modern women’s locker room. It’s super clean and really feels like a five-star spa with plenty of amenities, so I highly recommend checking it out! I was also given a specific-colored rash guard, which is how they keep track of the surfers in the pool — and your time limit in the pool. (This means that you don’t need to bring your own rashguard).

Wave pool surfers must watch a short safety video that shows participants how the pool works. The instructor will go over the basics, including very specific instructions on what to do (and what not to do), what happens when you fall off your board (which you will!) and how to get up and back in line after you fall. There are several safety precautions to be aware of, so you will learn all of that before stepping into the pool.

Up close, I found the wave pool is much louder (and much larger) than it appears to be. My instructor guided me onto the pool and held my hands as we floated onto the center of the wave. He was fantastic – and gave me exact, step-by-step instructions on where to look where to place my weight, how to move and how to turn. After a few tries with the instructor, I was able to try it myself!

Is Wai Kai worth it?

Is a visit to Wai Kai worth it? Yes, Wai Kai is worth a visit if you are on Oahu and enjoy water activities! Wai Kai has a sprawling, protected lagoon and is also home to the largest wave pool in the world (where you can take a surfing lesson or just sign up for an “open surf”), so it will certainly be a memorable experience!

You’ll have a great experience at Wai Kai! You can take a number of lessons here, such as surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding — if you book in advance. It’s also an excellent place to learn about water safety and get a feel for basics of these sports before you go out in the ocean or try these activities on your own.

It’s a great spot for a group outing as well, as the Wai Kai facility can help you plan some fun group activities for your family, friends or corporate group.

Wai Kai makes everything convenient because you can also enjoy a lunch or dinner here and you don’t need to drive anywhere to find a meal or a snack.

What if you don’t want to get into the wave pool? No worries! And if you choose not to try the wave pool, you can just watch the surfing action from above from the viewing platform at The Lookout bar and restaurant, while enjoying a snack or beverage. This is also the best place for your friends or family members to take video of you as you surf on the wave pool.

Things to do at Wai Kai

Wai Kai has many fun activities in addition to surfing their famous wave pool. Here’s a quick list of the many things to do at Wai Kai:

Is the Wai Kai Lagoon open to the public?

The Wai Kai lagoon is a beautiful destination with over 52 acres of calm inland water, protected from the ocean. It’s a fun destination with a full staff that offers a selection of water activities. These include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), hydro bikes, outrigger canoe rides, pedal-boarding, Duffy boats, paddle boats and more!

You’ll need to go to The Dock at the LineUp when you arrive for your pre-arranged water activities or ideally, it’s best to visit the Wai Kai website to sign up for the lagoon activities in advance.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://marlacimini.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Floating-cabanas-Wai-Kai-1024x768.jpg" alt="Floating luxury cabanas at Wai Kai on the lagoon on a sunny day.
You can also sign up for lessons for any of the lagoon activities. Note: children must be accompanied by an adult and there are age restrictions, so be sure to confirm this before your visit.

If you don’t want to get wet, there’s also floating cabanas and a dock with comfortable seating where you can watch lagoon activities, enjoy the stunning waterfront views (and maybe sip a coffee or beverage)!

Deciding between a visit to Maui and The Big Island? Read my ultimate guide to help you decide!

How much does Wai Kai cost?

How much does it cost to visit Wai Kai? Prices at Wai Kai vary, depending upon what you decide to do while you are there! You can visit Wai Kai and just walk around and take a look at the amenities, but here’s a breakdown of prices for possible activities:

Surf the LineUp / Wave Pool: The pricing for Wai Kai changes. Currently on the Wai Kai website, the cost is surf the 100-foot wave for $75 dollars; and the 65-foot wave for $65 dollars (see discount codes)!

First-timers should plan to take a lesson. You can schedule a lesson in advance. It’s $100 for a 45-minute surf lesson. (Be sure to check out special offers and other (non-lesson) surf options on the website.

Lagoon activities: These prices vary and are listed under each activity. It’s $80 for a single kayak.

Locker rentals (recommended) can be arranged in advance and are $5 per visit.

Restaurant prices (these prices vary). You can have a quick coffee or snack at the Boardwalk Café, a lunch at the Lookout (above the wave pool) or an upscale lunch or dinner at the Plaza Grill. We had a delicious seafood lunch outdoors on the terrace overlooking the lagoon at the Plaza Grill.

Things to know before you visit Wai Kai on Oahu

Before you plan to visit or spend the day at Wai Kai, there are a few things you should know:

You’ll need to sign a waiver before participating in any activities. Wai Kai requires a signed waiver, and you can do that electronically. Everything here is age-appropriate, so check on the activities available to children if you are traveling here as a family.

Wai Kai is a busy place! It features events throughout the week and month. They have women’s only nights, farmers’ markets, musical events, night-time paddle events, beer and wine festivals — and other special happenings. Be sure to check if there’s a special event on the day (or evening) you plan to visit.

Check to see if their shuttle bus is running from Waikiki. Wai Kai offers a shuttle bus at certain times, which may vary, depending on the day or time of year. Be sure to check on this when you make your plans.

Dining at Wai Kai

Yes, you can eat at Wai Kai! There are three separate restaurants with lots of options from super-casual to more upscale. So if you decide to spend a full day here, you can sip a morning coffee (or enjoy breakfast) and also have lunch and dinner at Wai Kai. Restaurants and cafes include: The Lookout Food and Drink; Foam Coffee Bar; The WaveBar, Halia By Side Street Inn; and Sidewalk Cafe.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://marlacimini.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/coffee-shop-wai-kai-1024x768.jpg" alt="The coffee shop at Wai Kai - interior on Oahu, Hawaii.
And yes, there’s a very cool gift shop at Wai Kai with an array of fun items — and it sells bathing suits, sunblock, hats, and other water-related items in case you forget to bring your own!

Finally, if you visit Wai Kai, be sure to plan for traffic! Yes, Oahu has a lot of traffic. Before you visit, be aware that rush hour in and out of Honolulu is consistently very busy, so plan for traffic accordingly.

These top skateboarding helmets and protective gear will keep you safe at the skatepark all year long!

Choosing the best skateboarding safety gear for women and adults

As an adult re-learning to skateboard, I’ve tried several safety gear items over the past few years — and learned a lot in the process. Most adult skaters know that safety gear is important, but it can be a challenge to choose the right items. There are so many safety products available! This means that it can be a bit overwhelming to figure out exactly what you need and decide on the best items that fit properly. This article is focusing on the best skateboard safety gear for women and adults. I’ve received a lot of questions about this, so I’m sharing my personal recommendations.

For female skateboarders, it can be more difficult to find the right fit because these safety products are not made specifically for women. (Hopefully, this will change in the future!)

So, whether you’re an adult skater regularly dropping into bowls and catching air, or a beginner skater starting to roll down ramps (or pushing around on your own driveway ), it’s important to have the proper safety gear.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://marlacimini.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Skateboard-Cimini-Nov2022-1024x768.jpg" alt="Female skateboarder wearing a green shirt at a San Diego skate park.

How to select the best skateboarding protective gear

Where do you start shopping for skateboarding gear? First, do some online research! See which gear is the most highly rated. Ideally, if you have a skateboard shop (or roller skating shop) near your home, it’s always best to visit in person. You can actually try on the gear, pads, and helmets, as you may be surprised at the various sizing options offered by the different brands. All skateboarding pads are definitely not created equal! You may actually fit into several sizes. If you go to a skate shop in person, someone will be there to help show you the different pads and determine the best fit for you.

Be sure to ask a lot of questions at the skate shop, because chances are, the owners and salespeople have used the safety equipment themselves.

A special note for parents: Although it might be tempting to use your kid’s safety gear (if it fits you), don’t do it! It’s essential to have your own stuff, sized correctly, of course. Gear made for adults is developed for larger people and is tested for adult use. So squeezing into your kid’s or teenager’s knee or elbow pads is not a good idea.

Here are a few of my personal safety gear product recommendations. I have worn all of these items myself and I highly recommend them!

Fortunately, skateboard shoes are the most fun accessory to purchase. The best skateboarding sneakers for women are, in my opinion, Cariuma! They are eco-friendly, vegan, and gender-neutral. Plus, they are super-stylish and are offered in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and fits. These sneakers are the most comfortable, cushy fit I’ve experienced in a skate shoe — and I often wear them even when I’m not skating. I have two pairs of Cariuma and I absolutely love these shoes!

First and foremost, skateboarders need to wear a helmet. You ride a bike with a helmet, so why not wear one for skateboarding? I know several adult skaters who won’t step on a board without a helmet securely fastened — and many adult skaters agree that a helmet is the first thing you should buy.

Before purchasing a helmet for skateboarding, check to be sure it is ASTM F1492 certified, and it’s even better if the helmet is dual certified, which means it meets both ASTM and CPSC standards. The helmet’s original packaging and inside sticker should clearly state this certification. If not, don’t purchase it! You can learn all about the certification here, as well as everything you can ever want to know about skateboarding helmets (and bike helmets, too).

I have three favorite skateboarding helmets:

Triple Eight certified sweat saver helmet for skateboarding gets rave reviews and is available in many colors. Triple Eight is a company that’s known for skateboard equipment, as well as products for biking, roller skating, snowboarding, etc.

Pro-Tec Classic certified skate helmet has been my go-to helmet for several years, as it’s a very comfortable fit. Overall, it feels very snug yet light, has adjustable straps, and is available in a number of sizes and colors. The Pro-Tec company is committed to safety, and also produce a wide array of helmets for several other sports.

Thousand helmets. I love the look and feel of Thousand helmets, with their signature visor on the front. This is a relatively newer brand, and they offer some very cool and distinctive styles, unique colors and more options, such as vegan leather straps. This company also promotes their high safety standards and carefully-constructed products.

Helmet Tips

The Triple Eight, Thousand and Pro-Tec helmets are rated highly in their reviews. If you want to “fit in” with the crowd at the skatepark and wear a standard helmet, you may want to choose Pro-Tek, while if you want to stand out and look a bit stylish, choose Thousand.

It’s important to note that helmets are created to withstand a few minor hits, and you can continue to use your helmet after a not-to-intense fall, but if you take a big spill or a few repeated falls, be sure to purchase a new one.

Best wrist guards for skateboarding

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://marlacimini.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/wrist-guards-Cimini-1024x768.jpg" alt="Skateboarding wrist guards on a beige concrete background.

A word about wrist guards…

Even if you don’t wear any other safety gear or pads, I suggest wearing wrist guards and make them an automatic part of your regular skate sessions. As I’m sure you’re aware, if you take a fall, it’s natural to put your wrists out first, which can quickly result in injury because your body weight is transferred directly to your wrists.

I have several sets of wrist guards, primarily because my first pair wore out, and then I was traveling and wanted to skate, so I purchased another pair, which are slip-ons. Turns out, those didn’t fit the best, because I wear an Apple iwatch and they are slightly difficult to pull them over. So now I have a new pair with velcro straps, 187 Killer Pads. I wear these wrist guards and prefer the velcro straps instead of the slip-ons.

The velcro straps allow you to easily remove, loosen, tighten or adjust them (or look at the time if you’re wearing a watch). The slip-ons have a snug fit, but they require you to take the entire wrist guard off and you can’t loosen or tighten it.

Best knee and elbow pads for skateboarding

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://marlacimini.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Knee-and-elbow-skateboard-Cimini-1024x768.jpg" alt="An image of Pro-Tec black knee and elbow pads on the ground facing up.

It’s self-explanatory that knee and elbow pads are a must for skateboarders because (let’s face it), falls can happen at any time and you definitely want to protect your knees and elbows. If possible, try on the knee and elbow pads from a few brands and compare sizes and fit.

It’s important to check the straps so you have a secure fit, and be sure to choose the knee pads that offer a “sleeve” or a sock (where you actually put the foot through the pad instead of just wrapping it around). This means it’s easier to put them on / off before you put your skate shoes on. Sure, these knee pads take longer and can be a pain to put on and take off, but they will be more secure on your body.

Another popular brand is REKD and this company gets great reviews, too. Here’s a link to their highly rated Heavy Duty Triple Pad set that’s ergonomically correct.

Please note…none of these pads are “standard.” None of these products are made “especially” for women. (For example, you may be a size small in the legs and a medium in the arms.) You may have to try a few and mix and match.

Best skateboard shoes and sneakers for women and adults

Yes, you need skateboarding shoes when you skateboard! And yes, they are made very differently from running sneakers. Skateboard shoes are more than meets the eye and you can spend a lot of time researching the perfect shoe for you. The main difference is that skateboarding sneakers are made with a flat sole that easily grips the skateboard and absorbs shocks. The highest quality skateboarding shoes are well made and have a lot of necessary details: toe caps, strong heel support, and solid stitching.

When you begin looking at skate shoes, you’ll see many styles and brands. Some skaters have a closet full of skate shoes in a variety of colors, patterns and high and low tops.

Top skate shoe companies for skateboarders

My two favorite skate shoe brands are:

Cariuma: A popular brand, Cariuma International is vegan, stylish and environmentally friendly. In fact, they launched their own reforestation program in the country of Brazil, which is the founder’s home country. So, when you purchase a pair of their sustainable sneakers from this ethically-focused company, they plant two trees in the Brazilian rainforest. (I have two pairs of these awesome shoes and I’m very happy with them!)

⮕Click here to buy Cariuma skateboard sneakers!

The Cariuma brand looks great — from the city to the beach — and offers a variety of different styles, and some specific types for women – a big plus.

All their shoes are incredibly comfortable, featuring memory foam and a superior grip. They also offer free returns, which is another added bonus for skaters.

Cariuma also partners with other eco-friendly companies and offer so many cool designs — so they are worth checking out!

Vans. You’ve probably heard of the legendary skateboarding shoe company, Vans, based in Southern California, and it’s worth looking at their vast collection of sneakers that are made for the sport and come in a truly endless array of unisex styles, materials, colors and patterns. In fact, you can even design your own skate shoes on their website, (look for “Vans Customs), which is really fun and allows you completely personalize your shoes, including the laces and the stitching.

Vans high top sneakers in white

Generally speaking, suede skateboarding shoes are considered the most durable, especially if you’re into more technical aspects of skating, and like to try tricks. Canvas shoes usually don’t last as long, but they are perfectly fine if you’re cruising, just learning and not doing anything too technical.

Just like any other shoes, different brands fit differently. It’s best to try on the skateboarding shoes before purchasing them. So try a number of different shoes and brands to find your best, most comfortable fit (and if you’re interested in learning more about skateboarding shoes specifically for wide or narrow feet, read more here at SkateboardersHQ).

In my opinion, skateboarders might want to consider a pair of high-top skateboarding shoes, as they offer extra ankle support and simultaneously protect your ankles from getting slammed with a fast-rolling board. (It happens more often than you might think – and I have personal experience with this!)

High tops are not guaranteed protection from a sprained ankle, but it’s better than no protection at all. And some skateboard shoes actually have thick, padded ankle protection, so check out the tops carefully and be sure to purchase the shoes that work best for you.

If you’re not a fan of high-tops, you can try a pair of mid-tops, as they still offer “some” ankle protection, but still give you the feel and movement of a low-top. OR — just purchase a pair of ankle protectors! See below…

Best ankle protectors for skateboarding

As mentioned, please wear high-top skateboarding shoes! But if for some reason you’re not wearing high-top sneakers, please consider wearing ankle protectors! These slide between the shoe and your foot with a thin strap and offer additional protection on your ankle. They also protect the front and back of your foot. These G-Form Pro Ankle Guards are slim and stay in place — a wise choice for any skater not wearing high-tops.

Best and most comfortable skateboarding socks

It’s time to re-think your socks! You may want to try a few options. There are many to choose from, so go ahead and test some to see what works for you. Cariuma has some great socks to go along with their comfortable and cool sneakers.

Hip / butt / bum pads for women for adult skateboarders

For additional protection, while skateboarding, hip, butt, and bum pads are an excellent choice for peace of mind and a softer impact when you fall. These pads are essentially a pair of shorts that are completely padded in front, back and side that you put on under your workout / skate pants. They will soften your fall and make a noticeable difference, especially if you’re trying new tricks or attempting new ramps at the skatepark.

The only negative is that these types of pads will cause you to sweat a bit, and can be uncomfortable in the summer months. But that’s a small price to pay for this extra level of safety. Besides, these pads have a big upside because they keep you warm during colder weather. So this is an added bonus.

Although they might make you feel a bit puffy, they really are not noticeable at all! Wear them under a slightly-larger sized black workout pants or sweatpants if you don’t want them visible. And remember, no one is looking at you at the skatepark, except your friend taking your awesome skate videos!

Inspiring surfing books for women of all ages

Costa Mesa, California-based surfing instructor Vanessa Yeager is the founder of the popular Facebook Group, “Women who surf,” which has grown exponentially in the past few years. She understands firsthand the value of female support in surfing — in the water as well as on the shore. She says, “I think it is important for women to read surfing books written by women — because we share a similar wavelength and lifestyle. Plus, it feels great to support my fellow ‘sea sisters’.”

Dr. Julia Colangelo, Columbia University professor (and “Flow Surfers” podcaster) says, “The unique experiences shared by women surfers empower us to explore the mindset shifts, success, and challenges faced uniquely by women in the water. Surfing books written by women allow conversations and community to be amplified outside of the surf, which then brings us back in connection when we surf alongside one another or are cheering on from afar…”

She continued, “When we read from female surf authors, we are instantly reminded that there’s a place for us in the surf community, on the next set of waves, or in the waves of life that may introduce challenges and stress. Just like surfing can empower and heal us, reading from women surfers can do the same.”

Book recommendations for beach lovers and surfers!

Check out these surf books written by female surfers at several stages of life, as they will immediately transport you to the beach for a much-needed dose of “vitamin sea”! And PS…These wonderful books are available on Amazon and are excellent gifts for yourself or the surfer in your life!

Wave Woman: The life and struggles of a surfing pioneer

I was fortunate enough to meet the lovely author Vicky Heldreich Durand in person on the island of Oahu, Hawaii in early March 2020 – just a few days before the COVID-19 shutdown occurred throughout the United States. I was in Hawaii researching the chapters I was writing for the Fodor’s Travel Guide for Oahu (see details about that guidebook here).

Vicky and I had breakfast together outside on the beautiful terrace of the iconic Halekulani Hotel overlooking the legendary Waikiki beach on my last day on the island. In retrospect, I’m so glad we had the opportunity to connect in person…She kindly gave me an autographed copy of her book, Wave Woman: The life and struggles of a surfing pioneer (Sparkpress). I started reading it on my flight home and couldn’t put it down!

Wave Woman is an intriguing biography of her mother, Betty Pembroke Heldreich, who moved to Hawaii in the 1950s when she was in her early 40s (with the author and her younger sister in tow), and quickly fell in love with surfing. After learning to surf and overcoming obstacles, she became an early female surfing pioneer, won a number of awards (including the annual Makaha International Surfing Championship) and traveled far and wide for competitions.

Mural on Oahu, Hawaii of a woman surfing with a shark.

Although she was well known in Hawaii’s surfing circles at the time, Betty was nearly forgotten by history, until her daughter, Vicky (a talented surfer as well), decided to write this exceptional biography and share it with the world.

The book reveals many aspects of Betty’s (and Vicky’s) lives prior to their arrival in Hawaii, as well as their move to the islands and their time adjusting to (and embracing) the “aloha” lifestyle. Focusing on Betty’s effervescent spirit and optimistic attitude, the book chronicles her life, various relationships and surfing adventures. Most of all, the book is a fascinating time capsule that beautifully captures Waikiki and the Hawaiian surfing community from an earlier era — the 1950s and beyond.

Rockaway: Surfing headlong into a new life

In this captivating book, Rockaway: Surfing Headlong into a new life, New York Times reporter and author Diane Cardwell writes about her initial curiosity while watching longboarding surfers and her persistence in learning to surf as an adult. Rockaway (HMH) chronicles her move from New York City to the sleepy beach town of Rockaway, New York a few years ago to improve her skills. In an effort to live the ultimate surfing lifestyle, she purchases a small bungalow, makes new friends and does her best to surf just about every day — devoting much of her time to learning all about the ocean, tides, and catching waves.

Her story is filled with her many challenges while becoming a true “surfer” and getting to know Rockaway’s longboarding community. She openly discusses shredding the fears that come along with the ocean and surfing.

She also writes (in terrifying detail) her firsthand experience with the massive east coast hurricane, Superstorm Sandy, which left major devastation in its path to much of the local coastline in New York and New Jersey in October 2012. In its aftermath, Cardwell actively helped to rebuild the town after its devastation – and she continues to live there today. Not surprisingly, she surfs all the time!

The Best tips for adult skateboarders: Adult beginners, women skaters — and everyone who skates alone and wants to make new #skatefriends

By Marla Cimini

If you’re an adult skateboarder, especially a new skater, the skatepark can be an intimidating place.

As the admin of a women’s all-inclusive Facebook skateboarding group, Women’s Skateboard Community, I’ve learned that many adult skateboarders sometimes experience anxiety and trepidation about entering a skatepark. So, I created some tips for making friends at a skatepark below. (Updated for 2025!!) The most challenging part is actually taking the first step and going to a local skatepark…and after you do it a few times, it gets much easier!

Skaters know that skateboarding is more than a sport — it’s a culture and a lifestyle. And making friends at the skatepark can lead to real friendships, too. These pals can introduce you to other skaters, help you master tricks — and cheer you on when you try something new.

Author Marla Cimini (right) and Kyoko Sugimoto Hicks at the Venice Beach skatepark in May 2022.

So the next time you decide to go to a skatepark, please don’t sit just in your car and watch the skaters – get out there and enjoy yourself! You’ll be glad you did! (And here’s my suggestions for the best safety gear for women and adults)!

Tips for adults who want to make friends at the skatepark

Top tip: Go skateboarding in the morning! Many adults (and adult beginners especially) prefer to go to skateparks in the a.m., especially during the week. It’s usually less crowded and there are no children around because they are all in school. Check your local parks and see what time they open, as some parks are locked in the evening.

Watch the other skaters for a “short” while before entering the park and starting to skate, especially if you are a beginner. Be aware of the environment and the vibe at the park. If it’s super-crowded or it appears to be an aggressive skate environment, it might be best to choose another time.

Say hello and introduce yourself to other adult skaters, as the opportunity arises. Challenge yourself to start a friendly conversation. You’ll find out right away if the other skater(s) wants to engage.

Challenge yourself to go to the skatepark three times in one week! Be consistent and patient! You may not meet a new friend on your first few skatepark visits, but if you go to a skatepark a few times and focus on your own progression, you never know who you might meet.

Embrace your community!

TIP: Check out the best safety gear for women!

Stop by your local skate shop and use them as a resource. Ask them about adult lessons and inquire if there are any women’s / adult skate groups in the area. Even if they don’t offer lessons, they should know what’s going on in the skateboarding community.

Volunteer at skate meet-ups for kids or events. Check your local community calendar and see if you can volunteer at a future meet-up. You’ll meet a lot of skaters of all ages, and many skateboarding parents, too.

After you get to know a few adult skaters and / or plan a meet-up, bring packaged snacks (such as energy bars) to the skate park to share with your new friends. (A little kindness goes a long way!)

Women who love skateboarding share stories in 2025

Adult women who skateboard are embracing this sport for a number of reasons. Some skated as kids but had no female role models or girlfriends to skate with. Others decided to give skateboarding a whirl when their own children expressed interest and they found themselves at skateparks or in their streets or driveways.

Melanie Bartlett and Marla Cimini at the FDR Skatepark in Philadelphia. Photo by Gary Fulk.

Women who skateboard in Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, Melanie Bartlett stepped on a board for the first time about three years ago, at age 40 after her then-five-year-old daughter began taking lessons at Skate the Foundry, an indoor skate park in the city. She had been wanting to try skateboarding for many years and never had the opportunity. Melanie explained, “Over the span of a few weeks, as I saw my daughter learning, I was inspired. I learned that skateboarding could be broken down into steps that made it more accessible and less intimidating. Then I bought myself a skateboard, safety gear — and the rest is history. I love it and I’m empowered by each little skate goal I conquer.”

As Melanie progressed, she fostered friendships with skaters of all levels and ages, whom she refers to as her “crew.” She plays an integral role in organizing meet-ups in parks around Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Her time spent at the skateparks has certainly paid off…not only does she have many new friends, but she’s also featured in the upcoming film, “Skate Femme” by Ryan Doherty and Anna Danielle Moore, scheduled to be released in 2021.

Melanie loves to cheer on other new skateboarders and has been instrumental in encouraging Skate the Foundry, a private indoor Philly skatepark, to introduce adult lessons over two years ago – a first in the city. Skate the Foundry owners (and husband and wife team) Brett Williams and Yui Matsuzaki soon discovered that most of the adult students who signed up for classes were female.

Learning to skateboard as an adult

If you’re interested in learning how to skate, start with your local skate shop and see if they can offer some advice. There are a number of indoor skate parks, such as “Skate the Foundry” in Philadelphia that offer adult skating lessons, both private and small groups.

Here’s a photo of the inside of Skate the Foundry in Philadelphia:

Skate the Foundry in Philadelphia, PA

Women’s skateboarding inspiration

Older skaters, Jean says, are go-getters (both inside and outside of the half-pipe). “What surprised me about skateboarding is how motivated and helpful many of those ‘older’ skaters are. I skate with friends who started in their 40s, or returned to skating after years away. Many of these people have started skate-related charities, hosted skate events and created skate companies – all while still holding down full time jobs.”

Women who skateboard – practice makes perfect

A few years ago, when I visited Los Angeles, I connected with a fabulous and friendly skateboarder, Kay, who lives in the city. She always wanted to skateboard and started in her late 40s. She’s been documenting her skate progress on Instagram, so I contacted her and we met up on a sunny morning at a skatepark she chose because she knew it was less crowded and easier for beginners. She was a blast to skate with — and very inspiring. On subsequent visits, I met up with her at a number of Los Angeles-area skateparks and it’s always so much fun! We even skated at the world-famous Venice Beach skatepark. She’s still skating almost every day…If I lived in LA, I would be skating with her more often! (See the photo of took of Kay and her friend at an LA skatepark below).

Skateboarders of all ages who wish to meet up with others worldwide, join this Facebook group:

I started this inclusive facebook group for women of all ages: It’s called “women skateboard community – all ages, all levels welcome”. Hope to see you there!

With sandy beaches, bustling boardwalks, and fun activities, the Jersey Shore is the Philadelphia area’s most popular destination during the summer. Approximately 60 miles from Philly, it’s where many residents head to escape the heat when the temperature rises. Despite what you might remember from the infamous “Jersey Shore” reality TV series, each town along the 200-mile Jersey coast is vastly different—so do what the locals do and take a ride “down the shore” in the summer. From wild nightlife to casual vibes to upscale living, these Southern New Jersey beach towns have what you’re looking for.

With the majestic Diamond Head State Monument as a backdrop, Waikiki beach is a legendary surf spot, as the beautiful turquoise rolling waves offer seemingly endless fun rides on longboards. It’s all about the waves in Waikiki, you can easily rent a board as soon as you step on the sand and you’ll be paddling out (and learning to cross-step) in no time at all. Experienced instructors (traditionally called “Beach Boys” here) offer lessons at Waikiki Beach Services in front of the Royal Hawaiian Resort or other locations along this notoriously busy beach. You can surf year-round in Waikiki without a wetsuit, and summer traditionally brings larger swells. The best part? Everything is close-by: hotels, restaurants, shops, and fun, casual beach bars for that refreshing after-surf tropical cocktail.

The stunning Hawaiian island of Maui (also known as the “Valley Isle”) is a premier surfing destination offering an array of great places to catch waves—surrounded by palm trees, mountains, and crystal blue water. Home to several world-class surfing events that draw tons of avid fans, Maui’s biggest waves crash at Pe’ahi (famously known for the massive “Jaws” surf break). For casual surfers or to take surfing lessons, be sure to check out Goofy Foot surf school near the bustling town of Lahaina or Maui Surfer Girls at Ukumehame Beach Park.
Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii

The island of Oahu’s famous north shore is known far and wide in the surf community for its massive winter waves, and it’s the location for several major surfing competitions that draw pros and spectators from around the world. Annually from November to March, the waves at Banzai Pipeline and other area breaks are incredible and can reach well over 35 feet high. As such, only experienced surfers should hit the water in the winter. If you plan to go, start out early because this area gets a lot of traffic when the surf is pumping. In summer, however, the waters here are usually calm and mellow—ideal for a tranquil beach day with some snorkeling or stand-up paddleboarding. Most north shore beaches offer some type of basic facilities, such as picnic tables, showers, and restrooms, but it’s best to check in advance.

Huntington Beach (Surf City, USA), California

Famously known as “Surf City, USA,” Huntington Beach is located about an hour’s drive south of Los Angeles and offers a big dose of the cool Southern California beach vibe that surfers and beachgoers crave. If you know your stuff, you can show off your expertise by paddling out by the pier near the center of town—or you can sign up for lessons at schools in the area. The ocean here is chilly, so plan to wear a wetsuit most of the year.

When you’re not hanging out on the beach, you can keep busy with a number of ocean-related activities. Check out some local surf shops to purchase your own board—and don’t miss the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum for some fascinating surf history.

Punta de Mita, Mexico

Tranquil and rustic, with expansive beaches, the lovely Punta de Mita is a truly awe-inspiring coastal region in mainland Mexico. It’s home to several popular surfing beaches with sapphire water and golden sand, including La Bahia (“The Cove”), Palmitas, and La Lancha, which is considered the most consistent wave in the area. This shoreline has breaks that are optimal for both long and short-boarders, so be sure to do a bit of research before choosing your location.

Situated about 40 miles from Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita is an ideal day trip that’s not far from the city—and lessons and board rentals can be arranged at a variety of local surf shops.
La Jolla, California

Further down the California coast is the lovely, laid-back town of La Jolla, home of the famous “Windansea” surf break, a historical spot that’s steeped in surf culture. Although this wave is for experienced ocean riders only, it’s fun to admire the surf from the paved walkway that stretches above the beach, with access points tucked away in a residential neighborhood (though there are no facilities here). For those who wish to surf easier conditions, head to La Jolla Shores, an area on the northern part of town that’s beginner-friendly and features several places to rent boards and take lessons (including Surf Diva). This area is usually crowded with shops and there are plenty of amenities, food stands, and restrooms.

Portugal

With over 1,000 miles of dramatic coastline, Portugal is home to several picturesque surf breaks up and down the stunning shore, providing an array of beaches that draw avid surfers all year long. From rugged and rocky ocean-scapes to wide sandy coves, Portugal is a fantastic destination for beach lovers and avid shredders. In winter, adventurous big wave pros head to Nazare, a town that’s famous for some of the largest and most powerful waves in the world. There are also a number of surf camps based throughout the country that caters to all levels, so it’s easy to find lessons on a beach that offers plenty of practice time.

Portugal’s many surf towns offer something unique, and each has its own personality. One of the most well-known is Cascais, which is an easy train ride from Lisbon and can be reached within 30 minutes. Another picturesque area, Sesimbra, is also within driving distance of the city. Keep in mind the Atlantic Ocean is very chilly, so expect to wear a wetsuit even on sunny days during the summer months.

Bali, Indonesia

Many surfers consider Bali to be the ultimate surf destination, as this tropical locale offers exceptional surfing year-round at 60 different left-hand and right-hand breaks. Overall, the calm, relaxed ambiance attracts surfers and beach lovers from across the world. For travelers, there’s an added bonus: Prices are budget-friendly, there are plenty of affordable guesthouses and local cafes, and you’ll meet many other passionate surfers of all ages from around the world. Bali’s lovely, aquamarine surf breaks are exceptionally beautiful, yet varied, so surfers of all levels will most certainly find their own favorite places here.

Costa Rica

Surfers know why Costa Rica is often referred to as the “happiest place on earth.” This country boasts some of the best surfing on earth with waves crashing against golden sand and isolated beaches right next to lush rainforests. On the Caribbean coast, one of the more famous surf breaks is Puerto Viejo in the southeast, with its massive waves that are best during the dry season (November to April). One of the country’s best-known spots is Witch’s Rock, a favorite for beginners and intermediates that’s best from December to March. With a variety of surf camps (including many women-only surf camps), it’s easy to find a surfing beach that’s ideal for your lifestyle and level – and there are plenty of opportunities to advance your skills.

Morocco

In northern Africa, Morocco is an exceptional year-round surfing destination, as it offers varied waves along its unique coastline that faces both northwest and southwest. October to April attracts surfers of all levels from around the world, but for those who are seeking larger, more powerful swells, it is best to go in the mid-winter season. Visitors adore the laid-back surf vibe in the coastal towns and keep returning for the vast selection of tranquil surfing beaches.

A few of the well-known challenging breaks are La Source, Safi, and Anchor Point. For beginners and intermediate surfers, Essaouira and Hash point are two of the more mellow spots. There are a number of shops along the beach that rent boards. The water is cold here so a wetsuit is a must, even in warm weather.

Bondi Beach, Australia

One of the most legendary surfing beaches in Australia is the world-famous Bondi beach. Situated about 4 miles from the center of Sydney, it’s a major tourist attraction and often the first stop when visitors arrive in the city. It’s also a favorite for locals, too. With jaw-dropping views, crystal-blue waves (with lefts and rights), and a consistent swell year-round, it’s no surprise that Bondi draws passionate surfers who wish to catch waves at this iconic warm-water destination throughout the year. In addition to the surf and sand, Bondi is also famous for the lively culture, as it’s home to bars, restaurants, boutique shops, food markets, and lovely hiking trails.

The life of a professional surfer may sound like a dream career to many – and female pros including Leila Hurst, Karina Rozunko, Hanna Scott, Caroline Marks and Carissa Moore are multi-award-winning, vibrant and ambitious.

But their lifestyles encompass much more than catching waves; they also adore their hometowns, and are involved in charitable foundations to support their communities and empower women.

Not surprisingly, they are also well-traveled and love to experience the diverse food offerings at beach cafes, in both local spots and exotic destinations. And they shared some of their favorites with us.

Karina Rozunko

Mexican food in San Clemente and a surf bar in Bali

Growing up in Southern California, Karina Rozunko is a longboarder who surfs for the Vans team and also has her own clothing line with the company. She’s currently working on a surfing video project in Australia and Bali.

Her go-to place for an after-surf snack is Cafe Del Sol, located in the charming beach town of San Clemente, California. It’s close to a world-class surf break called Trestles.

She says, “It’s the best Mexican food in San Clemente. The people working there are so funny and charismatic…It’s been my favorite since I was a kid.” She pointed out that she adores the potato tacos, enchiladas and the breakfast burritos.

When she’s in Bali, Indonesia, Rozunko heads to the Surfers Bar in Canggu. She’s a fan of their tempe chips, cap cay (a regional stir-fry), and the fresh juices.

“They serve great, authentic Balinese food for a fraction of the price compared to home. The owner also surfs and makes you feel like family. And you can leave your surfboards down at the beach, which is very convenient.” She added that she loves sipping cocktails and dancing with the staff. “And they make the best papaya daiquiris by request.”

Leila Hurst

Breakfast pastries and pizza in Hawaii and California

Leila Hurst grew up in Hawaii and keeps busy with several projects, including hosting events with her non-profit organization, Shine with Her. It supports and encourages girls by promoting a healthy lifestyle. As an active freesurfer, she plans to travel to Indonesia this year to film surfing adventures with her fellow female Vans team riders.

Her favorite café is the Kilauea Bakery and Pau Hana Pizza in her hometown of Kilauea on the north shore of Kauai. “Our town is small. We don’t have much, not even one stop light,” she says. Growing up, she spent a lot of time at this café and became a loyal customer over the years.

She says, “I love this bakery. It defines my hometown and I love every bit of it. I would stop there before and after school – almost every day for twelve years. I would get breakfast, then eat it at the bus stop, then get lunch and eat it at school – and then sometimes go back after school for a slice of pizza.”

Hurst added, “I’ve always lived on their pesto bagels toasted with cream cheese and their blended vanilla chai. They have an amazing sticky bun – and to be honest I don’t even know what it’s made from, but it has macadamia nuts on the top. So good!”

Her family hails from Mendocino, in Northern California, so she dines at the Goodlife Cafe and Bakery when she’s in town. It’s a cute, cozy eatery with a laid-back ambiance and a robust menu of scratch-made delights for breakfast and lunch. She says, “My favorite items on the menu are the gluten-free pastries and delicious coffee drinks.”

Hanna Scott

Seafood in Tofino and vegan bites in Raglan

Canadian surfer Hanna Scott resides in the iconic surf town of Tofino, British Columbia and is a member of the Vans team. Her favorite hometown beachfront restaurants are in Cox Bay and include Wildside Grill, as well as the Great Room at Long Beach Lodge.

Wildside is a hip, farm-to-table spot where she loves to go for their fresh seafood after surfing. She says, “It’s great for sunset – and in summer, the sun sets at around 10 PM. When my family comes to visit, we ride our bikes over there and hang at the fire pit and order fish and chips.”

She is also a frequent customer at the Great Room at Long Beach Lodge because it offers panoramic views overlooking the ocean. Even when it’s stormy, she may be found sipping coffee or having a snack near the massive fireplace while watching the tides.

She says, “The staff is super nice, and they don’t mind locals lounging around in their fancy hotel restaurant while waiting to go surf. It’s pretty fun.”

When she’s on the other side of the world in New Zealand, Scott heads to Solscape in Raglan, near where she lived years ago. Solscape is an innovative eco-lodge with a vegan restaurant that serves up plant-based specialties.

She explained that this cafe is located in between points, so it’s a convenient spot for her to grab a bite to eat and then catch more waves.

She says, “It’s not right on the beach, it’s up on a hill, but you can see the ocean. They serve amazing food that’s grown right in their garden.” She added that she always sees lots of monarch butterflies there and she finds it to be a relaxing and restful oasis.

Caroline Marks

Healthy bowls and fro-yo in San Clemente and Thai food in Australia

The youngest female to compete in a World Surf League event, Caroline Marks is currently training for upcoming competitions and the Summer Olympics. She’s a member of the Red Bull team and her favorite hometown café is Active Culture in San Clemente, California, where she’s been known to hang out and enjoy a post-surf meal since moving there as a teen.

Marks says, “Everyone is super cool in there, and it’s really healthy, quick and easy, which is convenient after I surf all morning. I love the ‘wholesome bowl’ – it’s very filling, but my favorite is the frozen yogurt.” She added, “I have a lot of memories going there with my friends and my brothers – it’s a cool vibe. It’s mellow, the food is good – not much more you can ask for.”

When Marks is traveling in Australia, she adores Torquay Thai in Bells Beach, which is close to Melbourne. “It’s amazing – the best Thai food I’ve ever had. Pretty sure last time I was there on tour, I went there every single night. I always get the curry. I can’t wait for the event again this year to go back.”

Carissa Moore

Vegan bowls in Honolulu and milkshakes in South Africa

As a fourth-time world champion, Carissa Moore recently became the first Hawaiian to qualify for the Olympic surf team. She’s sponsored by Red Bull and has established the Moore Aloha Charitable Foundation to empower young women through surfing.

At home in Oahu, Hawaii, her favorite spot is Banán on University Avenue in Honolulu (one of four locations). She admits that she’s a bit biased because her husband, Luke Untermann is the owner of this café where they create vegan banana-based specialties.

She says, “It’s healthy, it fills you, and you feel good after. The ambiance of the location is extra special because my husband did the build-out. There are a lot of plants and beautiful artwork, and I just love the color scheme – it’s a happy vibe in there.”

Naturally, her favorite menu item is the “Riss Moore bowl.” She explained, “It’s obviously all of my favorite flavors and things put into a bowl – banana acai swirl with pineapple, papaya, strawberries, puffed quinoa and honey. I like to add an extra scoop of macadamia nut butter.”

When Moore travels to South Africa, where she has surfed in the J-Bay competition, she heads to InFood Bakery in Jeffreys Bay, and is especially fond of their milkshakes and artisan pastries.

“It’s healthy, everything is organic and a lot of love is put into every dish. The people there are really friendly and the atmosphere is great. The morning after I won Jeffreys Bay in 2019, Luke and I had a really nice breakfast there.”

Sharing a love of the ocean inspires surfers worldwide to paddle out and catch waves every day. But not everyone first jumped on a board as a child or teen. For women who have learned to surf after age 40, the beach has become a place of community, solitude and triumph. Across the United States, women are finding that learning to surf as adults has enriched their lives on many levels, leading to travel, new friendships, and healthier lifestyles. And this means Gen X women will be surfing well into their 60s, 70s and beyond.

In Malibu, California, Ellen Johnson is a 59-year-old real estate agent who started surfing at 50, after her divorce and while her children were in college. At that point in her life, she was fortunate to have a flexible schedule, a lot of patience and plenty of time to practice in the water.
