Ocean Grove, New Jersey, is a charming beach town situated between Asbury Park and Bradley Beach in the Northern part of the Jersey shore. Founded in 1869 as a Methodist camp meeting destination, it has retained much of its historic character, with its Victorian homes, their Great Auditorium, and a serene beach culture that seems worlds away from busy Asbury Park. Most visitors would say their famous sprawling “tent” community near the ocean is one of the most unique and fascinating elements of this quiet beach town.

I live in New Jersey, and I’ve visited Ocean Grove many times over the years. It offers plenty of things to do for visitors who want more than just sun and sand. If you’re planning a trip, here’s a guide to making the most of your time in Ocean Grove: what to see, where to eat, when to go, and how to enjoy it respectfully. How to visit Ocean Grove, New Jersey

Ocean Grove was established in the late 1800s as part of a religious Methodist camp meeting movement. It’s considered one of the most unique places on the Jersey shore and is an under-the-radar destination. According to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, this picturesque town was founded as a place of worship, rest, and community away from city life. Originally, the group created just about everything in town: the roads, businesses, and more. They built the town’s tents, and eventually constructed permanent cottages. Due to this beach town’s unusual history, there are many interesting traditions in Ocean Grove. In fact, several of the town’s regulations (historical “blue laws”) and its culture reflect its religious roots. (For example, for many years, the beach was closed Sunday mornings until noon for worship services.)

That’s me in the photo above in front of the Springsteen Center before it opened to the public in June 2026. Fun fact: If you’re a Springsteen fan, you’ll want to know that Bruce and the E Street band rehearsed in Ocean Grove in early 2026 in preparation for their “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour, where they performed at many cities across the USA from late March until June 2026. These rehearsals drew fans from across the area, who stood outside and could clearly hear all the songs the band played.

The newly-opened Springsteen Center for American Music opened in early June 2026 and it’s SO worth a visit for music fans. I was fortunate to get a preview of this center a week before it opened and it’s really something special! Music fans will love to explore this exceptional museum and it’s only about a 15-minute drive from Ocean Grove!

Major fans of Bruce Springsteen will absolutely love the Rock and Roll Tour at the Jersey Shore. I took the tour last summer and it features several hours of in-depth knowledge about The Boss and visits to many places that played a pivotal role in his childhood and early-career. Ocean Grove’s Architecture, Character & History

Recognized worldwide for its Victorian and early-20^th century architecture, Ocean Grove is a designated State and Historic District. With the fantastic Great Auditorium in the center of town, Ocean Grove is home to many cottages and devotional buildings, so visitors often feel like they take a step back in time when they stroll around the streets (especially around the fascinating tented area where so many families spend the summer in their unique tiny tent dwellings).

If you choose to visit the tented area, please be respectful, as these are homes to many people during the summer and there is a strict noise ordinance.

Best Things To Do in Ocean Grove

Here are the top attractions and experiences you shouldn’t miss when you visit.

Relax on Ocean Grove Beach

The beach is a big part of Ocean’s Grove’s character. It’s quieter and much more relaxed than some of the major Jersey Shore hotspots. It’s great for hanging out, swimming, reading, or early morning / late afternoon walks.

Historically, the beach was closed on Sunday mornings until noon, a tradition rooted in the town’s religious heritage. As of 2024, there have been legal disputes that have temporarily opened beach access on Sunday mornings while things are worked out.

In addition, for the past 30 years, the iron gates between Ocean Grove and Asbury Park (on two bridges along Wesley Lake) have been locked in the evening from midnight to 5 am. The purpose of this was apparently to keep out crime. However, most recently, in September 2025, the Neptune township council voted to unlock the gates.

Built in 1894, the Great Auditorium seats over 6,000 people, has stunning wooden architecture and known for its incredible acoustics.

The Great Auditorium hosts concerts, classical music performances, worship services, and special events, especially in the summer. If you plan, you might catch something you love. Visit the Centennial Cottage via the Historical Society of Ocean Grove. It’s a living-history museum that gives insight into life in the 19th-century camp meeting and resort culture. Tours are typically in summer and often free. (Visit New Jersey)

Ocean Grove’s new pier & boardwalk views

The Ocean Grove pier was rebuilt recently and is simply stunning. It offers great views up and down the coast, fresh air, and it’s an ideal place for photo opportunities.

While Ocean Grove’s boardwalk is more low-key than neighboring Asbury Park’s, that’s part of the appeal if you want peace, oceanside walks, or watching waves.

Are there amusement parks in Ocean Grove, New Jersey? No, there are no amusement parks or carnival games here. For lively bars and restaurants, you’ll need to go Asbury Park, and for amusement parks, you must head to Point Pleasant, Seaside Park, Ocean City, Atlantic City, or even further south to Wildwood, New Jersey. All of these Jersey shore towns have expansive arcades and amusement parks with Ferris wheels and rides for kids of all ages.

Eat & Drink: Local Flavors in Ocean Grove, NJ

A few popular places to eat in Ocean Grove are: Seagrass restaurant (upscale farm-to-table cuisine); The Starving Artist (for breakfast and lunch); and Day’s Ice Cream (an old-school place that’s been open for decades). There are plenty of restaurants in the area, and of course, a number of others in Asbury Park, just a short stroll away.

For coffee lovers, check out Odyssey Coffee on Main Avenue. It’s cozy, good for morning fuel, and offers a relaxing vibe.

Ocean Grove features many Independently-owned shops. Main Avenue is charming. Boutiques, old-school shops, bakeries, coffee spots, art galleries, and various independently-owned stores are all within walking distance of the beach and boardwalk. During summer, Ocean Grove has a lively event calendar: concerts at the Great Auditorium, house tours, garden tours, arts and crafts shows, classical concerts, flea markets.

Tips for Visiting Ocean Grove

Best Time to Visit

• Summer (June-August): for full beach access, events, and warm water. However, this is peak season – so expect crowds, especially on weekends!
• Late spring / early fall: This season is often more pleasant if you like fewer crowds and mild weather. It will definitely be quieter, as the kids are back in school and families are not on vacation. Some events may still be running.
• Off-season: many shops/restaurants may be closed or have limited hours; some things may be seasonal.

Beach Access & Rules

• Be aware of Sunday morning access rules: historically, the beach was closed for worship services until noon on Sundays due to the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association’s rules. That has been challenged legally, and more flexible access has been allowed more recently.
• Respect local customs. Ocean Grove is more tranquil and traditional than its neighbors: late-night parties, loud music, etc., are MUCH less emphasized here.

Getting Around and Parking

Ocean Grove is walkable. Once you’re on or near Main Avenue or the boardwalk, you can cover a lot on foot.

Parking can be tricky in summer. Look for municipal lots, street parking, and check local signs. Arriving early in the day helps. Parking in the adjacent town of Asbury Park can be especially frustrating this year, as several construction projects are underway where parking lots used to be.

Where to Stay in Ocean Grove

There are charming bed & breakfasts and small inns, many in restored Victorian cottages. Staying close to Main Avenue or the beach means a quick walk to the sand. I took the photo above of the Albatross Inn in Ocean Grove. Here’s a few recommended hotels and Inns:

You can stop by Asbury Park for nightlife, mini-golf, more extensive shopping, or explore nearby towns (Bradley Beach, Long Branch, Avon-by-the-Sea, and others).

Things to Know Before You Go (FAQs) for Ocean Grove

• Is Ocean Grove beach free? No, you must purchase beach badges to visit the beach in Ocean Grove. Here’s the link to information about beach badges in Ocean Grove: https://www.oceangrove.org/badges. They must be purchased at the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association Beach Office located on the beach.
• Are there lifeguards? Yes, during the beach season, only lifeguards are posted during designated hours. Always check signage for specific times. (Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association). It is highly recommended to not enter the water if lifeguards are not on duty. It is dangerous!!
• Is Ocean Grove Accessible? Many of the public spaces, boardwalk, and main areas are fairly accessible, but some older walkways may be more challenging. It’s good to check specific access needs and check the hotel or inn where you wish to stay ahead of time.
• Restaurants / Food options: Many restaurants are locally owned. For varied cuisine, you sometimes need to go to Asbury Park or Bradley Beach. But for casual, good food, Ocean Grove has several casual spots.
• Weather / tides: Summers can be hot and humid; Atlantic coastal weather is very  changeable. Bring sunscreen, layers, and check the tide schedule if you like tidepools or beach walks at low tide.

Summary: Why Ocean Grove vs. Other Shore Towns: Is Ocean Grove worth the drive?

Quieter, calmer vibe: If you want the beach but also peace. Not as commercial, fewer big boardwalk arcades or crab houses.

Rich history and architecture: You can feel the past in the built environment. For lovers of Victorian homes, religious history, planned resort towns, OG is a gem.

Community & tradition: Many local events, community arts, music, worship, and cultural gatherings are genuine, not purely tourist oriented.

Proximity: Close enough to bigger shore-town amenities (restaurants, nightlife) but far enough removed to be refreshing.

What’s nearby? You can walk to Asbury Park along the boardwalk and the street. It’s about a 20-minute walk.

Visit Ocean Grove this summer

Ocean Grove is one of those places you go to slow down and reconnect, but you’re still close to all the fun.

If you come to Ocean Grove expecting parties or non-stop entertainment, look elsewhere. But keep in mind you’re steps away from Asbury Park and all the fun music clubs and adult entertainment. Ocean Grove is for enjoying the ocean, strolling their small boardwalk, dining, and appreciating the Victorian porches.

Final tip: Plan ahead for events, respect the traditions, and embrace that mix of spirituality, seaside peace, and architectural beauty.

In September 2025, I attended two historic Bruce Springsteen events celebrating the 50^th anniversary of the album, Born to Run, held at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey. Hosted and produced by the Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music, the weekend provided rare film footage, an entire day of insightful panel discussions, and an exciting surprise live performance by Bruce Springsteen that reunited members of the E Street Band for two incredible songs.

I was fortunate to have attended the Friday night event “An Evening with Thom Zimney” as well as the Born to Run symposium, which officially kicked off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 6.

As a Springsteen fan and writer, I was thrilled to experience every moment and grateful for the privilege of being in the audience, as it was understandably a “hot ticket” among Springsteen fans. It was surreal to sit in the Pollak Theatre listening to Bruce, along with numerous musicians and industry professionals who helped create one of rock’s most enduring albums, speak candidly about the making of Born to Run, while sharing fun stories and anecdotes.

Here’s my overview of this once-in-a-lifetime event, including Friday night’s “Evening with Thom Zimney” that featured a 45-minute never-before-seen film made from black and white footage that captured the Born to Run recording sessions from 1975.

As someone who has personally attended a multitude of events over the years, I was impressed with the entire production, and it was clear that a lot of time and work went into the preparation and planning. There were numerous panelists and logistics to manage, and this event was definitely punctual and organized. Kudos to the Archives team – they were truly instrumental in hosting one of the most remarkable celebrations in rock history, honoring the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run.

And just to clarify, this article is not a detailed description or comprehensive review of everything that happened at the Friday night and Saturday events. I wanted to write this as an “overview” of the symposium, especially since so many friends and colleagues have asked me about it.

My View From the Audience

For both Friday night’s event and Saturday’s full-day symposium at Monmouth University, my seat was in the first level toward the rear. The Pollak Theatre accommodates 700 attendees, so every seat has great sight lines and a clear view of the stage.  I highly recommend this venue, as I could see everything that was happening on the stage — the moderators, the panelists, the screens (and of course Bruce when he joined in the afternoon).

Throughout the day, a number of musicians, producers, historians, and insiders discussed the making and legacy of Born to Run. After lunch, phones were locked away — meaning the afternoon’s panels and Bruce’s appearances were experienced live, with no audience photography. All photos you see here were taken by me or they are official photos by the Springsteen Archives.

Overall, the event had a communal feel as the entire audience on Friday and Saturday was filled with diehard Springsteen fans. I chatted with Stan Goldstein (who recently gave me a memorable Rock and Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore) and ran into several of my other friends. On Saturday, the schedule was packed and the many panels flowed one after another with no breaks except for lunch, which kept the day moving at an exciting pace.

Highlight: A Historic Performance by Bruce Springsteen on September 6, 2025

On Saturday, September 6, 2025, the absolute highlight of the day was late afternoon when Bruce Springsteen surprised fans by reuniting the E Street Band for a performance inside Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre, a 700-seat venue resurrected for one unforgettable night.

Introduced by Bob Santelli, executive director of the Springsteen Archives, who declared: “I always wanted to say this — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band!” Springsteen and the band launched into high-energy renditions of the beloved songs “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.”

The lineup was legendary: Steven Van Zandt, Garry Tallent, Roy Bittan, Max Weinberg, David Sancious, Ernest “Boom” Carter, and Ed Manion on saxophone. The performance was especially poignant: Boom Carter had not performed with the E Street Band in over 50 years, making this reunion truly historic.

Bruce Springsteen’s Panels (three memorable conversations!)

For the attendees, Bruce Springsteen’s participation in several panels was a true highlight and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Bruce brought his own distinct energy, which added a level of fun and frivolity to the panels. At one point when asked about the lyrics to Backstreets, he requested the teleprompter to show him “all” the lyrics so he could read them. (He joked that he is almost 76 years old and couldn’t remember everything).

Writing “Born to Run,” the Song

This compelling panel focused on how Bruce created the song, Born to Run and the participants included Bruce Springsteen, Mike Appel and Jon Landau discussing the song with moderator Bob Santelli.

Bruce spoke about his influences (Roy Orbison, Phil Spector, Dylan, Beach Boys, Chuck Berry and others), finding the “Born to Run” title while in Long Branch (from a slogan he “may” have seen on a car), choosing the name “Wendy” from a Peter Pan poster he had hanging in his rental home, and his experience investing months into writing and re-writing the lyrics. He pointed out that he always writes notes and lyrics in a basic spiral-bound notebook – and continues to use the same type of book today.

Writing “Born to Run,” the Album

For this panel, participants Bruce Springsteen and his long-time manager Jon Landau chatted with moderator author Peter Ames Carlin as Bruce shared his memories of rehearsals, Landau’s variety of edit suggestions (especially on the song,  Backstreets), and described the song Meeting Across the River as a perfect intro to Jungleland and stated that “as a prologue, it doesn’t get better than that…” Bruce chatted about several of the songs’ lyrics as well. He and Landau told the audience they both understood they were making “the greatest rock and roll album of all time,” and at that point the crowd burst into frenzied applause.

At one point, Bruce revealed that he knew his career was on the line and stated, “If the record didn’t click, I’m back in Asbury Park, except way in debt and worse off than when I started.”

Additionally, Bruce made it point to menion Carlin’s latest book, “Tonight in Jungleland,” that was recently published (2025). He stated, “The book means a lot to me.”

Roundtable: The Making of Born to Run

The final panel’s roundtable featured Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Mike Appel, Jimmy Iovine, Roy Bittan, Garry Tallent, Steve Van Zandt, and Max Weinberg.

During the discussion, Van Zandt explained how he convinced Bruce to change the famous guitar riff in the song from a minor note to a major note; and Iovine joked about faking his way through mixing (“I had never mixed an album before,” he said); and Bruce declared: “It was all or nothing for me. My life was on it.”

Other panelists reflected on studio tension throughout the album’s recording and several had clear memories of Bruce asking the band to do many takes of the same song, over and over. (Saying, “no!” and “again” many times during the project.) They discussed collaborative breakthroughs, and the relentless pursuit of perfection that was constantly surrounding the making of this legendary record.

Friday, September 5: “An Evening with Thom Zimny” and Archival Film

The weekend began Friday evening, September 5, 2025, with “An Evening with Thom Zimny: The Making of Born to Run.” All of our cell phones were locked away so there are no casual audience photos — but everything was captured by the Archives.

Bob Santelli welcomed attendees and introduced Thom Zimny, who then gave a brief overview of his archival film, “Jungleland 1975.” He noted: “I edited this to take you back to 1975.” The footage opens at 914 Sound Recording Studios in Blauvelt, New York, and includes rare behind-the-scenes moments that occurred during one day of recording the song, Jungleland: Jon Landau speaking, a young Jimmy Iovine in the background, and repeated studio takes showing a twenty-five-year-old Bruce urging perfection throughout the recording.

The film immediately showed Bruce’s intensity while making the album and show’s Bruce calling out to violinist Suki Lahav, “This is going to be the take — we need no mistakes,” and later urging a re-take for missed notes. He also complains about an out-of-tune piano and jests at bandmates missing notes (Tallent gets a mention). Moments of levity appear too, with Bruce and crew chatting about movies, the group on a dinner break in a diner, and joking around during the recording.

Following the film, music writer Erik Flanagan hosted a talk with the E Street Band’s drummer Max Weinberg and Zimny. Max recalled anxious early nights, shared a story of being worried he’d be fired, and recalled that engineer Louis Lahav once predicted Bruce would be the biggest rock star in the world. Zimny closed with a high-energy film mashup of “Born to Run” footage from 1975 to today the audience gave it a standing ovation to cap off a powerful evening.

Saturday, September 6: Symposium Panels and Conversations

Morning Panels

The event’s early panels included 1974 – The E Street Band featuringparticipants Garry Tallent, David Sancious and Boom Carter, along with moderator Tom Cunningham (107.1 The Boss), discussing the pre-Born to Run era. Highlights included Sancious’s role in recommending Boom, who played 83 shows with Bruce. The group talked about Bruce’s evolving lyrics for Born to Run (which were rewritten many times). Gary Tallent pointed out that he liked the song Born to Run “right away” the first time he heard it.

During the At the Crossroads: Bruce and Columbia Records panel, Mike Appel and Columbia / record label members chatted about behind-the-scenes industry drama, music label pushback, Appel’s unorthodox promotional tactics, and other music-industry intel told by the key players involved with Bruce’s album.

During this fascinating panel, Pam Springsteen interviewed photographer Eric Meola, who shot the iconic Born to Run album cover. She asked insightful photography-related questions, and Eric shared stories of his early days with Bruce, how he was selected for this legendary photo shoot with stories about the day he spent photographing Bruce and Clarence. Meola described the props Bruce brought to the shoot (sneakers, Elvis button, boom box radio) and how he captured the pair’s constant movement rather than planning static poses.

Note: Fans can see some of Meola’s Born to Run photography on display at Monmouth University until December 2025.

After our lunch break, our phones were locked again, so the only photos from the afternoon session are from the official Archives / Eileen Chapman, the executive director of the Springsteen Archives. The Archives also filmed the entire day, so the footage may become available in the future.

An afternoon panel at the symposium included The Historical Significance of Born to Run, where moderator Melissa Ziobro, the Archives’ director of curatorial affairs, lead the conversation among historians and journalists about the cultural climate in 1975. Panelists discussed how the Born to Run album was created in post-Vietnam war America and explores themes of sadness, escape, and restlessness — yet there’s always a sense of hope and redemption.  

The Behind the Scenes of the Tour; and Down the Jersey Shore panels featured band members, touring crew, and insiders who discussed some stories about “real life” on the road. Photographer Barbara Pyle added some unexpected color and character to this portion of the event, as she pointed out that she was the only woman on the tour and it wasn’t always easy for her, as some band members didn’t enjoy being photographed (except Clarence Clemons, she remarked, who was always happy to pose for photos).

Additionally, in the Jersey Shore panel, Steve Van Zandt, Garry Tallent, Ed Manion, and Bob Santelli chatted about the shore bars and clubs, the tight-knit music scene in the Asbury Park area, and how those early gigs fueled the energy behind the record.

Themes and Observations

• Moderators: Only two panels had female moderators: the Historical Significance panel (Melissa Ziobro) and the Photography panel (Pam Springsteen). I found this to be a refreshing change of pace and worth noting in an otherwise male-dominated lineup. These women did an excellent job and added some compelling and energetic insights to the event!
• Risk, Ambition and Legacy: The album’s success stemmed from bold choices, detailed collaboration, and exceptional creativity.
• Place and Identity: The Jersey Shore as more than backdrop it was a major part of the Born to Run story with distinctive sound, identity, and community.
• Technical Storytelling: Choices in mixing, arrangement, overdubs, and sequencing were as narratively significant as the album’s famous lyrics.
• Preservation and Access: Thankfully, with the Springsteen Archives filming all panels, these stories will live on for future generations.

When leaving the Pollak Theatre on Saturday after the full day of non-stop events, the audience was truly buzzing. It was a bit surreal to be walking out of the theater while Bruce, the band, and participants were still on the stage being photographed. As we all exited (into a soaking thunderstorm), I (along with hundreds of diehard fans, I’m certain) couldn’t stop humming Born to Run. The day’s panels had peeled back layers and revealed some fascinating insights behind the making of the Born to Run album, while the surprise E Street Band performance added a powerful exclamation point to the event, solidifying those stories with a great sound and presence. It was an unforgettable memory and an incredible moment for me, and I’m sure all the other Springsteen fans in attendance would agree.

This Born to Run 50th Anniversary Symposium was more than a celebration, proving that 50 years later, Bruce Springsteen’s music still carries the weight, risk, and urgency of an incredible musician and lyricist who values his audience and still has many important messages to share with his fans through his legendary music.

I recently had the opportunity to take the fantastic Rock and Roll tour of the Jersey Shore featuring Bruce Springsteen. I had been dreaming of taking the legendary Springsteen Jersey Shore Tour hosted by Stan Goldstein for years. Although I live in New Jersey (and not too far from the shore), this tour has always been on my “to-do” list. So, in August 2025 I finally joined Stan on this unforgettable journey, exploring the places that shaped Bruce’s life, career, and music — from Asbury Park to Freehold, Long Branch, Rumson, and beyond. I wrote this article to provide an overview of the tour’s highlights and offer some things to know before you go!

For decades, Bruce Springsteen’s name has been synonymous with the Jersey Shore music scene. The Rock ‘n’ Roll tour of the Jersey shore featuring Bruce Springsteen was created especially for fans who wish to learn more about the area that influenced Bruce’s music.

As a lifelong Bruce Springsteen fan, I have seen him in concert over 50 times since 1981, mostly in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York, but I’ve also traveled a lot to his shows. A true Springsteen expert and longtime fan, Stan Goldstein has been conducting his Rock & Roll Tours of the Jersey Shore since 1999. He is the co-founder of the tour with Jean Mikle, and together they have been guiding fans through nearly 25 years of Jersey Shore music history. They are also co-authors of the acclaimed book, “Rock and Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore,” which details many of the locations and stories explored during these tours.

Stan has met Springsteen a few times over the years and has given thousands of these tours, bringing music history to life for fans from around the globe. Through his tours, Stan has met many fans from across the world who share their love for Springsteen’s music. Each tour is carefully planned, and winds its way through Monmouth County, NJ. Stan loves sharing in-depth historical context and his own personal anecdotes. He enjoys taking visitors to the many iconic music landmarks connected with Springsteen and the E Street Band.

On my tour, Stan was joined by a colleague, Robyn Sherer, a lovely local resident and devoted Springsteen fan. She helped guide the tour, shared some of her own personal fun Bruce-related stories, and was kind enough to take many photos throughout the day. Asbury Park, NJ: The Heart of the Jersey Shore Music Scene

Our tour began in Asbury Park, the seaside town forever linked to Bruce Springsteen’s rise to fame. Today, Asbury Park is diverse, bustling and filled with so many great things to do. No wonder it has recently won many accolades, including “Best Small town in the USA.” The town’s famous boardwalk, with its arcades, murals, shops, restaurants, and ocean breezes, immediately sets the tone for a Springsteen tour.

During my visit, I strolled along the boardwalk, enjoying the classic Jersey Shore sights, and visited a small outpost of the soon-to-open Springsteen Archives located in a mini-exhibit with some cool merchandise, too (and of course, I purchased a few t-shirts as souvenirs). I also took a fun photo in front of the mural of Bruce Springsteen on stage and had a lovely chat with the enthusiastic volunteers—clearly devoted fans themselves.

Along the Asbury Park boardwalk and near the iconic Convention Hall building is the famous Madam Marie’s psychic shop, immortalized in the song “4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)”, where fans love to get their fortunes told (or at least snap a few photos). There are plenty of restaurants and bars along the boardwalk (some with outdoor patios and rooftop dining where you can enjoy beautiful beach views), perfect for enjoying the vibrant seaside atmosphere and soaking in the historic, musical vibe of Asbury Park.

Just steps away from the boardwalk sits the world-famous Stone Pony, one of the most famous rock clubs in America, where Bruce played countless shows and helped launch the careers of many other musicians. We also passed the colorful Wonder Bar, another venue steeped in rock and roll history and a fan favorite for grabbing a drink and listening to live music. Nearby is the location of the former Upstage, where Bruce played often early in his career. It was an after-hours club where musicians could jam until 5 am. The actual club is situated at the top of three flights of stairs, so Bruce and the bands who performed here had to carry their equipment to the top floor in order to play.

Asbury Park itself has undergone a revival in recent years, blending modern restaurants, shops, and galleries with historic architecture and classic boardwalk charm. From the murals that pay homage to the city’s musical heritage to the oceanfront views, the town itself feels like walking through a living museum of music history.

Asbury Park, New Jersey is a great, easy day trip from Philadelphia and South Jersey, as it’s about and hour and fifteen-minute drive. As a beach-lover, I always enjoy some beach time, and the Asbury Park beach is an ideal spot to spend the day. There are lifeguards and plenty of places to grab a snack. (There are bathrooms, outdoor showers as well). Like the majority of New Jersey beaches, you must purchase a beach tag during the summer season. The beach is not always as empty as it looks in the photo, but the off-season is the time to visit if you’re seeking less-crowded scene.

Freehold, NJ: Where Bruce’s Story Began

The tour rolled from Asbury Park through several towns, including Freehold, about 15 miles inland from the beach where Bruce grew up. We stopped at two of his childhood homes (the one next to the church no longer exists). These houses offer a glimpse into his early life. Another highlight was our visit to his schools and the beautiful St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church — a cornerstone of his upbringing and big part of the town’s history.

Seeing Bruce’s childhood homes was a thrill, but it’s important to note that there are current residents there and their privacy must be respected. Although photos are allowed, be respectful and don’t trespass on these properties.

One especially fun photo opportunity was to re-create the famous photo of Bruce Springsteen leaning against a tall tree in front of his childhood home. This photo first appeared on the lyric sheet inside Sprinsteen’s powerhouse 1984 “Born in the USA” album. Springsteen himself recreated the pose 40 years later. Thanks to Robyn and Stan, I was able to do the same!

Of course, no stop in Freehold would be complete without a bite at the legendary Jersey Freeze, a local institution where Bruce himself has been spotted quite a few times. We enjoyed a casual, yet delicious lunch there, soaking in the nostalgia (and imagining Bruce enjoying an ice cream at the adjacent shop).

Our drive through Rumson was lovely, as we saw additional locations connected to his life. Rumson is rich in history, with beautiful, winding country roads, tree-lined streets, and gorgeous homes. Touring these neighborhoods gives fans a sense of Bruce’s world beyond the stage.

Long Branch, NJ & the “Bruce in Long Branch” Exhibit

Long Branch itself is a historic beach town with a long connection to music and entertainment. From the Atlantic Ocean boardwalk to the charming downtown area, it’s easy to see why this place influenced the Boss during his early years.

In Long Branch, we had an unexpected stop: Stan brought us to visit the Long Branch Arts and Culture Center featuring the newly-opened “Bruce in Long Branch” exhibit, created by the Springsteen Archives. The museum-like space showcases memorabilia, photos, and artifacts highlighting Bruce’s deep connection to the area. Admiring the exhibit was like flipping through a living scrapbook of Bruce’s Jersey Shore years, offering insight into his creative journey and how the Shore continues to inspire fans around the world.

The exhibit is free, light-filled and situated in one large room. It includes an array of interesting exhibits and mementos — even two of Bruce’s surfboards. (Since I’m a fan of surfing, this was extra fun for me to get an up-close look at his boards — a shortboard AND a longboard — see photo). NOTE: This exhibit is open Monday to Friday and scheduled to run for a few months. Visit the Springsteen Archives website for updates and details.

The “Born to Run House” in Long Branch, NJ: Celebrating 50 Years of Springsteen’s Born to Run album

One of the most exciting stops on the tour was the modest Born to Run House, the small light blue bungalow in Long Branch where Bruce wrote the songs on his breakthrough album, Born to Run. This year (2025) marks the 50th anniversary of that album’s release. Bruce fans (and most music fans) know the Born to Run album was a major milestone not only in Bruce’s career, but in rock history. Standing outside this cozy beach cottage, where I posed for a photo, was nothing short of magical. Inside those unassuming walls, Bruce crafted songs that would change his life and touch millions of fans around the world.

Fans sometimes are invited by the owners of the house to stand on the porch and even touch the screen door, but it is a private residence, so that is not a guarantee.

Belmar: E Street Shuffle and 10th Avenue Freeze-Out

One especially cool photo opportunity is the famous corner of E Street and 10th Avenue in Belmar, New Jersey. Local Springsteen fans know this spot well, and there’s a great statue of a giant-sized Fender Telecaster guitar (with strings!!) just a few steps away from the corner signpost. This is a frequent stop for Bruce fans of all ages, so don’t be surprised if you find other fans taking photos here.

The Transparent Gallery for rock fans

The tour often stops at Danny Clinch’s Transparent Gallery, which is located a few blocks from the beach in Asbury Park. Danny Clinch, an award-winning rock photographer and musician, has photographed Bruce and the band many times over the decades. His gallery is filled with rock and roll treasures for music fans, and you’ll find fantastic photos of the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Bon Jovi, and many other greats. His gallery often hosts live musicians throughout the year. Definitely worth a stop!

Why this Springsteen tour is not to be missed!

I found this tour to be so much fun, extremely interesting, and very informative. As someone who has followed Bruce’s career for decades, seeing his childhood homes, standing in front of St. Rose of Lima Church, enjoying a stop at Jersey Freeze (highly recommend the sandwiches and salads), and visiting the Born to Run House was a thrill. Even though we didn’t meet Bruce on this tour, the possibility adds excitement. Experiencing these places in person brought a new layer of appreciation for Bruce’s background.

Ventnor City, NJ is located on the southern New Jersey shore, making it conveniently close to both Atlantic City and Margate, NJ. In fact, Atlantic City, Ventnor, Margate and Longport are all on the same island and you can easily drive (or sometimes) ride a bike to and from all these towns.

The distance between Ventnor City and Atlantic City is just a 3-mile drive or a leisurely bike ride along the scenic beachfront.

Ventnor City is also in close proximity to Margate, with a mere 2-mile distance separating the two towns. This allows visitors to easily explore the vibrant attractions, casinos, and entertainment of Atlantic City, while also enjoying the charming atmosphere and beautiful beaches of Margate during their stay in Ventnor City.

NOTE: Ubers, Lyft and taxis are plentiful in this area of the Jersey shore, although keep in mind it’s much busier in the summer months and these towns are very quiet in the off-season.

The Ventnor Fishing Pier in Ventnor, NJ

Where is the Ventnor Pier in Ventnor, NJ? The Ventnor fishing pier is located at Cambridge Avenue in Ventnor, NJ. It’s a beautiful, recently-renovated pier that stretches out into the ocean and offers plenty of benches for seating and there are restrooms here as well.

The Ventnor fishing pier can be accessed via the Ventnor boardwalk at Cambridge Avenue. There is very little shade on the pier, and no other facilities other than the restrooms. This means to bring your own food, water, hat, sunblock and anything else you may need.

Does Ventnor have a boardwalk?

The Ventnor boardwalk is a lovely place to stroll. It runs along the town’s 1.7 mile coastline (2.7 km). This boardwalk is connected to the larger, more famous Atlantic City boardwalk to the north.

You will NOT find restaurants, cafes on shops on the Ventnor boardwalk. You WILL find some benches for seating, a few pavilions for shade, and you’ll have a view of the beach, dunes, single homes and some apartment buildings.

If you walk north, this boardwalk connects to the Atlantic City boardwalk, which has a lot going on — and features many casinos, shops, places to grab a casual snack, beach bars, and public restrooms. The Atlantic City boardwalk is completely different from Ventnor’s boardwalk.

Bathrooms and facilities in Ventnor, NJ

Ventnor has public restrooms in several locations, but not every beach has restrooms. Ventnor’s public restrooms are open during the summer season from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the following locations:

• Newport Avenue (adjacent to the Community Building)

• Suffolk Avenue (by the Tennis/Pickleball Courts) 

• The Fishing Pier on Cambridge Avenue (Note – these are very small bathrooms – only two stalls in the women’s room). They are clean but there are no showers and you’ll see signs prohibiting from changing clothing). It does not offer changing rooms or showers.

Surfing in Ventnor City Beach, NJ

You can surf in Ventnor City, NJ! The New Jersey coast is on the Atlantic Ocean, so there’s a great surf culture here — and surfing year-round in New Jersey!

In Ventnor, the surfing beach is located next to the Cambridge Avenue fishing pier. There are no lifeguards here, but the area is generally supervised by the neighboring beach’s guards. Surf at your own risk.

In New Jersey, surfers ride the waves all year long, even in winter. However, the ocean water is warmest in July and August and most likely you won’t need a wetsuit. There are several surf shops that offer lessons during the summer months.

ADA Accessible Beaches in Ventnor, NJ

Ventnor City offers accessible (ADA) ramp access to the beach at certain locations. Beach mats make accessing the beach so much easier for those who need extra assistance. Ventnor has several beach entrances with beach mats. Locations are: Suffolk, Dorset, Newport, Derby, Oxford and Somerset Avenue beaches. 

Surf chairs are available through Beach Patrol from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day. (Call 609-823-7948 for reservations).

Accessible Parking is available at kiosk and metered stations located at Suffolk and Somerset avenues and Newport and New Haven Avenues.

Accessible Restrooms are located at: Suffolk Avenue tennis courts, Cambridge Avenue fishing pier, Newport Avenue playground, and New Haven Avenue library.

Parking in Ventnor Beach, NJ

Parking for the beach in Ventnor is easier during the week. There is only ONE municipal parking lot, so and it’s mostly street parking on residential streets. You can use the “Park Mobile” app for most parking spots. Some streets have meters and kiosks and you may find some others are free.

Generally speaking, it’s best to get to the beach early if you wish to find a parking spot. Ideally, it’s a good idea to avoid weekends in the summer, as parking can be a hassle.

I’m a New Jersey local and I love sharing my tips about the state and interesting places to visit! The Garden State has so many fascinating historical sites to visit. As a resident, I have lived in Northern New Jersey as well as Southern New Jersey. Currently, I live in Cherry Hill now and I’ve discovered so many fantastic places to visit throughout the year.

Below are a few fun ideas you can add to your list when you’re looking for great things to do in New Jersey! And I have personally visited all of these destinations in the past few months!

The best things to do in North Jersey are closer than you think!

New Jersey, known as the Garden State, is a destination with an incredibly diverse history. Situated in the northeastern part of the United States, New Jersey’s coastline is about 130 miles long, bordering New York, Pennsylvania, the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware and the Delaware Bay.

In the early days of this state’s history, New Jersey was one of the 13 original colonies and played a major role in the Revolutionary War. This state was heavily involved in the industrial revolution and was simultaneously known for its sprawling farmlands, especially in the southern part of the state.

Today, New Jersey is a truly unique place to visit, as it’s the most densely populated state in the USA, and the landscape ranges from urban and fast-paced – to rustic, peaceful and relaxing.

The state of New Jersey is diverse and interesting — there are so many things to do in North Jersey! It’s a cool place to visit because there’s so much to choose from!

Do you want to see the most incredible view of the New York City skyline? Go to Weehawken and walk along the famous Kennedy Boulevard East! Do you wish to see the second-largest waterfall in North America? Head to Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ. Are you interested in a Victorian seaside getaway? Drive south to Cape May, at the southernmost tip of the state. Do you want to visit the most stunning views of the Delaware River? Go west — to the Delaware Water Gap where there’s an abundance of great hiking trails with scenic views.

Where is North Jersey?

Where is Northern NJ? Geographically, it’s the northern part of the state, which borders New York. Some areas of Northern NJ are considered the “New York metropolitan area” and it’s bustling — but other areas in north Jersey are home to hills and valleys with dramatic scenery. This area is vastly different from the shoreline, which is a popular vacation destination in the summer — and the pine barrens in the south which are completely different — heavily wooded, sandy, flat marshlands.

There are no definitive borders between north, central and southern NJ. In fact, New Jersey residents often disagree about the exact locations of North, Central and Southern New Jersey, as all these areas are home to a variety of small and large towns with their own vibe and personalities.

Here are the best (and most fun) historic destinations in Northern New Jersey

1. Tour Liberty Hall

This exquisite 50-room historic mansion in the town of Union, New Jersey was originally the home of William Livingston, who served as New Jersey’s first governor and was one of the “founding fathers” who signed the United States Constitution. It’s a fascinating place to visit, as there’s so much history here, including some of New Jersey’s oldest trees.

When visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to tour this grand house and see original artifacts from the Livingston family, as well as learn about life in 18th-century New Jersey. In addition to touring the mansion, you can visit (and tour) the gardens, arboretum and firehouse museum. You can certainly spend a few hours here, especially during the warmer months. 2. Visit Weehawken: the site of the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr

Years ago, I lived in this wonderful Weekhawken neighborhood, so I would walk by this spot every day — for many years! Hamilton Park is situated on the most picturesque cliff overlooking the Hudson River, with the majestic Manhattan skyline beyond. This small green space high above the river is the site of the fatal duel where Alexander Hamilton was shot by Aaron Burr in 1804.

There’s a bronze bust of Hamilton in the center of this area, along with several memorial plaques nearby, including the rock where he supposedly rested his head after being wounded. There are benches and pathways through the park where you can relax and take in all the history that happened here, and a long paved sidewalk where you can stroll north or south while admiring the skyline and the views. You’ll see a lot of activity here — locals exercising, tourists strolling and even bridal parties getting photographed against the Manhattan skyline on weekends! You can walk for quite a while along the paved pathway where you’ll see some mansions, large homes and apartment buildings facing the Manhattan skyline.

What is Weehawken near? This location is close to Hoboken (and several nearby restaurants), so can definitely find a place to eat or grab a coffee after visiting.

3. Explore Morristown National Historical Park

The Morristown National Historical Park in Morristown, New Jersey preserves several sites associated with the Revolutionary War, including the Ford Mansion, where George Washington and his officers stayed during the famously harsh winter of 1779-1780. It’s also home to the Jockey Hollow Encampment, where soldiers lived during that winter.

At Morristown National Historic Park, you can visit the museum, take a guided tour, explore the library, and see reenactments (visit the website for details). Also at this park is Jockey Hollow, which features some great hiking trails, ranging from easy to more difficult.

4. Visit the town of Red Bank, NJ (and JBJ Soul Kitchen)

Red Bank is a cute, historic town is home to many great independently-owned shops, cafes and restaurants — and more! You can easily spend an afternoon here, as there are several blocks filled with things to see and do. (Plus, you are right by the water and a quick drive to the beaches)!

If you want to see a historic hotel in Red Bank, NJ, the Molly Pitcher Hotel is the place to visit. It’s situated on the Navesink River and is the site of many special events throughout the year. Named after the famous woman who played a role in assisting George Washington’s troops in the Revolutionary War, this landmark property is a favorite among locals and visitors. Generally speaking, this hotel’s heyday was in the late 1960s through the 1980s, when many celebrities would stay here — usually when they performed at the nearby Garden State Arts Center, a few miles away.

If you visit the Molly Pitcher, be sure to stay for dinner, as there’s a lovely restaurant here, with waterfront views. Or if you’re up for a quick walk, just take a leisurly stroll to the center of Red Bank for more restaurants serving up an array of cusine. Summertime is the best season to enjoy this property, as there’s a pool (and a pool bar) overlooking the river. The Molly Pitcher is also within walking distance of the center of Red Bank, home to many independently-owned shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The (former) Count Basie Theater is just a few blocks away, so the Molly Pitcher is an ideal place to stay if you’re seeing a show. And don’t miss the famous JBJ Soul Kitchen, a community-centered “pay what you can afford” non-profit restaurant / non-profit that was started by the legendary rocker, Jon Bon Jovi, nearby!

5. Visit Great Falls National Park in Paterson

Did you know that New Jersey has the second-largest waterfall in North America (after Niagara Falls)? It’s true, and you can easily see this beautiful natural sight at the Paterson Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ.

The town of Paterson, NJ was established in 1792 around this gorgeous waterfall, and it was the first planned industrial city in the United States.

It’s fun to experience this amazing waterfall and park, as it’s tucked away in an urban area of northern New Jersey, yet it’s close to everything. There’s a fairly large parking lot, and plenty of places to take in some inspiring views and take some superb photographs. Visitors can walk around the park and cross the river to the other side. This area features some relatively flat walking trails, lovely cherry and dogwood trees that bloom in the springtime.

When we visited, a very helpful park ranger was there to answer questions and offer some intriguing facts about the waterfall. He was also there to offer some safety tips about viewing the waterfall safely. This park is a work in progress and expansion plans are in the works for 2024.

6. Pick flowers at Holland Ridge Farms

Springtime is the ideal season to visit the stunningly colorful tulip fields at Holland Ridge Farms in Cream Ridge, New Jersey. Although this may be considered “central” Jersey, this rural destination is a great road trip from anywhere in the state. This family-friendly farm features spots for selfies amidst the blooms, a small farm museum, and food trucks (on weekends and certain dates) so you can take a break from wandering and have a snack!

It’s hard to resist picking every tulip you see, but that’s okay. You can purchase whatever you pick, and the farm provides buckets to hold your flowers as you wander through the fields.

Advance tickets are (usually) required and to avoid crowds, it’s best if you visit during the week. However, I visited on a weekend in the spring — and we had a fantastic visit and purchased several bouquets of brightly-colored tulips. Find more info at Holland Ridge Farms.

7. Learn about history at Princeton Battlefield State Park

This tranquil park in Princeton, NJ preserves the site of a Revolutionary War battle that took place here in 1777. As you walk through this sprawling leafy destination, visitors can see monuments and markers that commemorate the battle, and learn about the events that led up to it — as well as the impact it had on the war. Princeton Battlefield State Park is a place where you can spend an entire day if the weather if nice, so check out their official website with details about how to visit.

You’re also close to Princeton University, so there’s plenty to see and do nearby!

8. Explore Thomas Edison National Historical Park

The Thomas Edison National Historic park in West Orange is dedicated to the life and work of Thomas Edison, one of America’s most famous inventors. Visitors can tour the laboratory where he developed many of his inventions, including the light bulb, photograph player camera equipment and many others.

Thomas Edison’s laboratory is a must-visit destination for those visiting Northern New Jersey. It’s filled with fascinating exhibits and displays, and you can spend several hours here walking through several buildings that were formerly used as his office, photo lab, workshop and other entrepreneurial purposes.

This is also a great rainy day experience because most of this attraction is indoors and it’s easy to visit in the rain. However, there is no air conditioning in most of these buildings so be careful about visiting during the hot summer months. Visit the park’s website for more information about planning your visit.

9. Tour Glenmont, Thomas Edison’s stunning estate

Nearby, Thomas Edison’s exquisite, stunning home is a must-visit destination for those visiting Northern New Jersey. It’s a very quick drive from the Thomas Edison National Historic Park (laboratory) entrance and situated in a beautiful, expansive park. You must arrange tours of this estate in advance, and tickets are released and purchased via the website only. The tours are small groups, and you may need to book a month or so in advance.

Note: You must get a pass from the National Park down the street before you are allowed to enter the park, which has a gate in the front. Be sure to visit this website in advance for instructions.

10. Visit Ocean Grove, NJ and see the famous “tent community”

The lovely town of Ocean Grove, New Jersey is certainly one of the unique beachfront destinations on the Jersey shore. From May through Labor Day every year, over a hundred bungalow-style tents are erected and occupied by families and people of all ages who love the shore. These tented cottages are about 600 square feet, have a canvas roof and are connected to a small wooden structure. The tent community is adjacent to the “Camp Meeting Association,” which rents out the tents for $8,000 per year for the season, and there’s a very long waiting list (for decades) and not surprisingly, a multi-step application process.

The tents are located just a few blocks from the center of town and a few blocks from the beach as well.

If you choose to walk through this area, be respectful of the residents, as pets are not allowed and they have strict “no noise” policy in the evenings.

11. Stroll around the historic town of Rutherford, NJ

Just outside of New York City (and a quick drive from the former “Meadowlands”), this cute and lively town is walkable — and home to many great independently-owned shops, including clothing boutiques, a vinyl record store and a music store, breakfast cafes and a multitude of great restaurants, fun bars — and more! Don’t miss the wonderfully delicious bagels at the Bagel Exchange in the center of town. You can easily spend an afternoon here, as there are several blocks filled with local businesses of all kinds.

It’s a great home base if you’re planning to see a game at MetLife Stadium or a concert at the nearby arena.

12. Go back in time at the Old Barracks museum in Trenton, NJ

The Old Barracks Museum, located in Trenton, New Jersey, stands as a remarkable testament to America’s rich history and its struggle for independence. Built in 1758 during the French and Indian War, the Barracks served as a military garrison and later played a pivotal role in the American Revolution.

A visit to the Old Barracks is a journey through time, an opportunity to honor the past and gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history. This location witnessed significant events, including the Battle of Trenton in 1776, when General George Washington and his troops famously crossed the icy Delaware River to launch a surprise attack on Hessian mercenaries. 13. Tour the Wick House in Jockey Hollow

16. Visit the Proprietary House

History buffs — especially those who are interested in Benjamin Franklin — will enjoy visiting The Proprietary House, a grand mansion in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. It was the home of the last colonial governor of New Jersey, William Franklin, who was Ben Franklin’s son. Visitors who tour the house will see original artifacts from the Franklin family, as well as learn about life in 18th-century New Jersey.

As a South Jersey local and area expert, I have visited all of these great local places multiple times throughout the year. I was also born and raised in Philadelphia, so I spent many years driving over the bridge to South Jersey for shopping. Often, I wondered what else I could do or visit while I was in the area (after shopping, of course)!

If you live in Philadelphia, you may have visited Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, or Collingswood, New Jersey for shopping or dining (just like me)! This part of South Jersey is called Camden County — and is only a few miles from Philly.

This area is home to an abundance of interesting, independently-owned stores, great, under-the-radar parks, and a multitude of larger malls and shopping centers. It’s filled with fun things to see and do — for adults as well as kids!

If you want to explore the area, there are many worthwhile places to visit in South Jersey — and this post is specifically for activities for adults in Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, Collingswood, and nearby. These towns are located just across the Delaware River (via the Ben Franklin Bridge) and are less than a 10-minute drive from the main shopping centers in Cherry Hill. And yes, this includes Garden State Shopping Center on Route 70 (that’s the large shopping center where Wegmans, Trader Joe’s, Home Goods (and many other stores) are located! Note: Route 70 has a lot of construction going on these days, so expect a bit of traffic.

16 fun things to do in South Jersey (Cherry Hill, Haddonfield, and Collingswood areas) + a bonus beach destination!

There’s more to South Jersey than meets the eye! Once you discover all these lovely spots in the area, you’ll want to explore even more fun places. And these are all located in and around the Cherry Hill area, so all of these destinations are within a short drive within Camden County.

1. Visit the town of Haddonfield, NJ

The town of Haddonfield is historic, charming, and walkable and a short drive from the massive Garden State Park Shopping Center on Route 70 in Cherry Hill. Haddonfield is quaint, picturesque, and home to many independently-owned cool boutiques, cafes, and an array of restaurants. 

As you walk (or drive) along Kings Highway, the area’s main street, you will see plenty of activity – lots of pedestrians and fun shops of all kinds — including clothing boutiques, bookshops, art galleries, coffees shops, tea and spice shops, upscale consignment and thrift shops — and home design stores. There’re also cafes, restaurants, and the award-winning Kings Road brewery.

A few of my many favorite spots in Haddonfield: an independent bookstore, Inkwood Books; a fantastic hand-crafted chocolatier, Mecha Chocolate, a great Mexican restaurant, Canela Mexica Cafe and an awesome Mediterranean restaurant, called Zaffron Mediterranean Cuisine.

During the year, Haddonfield hosts many events, street fairs, and markets, so if you go, and you want to attend (or avoid) these events, If you like farmer’s markets, check out Haddonfield farmer’s market. Don’t forget….Most other small towns have farmer’s markets, too, such as Westmont and Collingswood (dates vary).

Dates to know for Haddonfield in 2026: Their annual “Skirmish” happens on Kings Highway in early June. It’s a Revolutionary War reenactment of when the troops met in this very spot! Get there early, because it’s a popular event! More details are here. Another big event in Haddonfield is the Craft and Fine Art Festival (usually in early July).

2. See the famous dinosaur statue in Haddonfield, NJ

Haddonfield is a quaint small town that’s filled with surprises! In fact, there’s a dinosaur statue in the middle of town because it was the first place in the world where a dinosaur skeleton was discovered in the 1800s. (Trivia: Steven Spielberg’s boyhood home was nearby — and he has revealed that this inspired those award-winning Jurassic Park films). You can see a dedication to him in front of the Westmont Theater — on Haddon Avenue!

The dinosaur statue is in the middle of everything, so you won’t miss it if you’re just strolling around. This is an especially delightful activity if you have kids, or if you’re a dinosaur enthusiast! Created by sculptor John Giannotti, this statue of Hadrosaurus is eight feet tall and eighteen feet in length.

Parking hint for Haddonfield: If you can’t find a metered parking spot along Kings Highway, don’t worry….there are several BIG parking lots behind the stores — and there are tons of parking spots at the Haddonfield PATCO train station at the south end of Kings Highway. Again, these are all metered spots. Note: Finding handicapped parking spots marked for disabled persons on the street can be challenging, and you’ll definitely find more options in the parking lots.

3. Visit a brewery in Haddonfield, NJ

Although Haddonfield is considered a “dry town,” you will find a brewery here! This means you won’t find any stores that sell alcohol, but you can enjoy a few pints at the local brewery, Kings Road Brewing Company It’s a cool, corner spot with plenty of seating — both at the bar and at tables. In warmer months, there’s an outdoor patio in the front and in the back of this brewery.

The brewery opened in 2017 and attracts a loyal crowd, as they offer handcrafted beer and seasonal releases all year long. The beer menu is extensive so you can order a flight and taste a variety of brews. It’s usually a lively and fun crowd, so you’ll definitely enjoy the ambiance if you stop by.

Note: Breweries in NJ are not allowed to sell food, so you will need to pick up a snack at a local place (and there are plenty nearby). If you like to sip cocktails, down the street is the newer Wiildfether Distillery, a fun two-story cocktail lounge set in a historical home. (See Number 16 below)!

4. Check out the cool town of Collingswood, NJ

The town of Collingswood is not far from Haddonfield. In fact, it’s just a short drive down Haddon Avenue. This is also a historic town, and in recent years has become a cool destination within the suburbs, as it’s walkable and vibrant. There are many new apartments in this area, as well as lots of stores, cafes, boutiques, and restaurants along Haddon Avenue. 

You can easily spend several leisurely hours strolling around Collingswood, as there’s a lot to explore, with many shops and businesses in this town. If you’re planning to come here for dinner, it’s best to make a reservation in advance. Note: Collingswood is a dry town, so be sure to BYOB to the restaurant!

Collingswood hosts many events, markets, and parades throughout the year! There’s always something exciting happening in this vibrant town!

5. Sip some delicious Greek coffee in Collingswood, NJ

Along Collingswood’s Haddon Avenue, there’s a wide array of local, family-run businesses. I personally love the ambiance at Koupa Espresso Bar for a coffee (technically located in Haddon Township). This friendly coffee shop offers plenty of Greek pastries (they even make authentic Greek coffee!) It’s an ideal place to meet a friend or bring your laptop and hang out for a bit. Afterward, if you’re in the mood to shop for some food items, Haddon Culinary Gourmet market always has some freshly made specialties. 

It’s a fun place to explore, especially when the weather is nice — and you’re sure to discover some interesting finds along the way. If you wish to check out the restaurant scene, it’s best to make a reservation at the more popular spots, especially on the weekend. 

Parking note for Collingswood: Parking is tough here! If you find a parking spot on the street, you need to pay at the kiosk. Try to park at the Collingswood PATCO station and walk a block to the center of town.

6. Explore Cooper River Park in Cherry Hill

Cooper River Park is a lovely place to walk (or run), enjoy nature, explore, go for a bike ride, paddleboard — or admire the lovely scenery. 

Cooper River Park is a large, 700-acre park located in two townships — Cherry Hill on one side and Pennsauken on the other. It features a paved pathway that’s nearly 5 miles around — and it’s picturesque, with river views and several lookout points, seating, and picnic areas. You’ll also find a large playground, a running track, a few lookout points with seating — and a number of interesting monuments along the way. You can also go boating and fishing here.

On weekends, it’s a busy place and it’s usually very lively during the summer months. It’s a popular spot for rowing events, 5k run / walks, and live music. During the warmer months, there’s canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and fishing, and you can also take sailing lessons here.

Tip for Philly visitors: The Philadelphia skyline is visible from the eastern side of the lake, and the best views are at sunrise and sunset. (And yes, there’s a parking lot there!)

7. Enjoy lunch or dinner with a great view of the Cooper River

At Cooper River Park, there’s a cool, casual restaurant, La Scalas Birra, situated on the lake that features great food, an outdoor patio, and pretty views. This restaurants serves up an array of Italian specialties in a casual environment, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Check it out for pizza, salads, and other tasty Italian specialties. We love to go in the warmer months, as you can sit out on one of their decks and admire the views, and it’s especially pretty at sunset.

The good news is that this restaurant has a large parking lot, too!

Additional Parking note for Cooper River Park: There is a lot of parking around here — several lots are around the park. However, if there is a big event going on, parking may be a bit more difficult. 

8. Visit Croft Farm in Cherry Hill (home to a playground & easy hiking trails)

Decades ago, Cherry Hill was mostly farmland. There are a number of small parks around Cherry Hill, and most have paved pathways (almost every small town in this area has one). Croft Farm in Cherry Hill is a great place to visit and a historic landmark. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places, as it was formerly a mill and farm, as well as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Today, it’s an arts center and features wooded walking trails, a paved walking path, a new dog park, separated into areas for large and small dogs, and (newer) restrooms, too. There are several flat (very easy) wooded hiking trails that surround the property. They are marked and relatively simple, but it’s definitely a wooded area that can feel remote when the leaves are on the trees — so be aware!

Croft Farm hosts events throughout the year as well, such as their Christmas tree lighting, eco-friendly events, food truck events and more. Usually, there’s plenty of parking throughout this property!

Steps away from Croft Farm, you’ll see Challenge Grove Park, which is adjacent to the farm, with an awesome and very popular large playground (Jake’s Place), as well as flat (very easy) paved walking path. On summer weekends, the playground tends to get busy, as there’s also a shaded picnic pavilion here, too.

9. Go to Wegmans supermarket (especially if you haven’t been here!)

If you don’t live near a Wegmans supermarket, this is your chance to check out the most popular market in Cherry Hill! Wegmans is an elevated shopping / supermarket experience located on Route 70 in Cherry Hill. It has something for everyone, and always has a massive selection of fresh produce, seafood, baked goods and more. (And if you’re hungry, you can purchase a multitude of prepared foods and eat your meal in the cafe area.)

To purchase alcohol, you’ll need to go across the parking lot. Wegmans has a separate liquor store in a stand-alone building facing the supermarket. This shopping area is huge, and you’ll find a Trader Joes, Costco, Ulta Beauty, Barnes and Noble — and much more!

Hint: Wegmans is very popular on weekends, so be prepared for crowds. But the parking lot is huge — and you’ll always find a spot!

10. Dine at the Pub — the most retro restaurant around!

Are you seeking a classic, Old-School type of restaurant? This is it! So many of us who live in Southern New Jersey and Philadelphia have grown up going to The Pub in Pennsauken for dinner — especially for special occasions. If you’re interested in taking a step back in time and if you love charcoal-fired meats, chicken, and classic seafood dishes, check out The Pub. (And for fans of salad bars, you’ll become an instant loyalist, as this salad bar has everything!) Meat lovers keep coming back for the steaks, and we love the crabcake dish — it’s one of our personal faves!

The Pub always feels festive, in a retro, fun ski-lodge kind of way. In addition to the great food, The Pub has an awesome bar with a robust selection of budget-friendly cocktails.

11. See where Bruce Springsteen was photographed in Haddonfield, NJ

Are you a Bruce Springsteen fan? You can visit several important sights in E Street history in Southern New Jersey. In the late 1970s, Bruce Springsteen drove down the New Jersey Turnpike to the quaint, quiet town of Haddonfield from his home in North Jersey. Why? For a photo shoot by photographer Frank Stefanko, who lived in this town. His resulting photos became super-famous — and very recognizable as the cover of Springsteen’s 1978 album, Darkness of the Edge of Town (featuring Bruce in front of flowered wallpaper). A number of his photos also appeared on his 1980 double album, The River, including the cover photo!

The indoor photos of Bruce were all taken inside Stefanko’s Haddonfield house. If you walk (or drive) down Kings Highway, you’ll see two memorable spots where Bruce posed outdoors on this cold winter day: the first is in front of the historic Indian King Tavern located at 233 Kings Highway East (now a historical site and museum — not a tavern). The second one is a where a well-known shot of Bruce leaning against a barber pole was taken. This was the location of Frank’s barber shop, which is now closed permanently. There are also a few images of him leaning against his Chevrolet Corvette, the vehicle that he drove there! You’ll notice there’s visible snow on the ground in most of these images.

But that’s not all! Back on Kings Highway (Route 41) in Cherry Hill, NJ, you’ll find a massive bowling alley (with billiards and arcade games) called Lucky Strike. Bruce Springsteen fans get an extra treat! This bowling alley was formerly called Uncle Al’s Erlton Theater Lounge — and Bruce and his band played a gig here on a memorable night in 1973. I’m told it was a rainy night and there were only about ten people in the audience.

Bonus points: You can see the original sign (pictured above) hanging “somewhere” inside (and notice the misspelling in Bruce’s last name).

Today, Bruce Springsteen is 76 years old and still touring the world with the legendary E Street Band! In fact, he just finished his world tour in Milan, Italy, with two incredibly high-energy shows in early July.

12. Drive under a covered bridge in Cherry Hill, NJ

Take a pleasant drive down Covered Bridge road in Cherry Hill and you’ll soon be winding your way under the famous Scarborough Bridge (AKA “Kissing Bridge”) one of two remaining covered bridges in New Jersey. This wooden bridge is considered a neighborhood landmark and has an exciting history, as it was created by Robert Scarborough, who developed the surrounding community (Barclay Farm) from farmland in the 1950s. The bridge was built by New Jersey architect Malcolm Wells.

This covered bridge is called the “Kissing Bridge” as it was dedicated on Valentine’s Day in 1959. Exactly 101 local couples joined in the dedication with a big smooch. If you want to spend a little time experiencing this two-lane covered bridge, you can park close by (on a side street, please), walk over the bridge, and admire the architecture and rustic scenery, including the creek (from the North Branch of the Cooper River) that runs beneath it.

How to find the covered bridge: It’s located in the center of Cherry Hill. Covered Bridge road runs between Route 70 and Kresson roads, and takes you through the Barclay Farm development.

13. Visit a hidden brewery in Cherry Hill, NJ

Beer enthusiasts love discovering new places, and Mechanical Brewery in Cherry Hill is one of those under-the-radar spots. You won’t find this on a main road, as it’s a bit off-the-beaten-path, but once you find it, you’ll be impressed with the beer selection, the fun ambiance, and the friendly staff. Even if you don’t have time to for a beer, you can purchase some unique cans or growlers to take home with you and sip later!

14. Tour the Battleship New Jersey

The Battleship New Jersey (USS New Jersey) is located in Camden on the waterfront, just across the river from Philadelphia. The Battleship New Jersey (USS New Jersey) is the most decorated ship in the United States and a national treasure. This ship has received honors for participating in several wars across the world — from 1938 until 1991.

The ship was decommissioned in 1991 and today its permanent home is Camden, NJ. The ship is now a fascinating history museum with a past that’s worth celebrating. There are a number of tours available throughout the year, some specific for adults and/or kids. Visitors may need to plan in advance, but it’s well worth touring this incredible floating historical landmark. More information about the Battleship NJ (and how to visit) can be found here.

15. Visit the Haddonfield Sculpture Zoo (for Children or adults seeking a quiet park)

If you have young children (or if you would like to sit and relax in a small neighborhood park), visit the Haddonfield Sculpture Zoo. Established by the Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust, this company park features bronze animal sculptures from a number of artists around the world. You’ll see a giraffe, a seal, an elephant, a toad, and more. There are plenty of benches for seating and trees for shade, and it’s a fun little spot for kids to run around and explore!

16. Visit a chic distillery in the center of Haddonfield: Wildfether

Ready to take a break and a few cocktails? Check out the Wildfether Distillery, located in a historical Victorian building along Kings Highway in Haddonfield. This large, multi-story space features two bars, an abundance of couches and lounge-style seating where you can your friends can enjoy a variety of hand-crafted sophisticated cocktails made from gin, rum, vodka, and whiskey made on site.

Cocktails here are balanced and made with care, and you’ll be impressed with the many choices — Wildfether also offers “non-alcoholic” beverages, too.

This establishment has a large parking lot in the back, and often looks very quiet from the street. Don’t let that fool you, as it’s always best to make a reservation here. There’s no food served, but you can order food from nearby restaurants (or bring your own snacks).

17. Skateboard at a new Skatepark & pumptrack – just for fun!

If you’re a skateboarder (or just like to admire the skaters carving, shredding the park and learning new tricks), check out the new Cooper River Skatepark in Cherry Hill. This new park opened in 2025 and is a fun, scenic place to skate. There’s plenty for newbies and experienced skaters here — there’s even a pump track! It’s the only skate park in Cherry Hill (there are others in Pennsauken, Maple Shade, Camden, and Medford). (Note: there is NOT much shade at the Cooper River Skatepark, so be aware if you’re planning to go on a hot day).

18. Take a road trip to Cape May, NJ (Bonus activity!)

If you have more time or you’re seeking a fun day trip from Cherry Hill, keep driving down Route 70 to several NJ beaches, including Long Beach Island. Or take a ride down the Atlantic City Expressway to visit Ocean City, Ventnor City Beach — or even Cape May, which is located at the Southern-most point in New Jersey. Most shore points are about an hour’s drive from Cherry Hill area. Although Cape May is farthest away, it’s still perfectly doable for a day trip — unless it’s a holiday weekend, of course.

Cape May is considered one of the loveliest and most unique beach towns in New Jersey. It features a multitude of historic bed and breakfasts and inns, a quiet boardwalk, and some highly-rated restaurants. Often referred to as “quaint,” it certainly has a different vibe from most of the other Jersey shore towns.

Cape May, New Jersey, is an enchanting, affluent destination that seamlessly blends a warm, friendly atmosphere with a rich historical heritage. Exploring Cape May offers a delightful experience for both tourists and professionals seeking respite from the bustle of everyday life.

You can buy beer and enjoy hanging out at the Haddonfield Brewery, Kings Road, which is on King’s Highway and the winery, which is also on Kings Highway…..but you CAN’T purchase food at either of these places, because they are not allowed to sell it.

You can, however, purchase your own food and eat it at these places, as you drink your beer or wine. So the best plan is…get your food first or order it — then go to the brewery, distillery or winery. Or, just order your food from a local restaurant while you’re already at these establishments and get it delivered right to you — or pick it up.

Do Haddonfield, NJ restaurants sell alcohol?

Do Haddonfield restaurants sell alcohol? Haddonfield was originally developed as a dry town, so NO, you can’t BUY any alcohol in any restaurants in Haddonfield, but you can BRING your own (BYOB) in Haddonfield. Many restaurants in NJ are “BYOB,” so be sure to check in advance. The good news is that NJ has liquor stores just about everywhere. The larger stores (such as Wegman’s and Total Wine) are massive supermarket-style stores. However, there are smaller stores around as well.

Is Cherry Hill, NJ a dry town? No, Cherry Hill is not a dry town, BUT there are many restaurants that do NOT sell alcohol, due to the expensive cost of liquor licenses. To make this more confusing, the adjacent town of Westmont is NOT dry! You’ll find several bars and restaurants here that serve alcohol.

Parking in Southern New Jersey is relatively easy. Most businesses in Cherry Hill have (usually large) parking lots. Many of the parks and outdoor spaces mentioned in this article have free parking. However, the towns of Collingswood and Haddonfield have street parking with parking meters. Some of these meters still require coins, while there are kiosks at others. Keep in mind that rules change often, so be sure to read the signs when you park.

Liberty Science Center is a fascinating and fun state-of-the-art 300,000 square-foot science museum located in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park. This world-class museum attracts over 750,000 visitors each year with several exceptional features, including a live animal collection with over 100 species, twelve exhibit halls, galleries, massive aquariums, a 3D theater, and tornado simulators. Although it’s made for children, visitors of all ages can easily spend an entire day exploring this exceptional museum. And if you get hungry, there is a café on-site, and there’s a gift shop that sells some cool souvenirs. It’s best to book tickets in advance, as this attraction tends to get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Family memberships are also available annually.

Newark Liberty International Airport is considered by most travelers to be a New York City airport. As one of the northeast’s major travel hubs, Newark Liberty International Airport is always crowded, especially during rush hour times. Even though it may appear to be a relatively quick 12-mile drive from Manhattan, it’s usually a longer ride due to traffic congestion. Once inside the airport terminal area, you will also be met with traffic as cars slow down to drop off and pick-up passengers. Be aware of potentially stressful traffic jams and avoid morning drive times and busy peak times, such as Friday afternoons.

There are three terminals at EWR: A, B, and C, all arranged in a semi-circle, with parking lots on the inner portion of the horseshoe. There are satellite parking lots outside of the terminal area as well. Each terminal has its own security checkpoint, and all gates are located within the specific terminals.

Here are 15 fantastic destinations across the Garden State.

Hoboken

Located on the Hudson River across from New York City (and just south of Weehawken), the hometown of world-famous singer Frank Sinatra is popular with commuters who travel into the city daily. It may not be as busy or bustling as Manhattan, but it’s filled with great restaurants, bars, music venues, cool boutiques, and other retail shops. You can also stroll along the river and admire a jaw-dropping view of the NYC skyline. If you wish to venture into the Big Apple, it’s an easy trip via the PATH train from the local station.

Liberty State Park

In northern New Jersey, Liberty State Park is the optimal spot to gaze upon the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Over 1,200 acres and featuring a 2-mile paved pathway called the Liberty Walk, this park has many options for things to see, including the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial, Liberty Science Museum, and the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal. While you’re here, you can also take a boat cruise to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island up close (advance tickets are recommended). 

Island Beach State Park

If you want to get a glimpse of what the New Jersey shore was like before it was built up with boardwalks, homes, beach bars, and carnival rides, check out Island Beach State Park. This area is situated on a 10-mile barrier island and requires an entrance fee ($6 per car for residents and $10 for non-residents). It’s open year-round, and offers plenty of amenities during the summer season, including lifeguards, picnic areas, restrooms, a sundry shop, and a snack bar with casual treats. For a more secluded experience, visitors can choose to park in a number of different spots along the shore and enjoy some tranquil beach time.
