You’ll notice “some” of these hotels include the name “Philadelphia” in the title. These hotels are not in Philadelphia. It’s just a way for the hotel companies to show that these properties are close by.

Smell those delicious chocolate chip cookies! (That’s exactly the aroma that greets you when you walk in the door to this lovely hotel!!) This hotel is one of the few in the area that features suite-style rooms with a separate bedroom and a door between that and the living area. It’s a great option for anyone traveling with children or those seeking some extra privacy. I’ve personally had family members stay here from out-of-town on several occasions and they enjoyed it.

Hamburg, Germany’s dynamic culinary scene has been evolving rapidly in recent years, attracting the attention of food-loving locals and tourists alike. Across the city (and in a variety of neighborhoods), restaurants, cafes, distilleries and other innovative gastronomic destinations are popping up in an array of places around town.

As a seaport city, Hamburg has been traditionally known for its seafood, but today, it’s considered a hot spot for culinary diversity. Hamburg’s cuisine has been transformed into a fusion of North German tradition and modern international styles.

In the center of Hamburg, chef Sebastian Glävke heads up the 100-seat Böckmann’s restaurant, located in the newly-opened Courtyard Marriott Hamburg City hotel. The concept of Böckmann’s restaurant was inspired by indoor food halls and fish markets. The sophisticated space features an open kitchen and hip, modern ambiance, while the menu showcases regularly-changing dishes made with fresh regional ingredients.

Chef Glävke explained, “Hamburg has many things to offer, from little restaurants in alternative areas to Michelin-starred restaurants. We have a great mix of cultures here, which you can see in different ways and cooking styles in the restaurants. You can find the traditional French-inspired cuisine, but also young chefs who are willing to cook old Northern German dishes by giving them a special and modern twist.”

At Böckmann’s restaurant, chef Glävke and his team recently introduced a “tartar bar,” the first in the city. It features a number of diverse options, such as beef tartar with baba ganoush (a blended puree of fire-roasted eggplants with Tahini sauce), fresh lemon juice and coriander. It’s served with homemade Naan bread.

But the menu isn’t limited to meat. They also offer tartar with salmon or vegetables, and guests are invited to create their own combinations as well.

He pointed out, “Guests love the salmon tartar with a miso and nut butter marinade. This tartar is inspired by the Asian cuisine and it comes along with krupuk (shrimp crisps).”

Glävke added that the tartar concept was a truly a team effort. “The idea of the tartar bar came from Petra Bierwirth, the hotel’s business owner, and our area manager Bernd Mensing. They introduced me to the idea and I was absolutely fascinated by the opportunities we could create with a concept like this. Tartar is well-known, but is also a dish often forgotten about. In most restaurants, tartar is served the traditional way, but we’re striving to change it into a modern and fresher dish.”

Taste tours in Hamburg

To ensure that local and visiting food enthusiasts get the chance to have a big taste of Hamburg, a food-focused tour company, called Taste Tours has recently launched in the city to introduce both locals and tourists to the diverse food scene. For each tour, the company carefully chooses several restaurants and food businesses across several neighborhoods, depending on the availability and capacity, etc.

Paul Beutin is the Taste Tours location manager for Hamburg and Berlin. He says, “Thanks to the expertise of Foodguide, Europe’s largest social gastronomy network (and one of the three founding companies of Taste Tours), the restaurants have been selected with great accuracy. The restaurants are selected by Taste Tours because they have proven themselves as culinary hot spots.”

He continued, “On the one hand, we hope that the local participants will get to know (and love) new restaurants in their city. On the other hand, the Taste Tours gives our international guests the opportunity to visit several curated restaurants on one evening without any effort. In addition, all tour guests can get exciting insights into the very different gastronomic concepts, take a look behind the scenes and learn new food facts.”

On a recent excursion, Taste Tours brought guests to these three noteworthy, yet under-the-radar spots in Hamburg. These unique businesses are examples of the city’s diverse food offerings that are changing the culinary face of the city:

Drilling

In Hamburg’s Bahrenfeld neighborhood, Drilling is considered a “triple-threat,” a café, bar and micro distillery. (In fact, the word “drilling” means triplet in German). Located in a former marzipan factory, this unique gastronomic concept opened in 2018 and has become extremely popular with locals who adore the fresh brewed coffees and teas served in the morning (along with fresh pastries).

This chic, comfortable industrial space features soaring ceilings, plenty of tables and other seating at the stunning bar where mixologists serve up craft cocktails featuring their house-made spirits (as well as other premium offerings). If you’re lucky, guests can also take a peek at the distillery in the back room that features beautiful copper stills – and see how the small-bath spirits (gin and a variety of brandies) are made on the premises.

Throughout the month, Drilling often hosts live music and other events.

Beutin loves bringing his Taste Tours guests to Drilling because it’s a unique, beautiful space and a fascinating experience overall. He said, “There is no comparable project in Europe that houses so much gastronomic craftsmanship within its walls.”

Damettto Nudeln

Situated in the Eppendorf neighborhood, the cozy storefront Dametto is all about a homemade Italian classic: fresh pasta. Owned and operated by Monica Dametto, a transplanted Italian who has been living in Hamburg for over 15 years, this pasta workshop is all about interactive fun in the kitchen.

Dametto says, “I started this business just for fun – because of my cooking and pasta obsession. Making pasta always gives you a nice feeling.”

Dametto offers a variety of small-group cooking classes, where guests can learn how to make pasta from scratch, either by hand or by operating the professional, high-powered appliances. Participants can take turns at cooking the specialties as well, as the shop features a compact, yet incredibly versatile kitchen.

The dishes may include traditional linguine – or a modern spin on pastas, such as turmeric spaghetti, cocoa tagliatelle or gnocchetti featuring Italian durum wheat and fresh eggs from the region. Dametto also features intimate group events (such as singles nights and private parties).

And if you’re just passing by, you can watch the action outside the large window – or go inside to purchase some gourmet products as well.

Underdocks

In the St. Pauli area, Underdocks is an off-the-beaten-path restaurant that features “gourmet” fast food in a gritty atmosphere, serving up traditional and modern seafood dishes in a casual, welcoming setting. With a menu full of freshly prepared, reinterpreted classics, this restaurant offers a wide variety of generously-portioned options, including ceviche, fried codfish, lobster rolls, crayfish rolls, pulled salmon tacos, salads and vegetarian specialties as well.

With a design that pays homage to the city’s seaport, local docks and fisheries, Underdocks features high ceilings, wooden tables and floors, as well as metal and steel accents, including a shipping container in dining area that adds an authentic accent.

Featuring a full bar, with local beer, the restaurant is open all day and guests can easily order a quick bite – or something more substantial and dine at a more leisurely pace.

Don Manuel’s restaurant

Showcasing modern delights inspired by the classics, Don Manuel’s is the resort’s signature eatery that’s open for breakfast and dinner. This stylish open-air restaurant features jaw-dropping views of the beach and ocean from just about every table.

Guests can start the morning off with a delectable breakfast that includes omelettes and plenty of local favorites (as well a fresh fruit smoothie bar) prepared with local, organic ingredients.

In the evening, the restaurant transforms into a sophisticated and lovely terraced destination. A few dinner specialties include roasted totoaba “Veracruzana” with capers, olives, tomato, chile sauce, celery root and spiced beets; catch of the day “Zarandeado” with peanuts adobo, orange and salad with cilantro; and braised lamb shank “mixiote” style with roasted vegetables, ancho and guajillo chile sauce.

Crudo Bar

The resort’s unique Crudo Bar is situated in the shade under the thatched pavilion adjacent to the main swimming pool. Ideal for a snack, the bar offers a wide selection of freshly prepared items, including catch of the day tiraditos; black shrimp ceviche; seafood molcajete; tostadas and zesty Mexican-inspired rolls made with fresh, regional ingredients.

The Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is an expansive beachfront resort and the second-largest on the island of Maui. Located on the southwestern coast’s golden crescent of sand in the upscale Wailea neighborhood, the resort is emblematic of a picture-perfect Hawaiian getaway. Sprawling, tropical gardens, meandering pathways, a wedding chapel, several swimming pools, bubbling fountains, beach access, a massive spa, multiple restaurants, and more all curate an idyllic escape. 

As a frequent Hawaii visitor, I’ve been to the islands multiple times over the years for vacation, business trips, my own honeymoon, and a friend’s wedding. And whenever I find myself on Maui, I always choose the Grand Wailea. Renowned for housing the largest private art collection in Hawaii with sculptures, paintings, and other artifacts, the resort is ideal for the well-heeled set seeking a luxury vacation, while still being welcoming to families. The luxe Waldorf property is a member of Hilton Worldwide, offering brand loyalists the chance to earn and redeem points in this resort with a coveted beachfront locale.

There’s so much to discover, it can be fun to get lost wandering around the grounds — as long as you don’t mind all the walking. With a large resort of this size, there can be plenty of that. 

Rooms vary from standard garden view varieties to mid-tier oven view offerings, and even multi-bedroom villas. Due to the size of this property, there’s constant upkeep and refurbishment required. At all times, there always seems to be an area under renovation or in the midst of a refresh.

I recently stayed in a Deluxe Ocean View room, comped for review, but starts at $750 per night, plus tax and a resort fee. While in line with other luxury Hawaiian hotels, it’s far from cheap, and the kind of worthy splurge you’ll only make once in a while. But when you do, it promises to feel worth it.

There’s no place in Hawaii quite like the Grand Wailea thanks to its incredible first impression.

The stately, breezy main entrance leads to an outdoor, white stone lobby, where I was given a flower lei, a tropical welcome cocktail, and warmly greeted by a resort representative who ushered me to the front desk for check-in.

As I’ve stayed at this hotel a few times over the years, I’ve found that this process usually takes several minutes. The resort is massive and the check-in attendant provides an unhurried and thorough introduction to the property, giving an overview of its multiple restaurants, pools, spa, etc. The hotel is comprised of several buildings, so guests are also shown the location of their room and a few key sights on a small paper map. I was prepared for this, but keep it in mind if you’re arriving with significant jet lag and encounter a queue.

Despite the laidback tropical ambiance, this hotel gets busy, and it’s not unusual to see large groups of families or business professionals gathering for celebrations or corporate events. Thankfully, the crowds can’t manage to dilute the picturesque feeling, and the property is so large, I’ve always been able to enjoy my own space among the natural beauty of the gardens and beach.

The rooms at the Grand Wailea are well-appointed and tasteful, and each has a lanai, or, private balcony. 

On my recent visit, I stayed in the mid-tier Deluxe Ocean View room, which was comped for review purposes but typically starts around $750 per night.

This 640-square foot-room category was recently renovated and designed simply with wood floors, minimalist furnishings and a neutral color palette with splashes of seafoam green. The room itself was not lavish but felt streamlined, updated, and comfortable in terms of size and decor. Unlike most island properties, the look felt Scandi modern rather than the overt Hawaiian look more typically seen.

I found the bed to be on the firm side, which I personally prefer and slept well. When I’m in Hawaii, I usually wake up pre-dawn the first few days due to the time difference and enjoyed watching the sunrise from the room’s lanai, which was spacious with comfortable seating for two on cushioned reclining chairs separated by a wooden table. The stunning view overlooked the lush gardens and the ocean waves beyond.

The room also had a desk with two chairs situated close to the lanai, and I found it delightful to have a view while catching up on work. I travel with several electronic devices and was relieved to find the room’s technology up-to-date, with plenty of electrical outlets, and fast Wi-Fi. 

The room also had a mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, 55-inch flat-screen TVs, and a sizable closet with robes and slippers.

The well-lit bathroom was spacious with an abundance of counter space, excellent lighting, and an oversized glass-walled shower and a separate soaking tub. Although the bathroom was sizeable, and could easily be used as a changing room, it wasn’t renovated. Though the extra space certainly made up for the lack of updates, and I enjoyed the honey mango scented bath products from the on-site Spa Grande.

I enjoyed room perks such as excellent housekeeping and nightly turn-down service, though I did struggle with personalized service at such a large hotel. For example, when I tried to call the front desk for a question, I had to listen to a lengthy recording and it was a challenge to actually reach a live person.

Additionally, be prepared to get your steps in. Since the property is so spread out, and the rooms are as well, it was about at least a seven-minute walk to the lobby, and about the same distance to the pool. And with the meandering garden pathways, there’s no quick access to the beach. 

If you’d prefer slightly cheaper accommodations, the Deluxe designation is only a slight upgrade over regular Ocean View rooms, in that they’re located on higher floors. Most rooms are situated on a diagonal to provide full or partial ocean views so choosing standard Ocean View is hardly a compromise.

The lowest-priced standard room is a Deluxe King or Queen Garden View, which similarly, only differs in view. It starts at approximately $651 per night, so if you don’t mind sacrificing a view of the ocean, it’s a good way to save $100 nightly, while still enjoying a vantage point over the beautiful landscaping.

A unique luxury property that’s considered one of the top resorts in Hawaii, Grand Wailea won’t come cheap, especially for an ocean view room. But for the overall experience and ambiance, I would happily pay these room rates to stay at such a magnificent resort. 

The Grand Wailea features such an incredible number of amenities that you really don’t need to leave the property. As such, a daily resort fee of $45 is added to each room per night and covers a variety of guest-only amenities and activities. Valet parking costs an additional $40, plus tax, per day, and self-parking is not available.

There are several pools, including the Wailea Canyon pool, an aquatic dream for families and kids. It’s over 2,000 feet long and features nine connected pools on six levels, surrounded by tropical foliage. There are several large and small water slides, three hot tubs, six waterfalls, rope bridges, swings, a “water elevator,” and a baby pool as well.

Adults are also welcome to enjoy the family pool area. My splash down the network of water slides took almost 30 minutes that included floating under waterfalls and down lazy rivers.

But when it was time to relax, I preferred the 5,000-foot-long Hibiscus Pool, which felt less frenetic and offered a lovely space to enjoy the afternoon. Due to the resort’s large size, I found lounge chairs readily available and attendants to help set them up, though private cabanas are available to rent as well.

The resort’s Spa Grande also should not be missed. The largest spa in Hawaii at 50,000 square feet, it features 40 treatment rooms and an extensive menu of services. Their one-of-a-kind “Healing Waters of Maui” hydrotherapy circuit is an oasis of waterfalls, saunas, and several specialty baths.

There’s also a large, modern fitness center with workout machines and a selection of weights. I never found it crowded, likely because there are so many other outdoor activities to try. 

The Grand Wailea features several restaurants and bars across the property at different price points.

The most impressive is Humuhumu, a beautifully-designed fine dining rustic outdoor restaurant on the resort’s lagoon with stellar ocean views. It’s known for a romantic ambiance and the menu showcases farm-to-table, delectable Polynesian cuisine with a large selection of freshly-caught seafood. Sunsets are especially dazzling here. I suggest asking for a table by the water if you want the most optimal vantage point.

Growing from a collection of beachside bungalows in 1917 to an elegant, VIP-favorite resort set on a prime stretch of Waikiki Beach, Halekulani has helped define luxury in Honolulu for decades. For 30 of those years, the ownership of the resort has also overseen the Waikiki Parc Hotel across the street, a more modest offering that lived in the shadow of its famous sister. Now, following a year-long, multi-million-dollar renovation, that property has been transformed into Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani—a boutique-style spot fueled by the luxury expertise of the Halekulani brand.

Officially opened on October 25, Halepuna Waikiki fills what the ownership saw as void in the Honolulu hotel landscape. With all the “recent and ongoing hotel renovations and redevelopment (in the city), it was an optimal time for the Halekulani brand to introduce the first and newest luxury boutique concept to Waikiki,” says Julie Arigo, General Manager of the Halepuna. “By including ‘Halekulani’ in the Halepuna Waikiki name, our owners made a commitment to ensure that the new hotel would (be deserving) of the reputation.”

As such, guests familiar with the Halekulani can expect the same high-end touches here. Designed by noted New York City-based firm Champalimaud Design, Halepuna (which translates to “house of welcoming waters”) greets you with an airy, light-filled lobby featuring a contemporary art collection commissioned exclusively for the property. The 284 rooms are awash in neutral colors, wood tones and high-tech touches like Toto Washlets, as well as soaring windows framing spectacular ocean views; many also have balconies, while the four suites have enough space to accommodate in-room spa treatments. Keen attention to detail is reflected throughout; guests will appreciate the speedy elevators, for example, which are a rarity in Waikiki.

The hotel’s serene focal point is the expansive 8^th floor “urban escape,” home to a 72-foot infinity-edge pool, hot tub, cabanas, a bar, and a garden with a unique reflexology path—all backed by panoramic views. Nearby is spacious fitness center that includes a generously-sized lanai, while the street-level features Halekulani Bakery and Restaurant, an all-day dining hub specializing in housemade artisan baked goods and sweets (there’s even a chocolate-making viewing window) and dishes crafted with locally-sourced ingredients. Most importantly, all spaces are attended to by a staff that gets the new philosophy. As Arigo notes, approximately 85 percent of the staff of the former Waikiki Parc Hotel were trained on the Halekulani service standards during the closure, and have now returned to showcase those elevated skills here.

Food-loving travelers can now add a new, exclusive oasis to their dream destination list.

Situated just outside of Modena, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is the luxurious Casa Maria Luigia, a stunning country inn surrounded by picturesque gardens, lovely fountains and art sculptures. But what makes this bed and breakfast so special isn’t just the gorgeous countryside and the artsy, posh ambiance.

It’s exceptional because it’s owned by the world-famous chef Massimo Bottura and his wife, Lara Gilmore. Known across the globe for his three-Michelin-star restaurant, Osteria Francescana, which is nearby and considered number one in the world, Bottura wanted to create a new, intimate destination in an area of Italy that is currently lacking in luxury accommodations.

After purchasing the sprawling 12-acre property two years ago, the couple renovated the 250-year-old estate and officially opened doors to guests in May 2019. As their first hotel venture, Maria Luigia is named after the chef’s mother, and exudes understated luxury with a whimsical vibe throughout.

Although it appears to be a traditional estate from the exterior, a second glance reveals ceramic sculptures of brightly-hued gelato perched atop the balcony directly above the main entrance, created by artist Giorgio Di Palma. It’s a sure sign of the fun and joyful ambiance that awaits inside, with unexpected art pieces and delightful décor.

Much like the chef’s iconic dishes that feature brilliant colors, vibrant flavors and astonishing textures (such as his dessert, Oops, I Dropped the Lemon Tart), the inn is inviting and filled with surprises at every turn. Each of the twelve rooms and suites (including a penthouse) is stylish, vibrant and unique, with high-end amenities, comfortable beds and modern walk-in showers (or deep, claw-foot bathtubs). A free minibar with local beverages is also included.

The home is accented with many personal items from the couple’s modern art collection. A few of the many artists include Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei and Jack Pearson. They created the ambiance with the help of locally-based designer Catia Baccolini, who has worked on the couple’s restaurants, as well as their own home.

Outside, guests can stroll through the gardens, relax on the patio, and lounge by the swimming pool while enjoying the lovely country views and listening to the sounds of abundant songbirds.

The couple wants to ensure that guests enjoy every moment of their stay. If you’re lucky, you will have the chance to meet and chat with Lara, who is involved in every aspect of the inn. She may be outside, as she recently created an expansive vegetable and herb garden and an adjacent orchard with fruit trees behind the home.

“And guests are always invited to help out in the garden,” she joked. She’s also happy to point out some of her favorite art pieces throughout the common areas or discuss the design of the rooms. High-energy chef Massimo often stops by the inn as well, and he’s been known to greet guests, or make a special pizza baked in the inn’s outdoor wood-burning oven.

Gilmore says, “Massimo and I really want to share our love for this particular part of Italy, including the landscape and the food culture. We also want to share with guests our personal passions for contemporary art because in all the rooms you will find unique, one-of-a-kind pieces from artists from all over the world.”

She added, “We have a music room where Massimo has an extensive collection of over 7,000 jazz albums and a turntable that guests are welcome to play. We also have a fun cocktail room, with a 1950s-era sofa, where two of my favorite female artists are featured, Barbara Kruger and Annette Lemieux. We also have a lot of interesting books around the house, too, so guests can enjoy a little peek into our world.”

As you may expect, guests at the inn are well fed, as they are initially greeted with a variety of fresh-baked Italian cookies, Lambrusco (the region’s iconic wine), several pieces of local Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, and almonds and pistachios from Southern Italy.

The inn’s gourmet kitchen is open to all guests at any time of the day or night, and includes a few wine choices (as well as fresh juices and other non-alcoholic beverages) and plenty of inviting gourmet snacks beautifully presented in glass jars that include labels and descriptions.

Gilmore says, “Whenever anyone is hungry, guests just open the refrigerator and there will always be some healthy, vegetarian snacks. We offer Italian-inspired flavors, but very unexpected combinations. You may be out eating heavy food while sightseeing, but when you return here you will find some lighter options, such as artichokes with mint; ricotta with herbs; sliced, toasted bread; and a variety of delicious salads with roasted vegetables and grains. Of course, we also offer comfort foods like chocolate cake and other desserts.”

Casa Maria Luigia features an adjacent structure that houses the light and airy restaurant that offers an abundance of sweet and savory homemade delights for guests each morning. (Yes, some of the items are variations of chef Massimo’s own recipes.)

Gilmore explains, “Our kitchen team is inventing the snacks and food offerings as they go along, and we put an emphasis on grains and vegetables.” A few of the offerings guests might find in the morning include regional classics, such as homemade frittatas with sweet onions made in the wood oven; gnocco fritto, mortadella, pastries, local cheeses and robust Italian coffee.

But the evening is when the true culinary magic happens. This space transforms into the chef’s new countryside restaurant, Francescana at Maria Luigia as it features an open kitchen and communal tables with seating for 24 guests. Gilmore reveals that some of Bottura’s classic specialties will be included on the 9-course tasting menu (with wine pairings), as well as some new, inventive specialties.

Chef Bottura says, “We are so excited to open this inn and our new restaurant, as it’s a luxurious but casual trattoria and I can still improvise with the dishes we offer.”

The menu at the new restaurant is a shorter version of the tasting menu at Osteria Francescana, and it includes some of the chef’s top classics such as the Crunchy Part of the Lasagna, Caesar Salad in Bloom, Spin-painted Veal and, of course, Oops, I Dropped the Lemon Tart. Guests who reserve a room at the inn will have priority access to the restaurant at the time of booking, and advance reservations are required. (The cost of the dinner is $450 per person).

As the couple embarks on their first month as bed and breakfast proprietors, they are most looking forward to the summer and incorporating some family time into the business. In addition to the inn’s full-time staff, the couple’s son, Charlie (18) will be greeting guests and helping in the garden (Their daughter, Alexa, 22, is studying in Milan this year).

Gilmore added, “From the moment Massimo and I saw the property, we thought, ‘This house is waiting for a party.’ Now that we have opened Casa Maria Luigia, that party has begun. We are both looking forward to seeing the inn filled with guests who enjoy the music room, the house kitchen filled with snacks, the swimming pool, vegetable garden and the new dining experience Francescana at Maria Luigia.”

The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa is in the midst of the room-remodeling phase of a major multiyear, propertywide overhaul.

The public areas, including the lobby and event spaces, were redone in a $22 million project that was unveiled in February 2016. Work is underway on the Kealohilani Tower, with all 655 rooms expected to be completed by the end of summer. 

Next, work will begin on the 655 Paoakalani Tower accommodations, and the whole project is expected to be completed before the December holiday season. 

“This is a complete transformation of the guestrooms,” said general manager Thomas Foti, who came onboard in March. “This is not a renovation or refresh. The rooms will look nothing like what they looked like before.”

The remodeled rooms were designed by Creative Resource Associates’ Bianca Yih, who was inspired by the Waikiki Beach Boys, the resort area’s ambassadors who greet visitors and share their knowledge of the Islands and ocean sports. 

“The Beach Boys of Waikiki were welcoming,” Foti said. “They teach you how to surf, how to paddle an outrigger, maybe share stories about [Hawaiian surfing legend] Duke Kahanamoku. It was informal but a big part of the tourist experience back in the day. They’d take you in and immediately make you feel comfortable.”

From the entryways to the bathrooms, everything has been redone. Large closets have been installed by the door, and a coffee and tea station has been added. There are painted wood panels throughout the guestrooms. The walls are painted in soft tones, and there is a three-dimensional art piece over the beds representing a coral reef. 

“With the rooms, we wanted to impart a sense of place that didn’t exist previously,” Foti said. “With Waikiki, you want to know you’re at the beach, you want to know you’re at the ocean. We wanted it to feel like a bedroom in a residence on the beach more than a hotel room at the beach.”

There will be 55-inch TVs in the rooms, each of which has a balcony. Rooms with king beds will include glass-enclosed showers, and all of the bathrooms are being redone with new vanities and improved lighting. 

“We’ve added a few things to give more of a sense of a residence and spaciousness,” Foti said. “It’s a fresh, vibrant color palette that reflects being at the beach, the ocean. We have a lot more electrical outlets and functionality with personal technology, so there is everything you would need for a leisure trip or to stay productive on a business trip. We’ve tried to be sensitive to all types of travelers with the new design.”

When the overhaul is complete, Marriott will have invested roughly $100 million in the property, Foti said. 

“This is all part of a reinvestment in the property that started with the renovations of the lobby and meeting spaces. There is more to come after the room updates, but we aren’t quite ready to talk about it yet,” he added.

In 2016, the resort unveiled the redesigned Nanea Lobby with a carved-wood piece by Hawaiian artist Kaiwi Yoon and remodeled event spaces, including the Kona Moku Ballroom with its glass-blown chandelier and a lanai overlooking a new water feature. The Marriott also opened the Kuhio Beach Grill, a bourbon bar featuring a prime rib buffet, in early 2017. 

“Marriott Waikiki Beach has been a significant property on the Waikiki skyline for many years,” Foti said of the resort, which was built in 1968. “It sits directly across from the beach in a great location, and we will just be looking to flesh things out and build on what we have. We are looking at additional culture activities and augmenting services. We are reinvesting in new training, new uniforming and programming that didn’t exist before to deliver that true resort experience.”

Over 700 feet of garland is wrapped around the property’s striking pillars and red and white poinsettias adorn the many flower beds. These charming towns are even cozier when it snows.

If you are lucky enough to visit Barcelona, Spain, during a city-wide festival, staying at a luxury hotel overlooking the Catalan capitol’s main square, Placa de Catalunya, is certainly an unparalleled spot for viewing (and easily accessing) the celebrations.

I was in town for the largest event of the year, Festes de la Merce, which honors the city’s patron saint, the Virgin de la Merce. With festivities and parades over the weekend, Iberostar Paseo de Gracia was a prime home base.

Sophisticated and stately, the property has a lot to celebrate on its own, as it is the brand’s first hotel in Barcelona. Opened in early 2018, this newly refurbished historical landmark was constructed more than 70 years ago, before leading other lives as a hotel and a bank. It features a neoclassical facade, created with local stone, while the building’s tower showcases neobaroque design and sculptures by artist Frederic Mares.

Located in the affluent Paseo de Gracia neighborhood, the hotel is ideally situated for tourists, as it’s a short walk to many of the city’s main attractions, such as Antoni Gaudi’s famous Casa Batllo, the Gothic Quarter, the city’s Las Ramblas and a variety of buzzing restaurants. There are shopping options galore, with a massive department store, a supermarket and plenty of boutiques just steps away.

The lobby of Iberostar Paseo de Gracia is airy and white, offering an immediate (and air-conditioned) tranquil oasis from the city’s bustle just outside. The hotel’s 119 rooms — including some with terraces in addition to two large duplex suites — are spacious and light-filled, with soaring double-paned windows (that unlock and open), an abundance of mirrored walls and a light-hued palette with pastel accents and dramatic splashes of color.

Furnishings are minimal, with blonde-wood tones and streamlined closets that blend seamlessly into the walls. The in-room artwork consists of grey-and-pastel murals created by the brand’s design team, depicting landscapes with flowers interspersed with an artistic version of lizards (considered a tribute to Gaudi’s legendary tiled “dragon” sculpture in Park Guell).

My standard guestroom’s floorplan was completely open — including the bathroom — so privacy was at a minimum, although the shower and toilet areas were each separated by a door. In-room amenities included a large, mirrored flat-screen television, a minibar, a safe, a desk, an iron, convenient power outlets, a makeup mirror and a hair dryer. To my delight, the room even included a straightening iron — a blessing for those, like myself, who have hair that does not react well to humidity.

Guests will immediately notice the large bottles of refillable toiletries in the room. They are a component of the company-wide, environmentally focused program called “Wave of Change.” Starting with Spain, Iberostar Hotels & Resorts pledges to eliminate single-use plastics throughout its 110 hotels across the globe in the next several years.

The crown jewel of the 15-story Iberostar Paseo de Gracia, however, is the lovely, picturesque rooftop pool deck and surrounding terrace, open to the public until 11 p.m. Offering incredible 360-degree views of the city — including, of course, Gaudi’s architectural marvel, La Sagrada Familia — the terrace is relaxing and offers plenty of lounge chairs, couches and sunbeds. The infinity-style pool stretches across the majority of the rooftop, and the pool area also features the Sky Bar, which serves an array of craft cocktails and casual food options. It’s an ideal spot to enjoy the sunset or, during my visit, fireworks. 

On the first floor, the hotel’s main restaurant, Ca’s Menestral, offers a robust breakfast buffet daily with eggs, cheeses, breads and the like; additional hot items can be ordered off the menu. For lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s menu includes a variety of choices, ranging from club sandwiches to grilled fish. During my visit (and perhaps due to the festival outside), the dining room was very quiet.

The Iberostar Paseo de Gracia staff is lovely and accommodating; there was always a bellman at the entrance who greeted guests and offered to assist with luggage, which was often a necessity due to the short flight of foyer steps.

At the same time, on occasion, I found the customer service to be a bit slow. For example, I needed to request multiple times (over several days) for someone to repair my television — but then again, perhaps a TV isn’t needed when this vibrant city offers unlimited entertainment just outside.

Lake Austin Spa Resort is distinguished by its dedication to inspiring health and wellness by its waters.

Situated in the picturesque Austin, Texas, hill country and adjacent to the Balconies Canyonlands nature preserve, Lake Austin Spa Resort is a rustically elegant destination with 40 luxuriously designed guestrooms overlooking the scenic landscape. Created from limestone, the facility showcases warm accents of terra cotta and cedar, and is adorned with international artwork and textiles personally collected during the property owners’ travels. The spa features 20 state-of- the-art indoor treatment rooms, as well as an outdoor bamboo room with private shower and hot tub.

The resort integrates wellness throughout everything, with a focus on sustainability. For example, it boasts expansive organic herb and vegetable gardens that supply the spa’s Aster Café, as well as the resort’s main dining room. The light-filled second floor relaxation lounge, also known as the Blue Room, is a sophisticated and stylish sanctuary.

Guests are invited to unwind while awaiting treatments, and can enjoy flavored teas and healthy snacks as they take in the stunning lake vistas right outside the soaring windows.

In 2017, 20 new treatments were introduced to commemorate the resort’s 20th anniversary. Popular among these offerings: the Lavender Dreams Body Wrap (80 min./$225), which combines minerals and lavender for an invigorating full body exfoliation, followed by an upper body massage with lavender oil and warm healing stones; the Neroli Blossom Sensory Massage (50 min./$175; 80 min./$230), which incorporates tension release and breathing techniques with the refreshing essence of neroli; and Floating Meditation (50 min./$155), a relaxation session in which guests float on a mat while listening to a guided meditation. Water and Wellness

The property is certainly dedicated to its aquatic roots. In addition to the lake, it features three swimming pools in serene and unique settings. The heated Pool Barn lap pool is open-air along the perimeter (but covered for shade) and is used for a variety of treatments and classes. Nearby, the outdoor Palm Pool is a calm retreat, surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas. The resort’s third outdoor pool is, of course, lakeside. “Our location on the lake is a huge draw—and it helps that we are about 30 minutes from downtown Austin,” explains managing director Janis Clapoff. “A lot of people like to spend some time in the city, and then come out to the hill country for a few days to detox and recharge by the water.”

The resort’s robust daily schedule encompasses a multitude of fitness and strength-training classes, including yoga, Pilates, dance, meditation and an assortment of aquatic activities. On the lake, guests can partake in standup paddleboarding, kayaking, hydro-biking and water skiing, among others. Suffice it to say that they are never without something to participate in. There’s also a floating mattress tethered to the dock for those looking to simply relax.

In an effort to capitalize on such a privileged location, the LakeHouse Spa is dedicated to tying wellness and water together. The Ripple Effect, a recently launched program of land- and water-based offerings, is built around the idea that being in nature—and near water in particular—has a positive effect on people’s well-being. Spearheaded by fitness and activities director Cindy Present, the program reflects elements of marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols’ book, Blue Mind (Hachette Book Group, 2014), which discusses how spending time near or in the water can reduce stress and encourage overall happiness. The Ripple Effect includes activities such as the aforementioned Floating Mediation in the Pool Barn, lakeside yoga on standup paddleboards, aquatic Zumba and more.

During my stay, I was most curious about the innovative Aqua Stretch Myofascial Release (25 min./$95; 50 min./$155), a newly implemented treatment that’s already one of the spa’s most requested offerings. This one-on-one assisted stretching session conducted in the Pool Barn is a combination of a deep tissue massage and intense physical therapy. As we stood in the shallow water, aquatics specialist Monica Gutierrez guided me through a series of precise and dynamic stretching exercises. This personalized treatment involved constant communication, as Gutierrez continually checked in to see where I was experiencing pain or tightness and then focused on those specific areas. The experience was both blissful and rejuvenating, as I felt my muscles relaxing immediately and tightness quickly (and noticeably) dissipating.

Experience As an upscale setting with affluent clientele, the LakeHouse Spa is committed to keeping guests happy. As such, employee recruitment and training is paramount. “We hire people who have

the right personality and mindfulness for our team. Staff members should be calm, empathic and passionate. They must enjoy other people and being part of a goals-driven team, and they should be healthy, or motivated to get healthier so they can help others do the same,” says Clapoff. “They have to come to the table with a service-oriented nature, but I’m not necessarily looking for someone who has been in the wellness or hospitality industry—that’s something we can train for.”

Drawing about 50 percent of its clientele from locals who enjoy the spa’s day packages, Lake Austin also attracts guests from as far as New York. The resort works with travel agent partners through targeted marketing, and has recently started outreach to the West Coast.

In addition to advertising and public relations, not surprisingly, social media also plays a major role in the spa’s promotion. “It’s a normal part of life now,” notes Clapoff. “It has really helped us get the word out about the spa.” One successful program included the hashtag #LakeAustinSpa20, created to celebrate the resort’s 20th anniversary in 2017. Featuring “selfie stations” throughout the property, guests were invited to finish the sentence: “Lake Austin Spa Resort makes me feel…” They were encouraged to write their answers in chalk and post selfies with the hashtag to Instagram and Facebook. Some guests continued to use the hashtag throughout the year, sharing their favorite memories of the spa resort to generate widespread word of mouth.
