I’m a New Jersey local and I love sharing my tips about the state and interesting places to visit! The Garden State has so many fascinating historical sites to visit. As a resident, I have lived in Northern New Jersey as well as Southern New Jersey. Currently, I live in Cherry Hill now and I’ve discovered so many fantastic places to visit throughout the year.

Below are a few fun ideas you can add to your list when you’re looking for great things to do in New Jersey! And I have personally visited all of these destinations in the past few months!

The best things to do in North Jersey are closer than you think!

New Jersey, known as the Garden State, is a destination with an incredibly diverse history. Situated in the northeastern part of the United States, New Jersey’s coastline is about 130 miles long, bordering New York, Pennsylvania, the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware and the Delaware Bay.

In the early days of this state’s history, New Jersey was one of the 13 original colonies and played a major role in the Revolutionary War. This state was heavily involved in the industrial revolution and was simultaneously known for its sprawling farmlands, especially in the southern part of the state.

Today, New Jersey is a truly unique place to visit, as it’s the most densely populated state in the USA, and the landscape ranges from urban and fast-paced – to rustic, peaceful and relaxing.

The state of New Jersey is diverse and interesting — there are so many things to do in North Jersey! It’s a cool place to visit because there’s so much to choose from!

Do you want to see the most incredible view of the New York City skyline? Go to Weehawken and walk along the famous Kennedy Boulevard East! Do you wish to see the second-largest waterfall in North America? Head to Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ. Are you interested in a Victorian seaside getaway? Drive south to Cape May, at the southernmost tip of the state. Do you want to visit the most stunning views of the Delaware River? Go west — to the Delaware Water Gap where there’s an abundance of great hiking trails with scenic views.

Where is North Jersey?

Where is Northern NJ? Geographically, it’s the northern part of the state, which borders New York. Some areas of Northern NJ are considered the “New York metropolitan area” and it’s bustling — but other areas in north Jersey are home to hills and valleys with dramatic scenery. This area is vastly different from the shoreline, which is a popular vacation destination in the summer — and the pine barrens in the south which are completely different — heavily wooded, sandy, flat marshlands.

There are no definitive borders between north, central and southern NJ. In fact, New Jersey residents often disagree about the exact locations of North, Central and Southern New Jersey, as all these areas are home to a variety of small and large towns with their own vibe and personalities.

Here are the best (and most fun) historic destinations in Northern New Jersey

1. Tour Liberty Hall

This exquisite 50-room historic mansion in the town of Union, New Jersey was originally the home of William Livingston, who served as New Jersey’s first governor and was one of the “founding fathers” who signed the United States Constitution. It’s a fascinating place to visit, as there’s so much history here, including some of New Jersey’s oldest trees.

When visiting, you’ll have the opportunity to tour this grand house and see original artifacts from the Livingston family, as well as learn about life in 18th-century New Jersey. In addition to touring the mansion, you can visit (and tour) the gardens, arboretum and firehouse museum. You can certainly spend a few hours here, especially during the warmer months. 2. Visit Weehawken: the site of the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr

Years ago, I lived in this wonderful Weekhawken neighborhood, so I would walk by this spot every day — for many years! Hamilton Park is situated on the most picturesque cliff overlooking the Hudson River, with the majestic Manhattan skyline beyond. This small green space high above the river is the site of the fatal duel where Alexander Hamilton was shot by Aaron Burr in 1804.

There’s a bronze bust of Hamilton in the center of this area, along with several memorial plaques nearby, including the rock where he supposedly rested his head after being wounded. There are benches and pathways through the park where you can relax and take in all the history that happened here, and a long paved sidewalk where you can stroll north or south while admiring the skyline and the views. You’ll see a lot of activity here — locals exercising, tourists strolling and even bridal parties getting photographed against the Manhattan skyline on weekends! You can walk for quite a while along the paved pathway where you’ll see some mansions, large homes and apartment buildings facing the Manhattan skyline.

What is Weehawken near? This location is close to Hoboken (and several nearby restaurants), so can definitely find a place to eat or grab a coffee after visiting.

3. Explore Morristown National Historical Park

The Morristown National Historical Park in Morristown, New Jersey preserves several sites associated with the Revolutionary War, including the Ford Mansion, where George Washington and his officers stayed during the famously harsh winter of 1779-1780. It’s also home to the Jockey Hollow Encampment, where soldiers lived during that winter.

At Morristown National Historic Park, you can visit the museum, take a guided tour, explore the library, and see reenactments (visit the website for details). Also at this park is Jockey Hollow, which features some great hiking trails, ranging from easy to more difficult.

4. Visit the town of Red Bank, NJ (and JBJ Soul Kitchen)

Red Bank is a cute, historic town is home to many great independently-owned shops, cafes and restaurants — and more! You can easily spend an afternoon here, as there are several blocks filled with things to see and do. (Plus, you are right by the water and a quick drive to the beaches)!

If you want to see a historic hotel in Red Bank, NJ, the Molly Pitcher Hotel is the place to visit. It’s situated on the Navesink River and is the site of many special events throughout the year. Named after the famous woman who played a role in assisting George Washington’s troops in the Revolutionary War, this landmark property is a favorite among locals and visitors. Generally speaking, this hotel’s heyday was in the late 1960s through the 1980s, when many celebrities would stay here — usually when they performed at the nearby Garden State Arts Center, a few miles away.

If you visit the Molly Pitcher, be sure to stay for dinner, as there’s a lovely restaurant here, with waterfront views. Or if you’re up for a quick walk, just take a leisurly stroll to the center of Red Bank for more restaurants serving up an array of cusine. Summertime is the best season to enjoy this property, as there’s a pool (and a pool bar) overlooking the river. The Molly Pitcher is also within walking distance of the center of Red Bank, home to many independently-owned shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The (former) Count Basie Theater is just a few blocks away, so the Molly Pitcher is an ideal place to stay if you’re seeing a show. And don’t miss the famous JBJ Soul Kitchen, a community-centered “pay what you can afford” non-profit restaurant / non-profit that was started by the legendary rocker, Jon Bon Jovi, nearby!

5. Visit Great Falls National Park in Paterson

Did you know that New Jersey has the second-largest waterfall in North America (after Niagara Falls)? It’s true, and you can easily see this beautiful natural sight at the Paterson Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ.

The town of Paterson, NJ was established in 1792 around this gorgeous waterfall, and it was the first planned industrial city in the United States.

It’s fun to experience this amazing waterfall and park, as it’s tucked away in an urban area of northern New Jersey, yet it’s close to everything. There’s a fairly large parking lot, and plenty of places to take in some inspiring views and take some superb photographs. Visitors can walk around the park and cross the river to the other side. This area features some relatively flat walking trails, lovely cherry and dogwood trees that bloom in the springtime.

When we visited, a very helpful park ranger was there to answer questions and offer some intriguing facts about the waterfall. He was also there to offer some safety tips about viewing the waterfall safely. This park is a work in progress and expansion plans are in the works for 2024.

6. Pick flowers at Holland Ridge Farms

Springtime is the ideal season to visit the stunningly colorful tulip fields at Holland Ridge Farms in Cream Ridge, New Jersey. Although this may be considered “central” Jersey, this rural destination is a great road trip from anywhere in the state. This family-friendly farm features spots for selfies amidst the blooms, a small farm museum, and food trucks (on weekends and certain dates) so you can take a break from wandering and have a snack!

It’s hard to resist picking every tulip you see, but that’s okay. You can purchase whatever you pick, and the farm provides buckets to hold your flowers as you wander through the fields.

Advance tickets are (usually) required and to avoid crowds, it’s best if you visit during the week. However, I visited on a weekend in the spring — and we had a fantastic visit and purchased several bouquets of brightly-colored tulips. Find more info at Holland Ridge Farms.

7. Learn about history at Princeton Battlefield State Park

This tranquil park in Princeton, NJ preserves the site of a Revolutionary War battle that took place here in 1777. As you walk through this sprawling leafy destination, visitors can see monuments and markers that commemorate the battle, and learn about the events that led up to it — as well as the impact it had on the war. Princeton Battlefield State Park is a place where you can spend an entire day if the weather if nice, so check out their official website with details about how to visit.

You’re also close to Princeton University, so there’s plenty to see and do nearby!

8. Explore Thomas Edison National Historical Park

The Thomas Edison National Historic park in West Orange is dedicated to the life and work of Thomas Edison, one of America’s most famous inventors. Visitors can tour the laboratory where he developed many of his inventions, including the light bulb, photograph player camera equipment and many others.

Thomas Edison’s laboratory is a must-visit destination for those visiting Northern New Jersey. It’s filled with fascinating exhibits and displays, and you can spend several hours here walking through several buildings that were formerly used as his office, photo lab, workshop and other entrepreneurial purposes.

This is also a great rainy day experience because most of this attraction is indoors and it’s easy to visit in the rain. However, there is no air conditioning in most of these buildings so be careful about visiting during the hot summer months. Visit the park’s website for more information about planning your visit.

9. Tour Glenmont, Thomas Edison’s stunning estate

Nearby, Thomas Edison’s exquisite, stunning home is a must-visit destination for those visiting Northern New Jersey. It’s a very quick drive from the Thomas Edison National Historic Park (laboratory) entrance and situated in a beautiful, expansive park. You must arrange tours of this estate in advance, and tickets are released and purchased via the website only. The tours are small groups, and you may need to book a month or so in advance.

Note: You must get a pass from the National Park down the street before you are allowed to enter the park, which has a gate in the front. Be sure to visit this website in advance for instructions.

10. Visit Ocean Grove, NJ and see the famous “tent community”

The lovely town of Ocean Grove, New Jersey is certainly one of the unique beachfront destinations on the Jersey shore. From May through Labor Day every year, over a hundred bungalow-style tents are erected and occupied by families and people of all ages who love the shore. These tented cottages are about 600 square feet, have a canvas roof and are connected to a small wooden structure. The tent community is adjacent to the “Camp Meeting Association,” which rents out the tents for $8,000 per year for the season, and there’s a very long waiting list (for decades) and not surprisingly, a multi-step application process.

The tents are located just a few blocks from the center of town and a few blocks from the beach as well.

If you choose to walk through this area, be respectful of the residents, as pets are not allowed and they have strict “no noise” policy in the evenings.

11. Stroll around the historic town of Rutherford, NJ

Just outside of New York City (and a quick drive from the former “Meadowlands”), this cute and lively town is walkable — and home to many great independently-owned shops, including clothing boutiques, a vinyl record store and a music store, breakfast cafes and a multitude of great restaurants, fun bars — and more! Don’t miss the wonderfully delicious bagels at the Bagel Exchange in the center of town. You can easily spend an afternoon here, as there are several blocks filled with local businesses of all kinds.

It’s a great home base if you’re planning to see a game at MetLife Stadium or a concert at the nearby arena.

12. Go back in time at the Old Barracks museum in Trenton, NJ

The Old Barracks Museum, located in Trenton, New Jersey, stands as a remarkable testament to America’s rich history and its struggle for independence. Built in 1758 during the French and Indian War, the Barracks served as a military garrison and later played a pivotal role in the American Revolution.

A visit to the Old Barracks is a journey through time, an opportunity to honor the past and gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s history. This location witnessed significant events, including the Battle of Trenton in 1776, when General George Washington and his troops famously crossed the icy Delaware River to launch a surprise attack on Hessian mercenaries. 13. Tour the Wick House in Jockey Hollow

16. Visit the Proprietary House

History buffs — especially those who are interested in Benjamin Franklin — will enjoy visiting The Proprietary House, a grand mansion in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. It was the home of the last colonial governor of New Jersey, William Franklin, who was Ben Franklin’s son. Visitors who tour the house will see original artifacts from the Franklin family, as well as learn about life in 18th-century New Jersey.

When you fly, you might find that the in-air temperature has been very cold during most of the flight. As most airlines don’t have blankets available (even in business class) it’s best to bring your own. I learned this the hard way…I had to borrow a blanket from a very kind passenger sitting next to me last summer. (And yes, I was already wearing my hoodie and socks – see below)!

Needless to say, the first thing I did when I got home was to purchase a travel blanket for myself.

Personally, I have several pairs of these awesome sneakers. They are great for travel because they are perfect for everything — and easily go from the city to the beach.

Best hoodie for travel

I always wear a hoodie when I travel, and especially on my flights. It keeps me warm, and has pockets for all those small items that you need on a flight.

Be sure your hoodie has inside and outside pockets. Inside pockets make it so convenient to hold your phone, wallet, passport, ear phones or ear buds, water bottle, lip balm and anything else that you need easy access on the plane. (This is so much easier than rummaging through that bag under your seat, or having to take your other bag out of the overhead bin).

I’m a fan of the Scott eVest hoodie (available for men and women) — because it features 18 hidden pockets — and doubles as a casual light jacket that you can wear during your trip!

Lightweight, compact Binoculars

I’m always thankful when I bring my small, lightweight, powerful binoculars on a trip! They are extremely valuable when hiking, on the beach, or just admiring the views from your hotel window or balcony.

My favorite binoculars are Nikon (especially compact sizes), as they are tiny and easy to travel with. They are lightweight, compact and can fit in the smallest of bags. You can toss them in your beach bag, day pack or carry-on bag, too. These weigh practically nothing.

On your next trip, pack a small pair of binoculars and you’ll be glad you did!

If you’re like me, you probably have a collection of water bottles at home of all shapes and sizes. Put Hydro Flask at the top of the list! Compression socks for long flights

Yes, you need compression socks on long flights!

You may have read about the importance of compression socks, but if not, check out this article about the health benefits of compression socks on Web MD. I’ve learned the best thing to do is wear regular socks to the airport and keep your compression socks in your carry-on.

There are many brands of compression socks — this brand offers a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Extra hint: Don’t wait until you’ve already boarded and in your seat to put on your compression socks, because space is limited on the plane and the socks are very (and necessarily) tight. So, it’s not easy to maneuver when you’re in your seat and space is limited.

Packing cubes to keep you organized

Many gift guides mention the value of packing cubes – for good reason. In my opinion, these zippered cubes really are the best travel companions and are so helpful in keeping your items organized while traveling.

Packing cubes are available in different colors, sizes, and thickness. You can choose from a variety of styles, too. For example, if you need to fit in as much stuff as possible in your suitcase, “compression” bags can be especially helpful.

Personally, I like using cubes of different colors and sizes to organize my items, as that makes it easy to identify what’s inside.

Most of all, I really prefer the packing cubes with a mesh front, so you can see the contents. (OR, if you’d rather try compression bags, click here and try this option from Bagsmart).

Baggallini travel bags  

I’ve been a fan of this company for a very long time and own several different types and styles of bags. These modern, stylish, and functional bags are all you need for travel. Originally designed by flight attendants, Baggallini offers a wide variety of bags, including crossbody, backpacks, mini bags, satchels and more. One of my favorites is the Baggallini Everywhere Bagg. It’s the perfect bag for travel and available in so many colors.

Cincha travel belt for your luggage

This new product is a clever travel belt that you wrap around your luggage. It has been very helpful to me in recent months, especially when flying and I need to navigate through airports and / or walk long distances with my roller suitcase. And these travel belts can help you, too, if you give them a try!

Cincha is simple and easy — it allows you to ‘add’ a bag to your roller luggage securely, and it will save you from juggling too many bags.

Cincha travel belt is essentially a cool belt that easily and tightly slips over the handle of your roller suitcase and clips around your smaller tote bag or backpack. It’s available in a selection of colors and sizes and they just offered a newer version with a small bag attached to the belt.

Rimowa: Gorgeous, upscale luggage

Everyone has their own luggage preference, and I happen to be a Rimowa fan. I’ve taken my bag around the world more than once! The quality of Rimowa is outstanding, and the bag is incredibly durable.

All of their bags are solidly made, and you’ll even notice how sturdy and smooth the wheels are when you roll it through the airport or along the street. I’ve been using my Rimowa bag for so long that it’s now been discontinued, but if you’re looking to invest in top quality luggage, you can splurge on this beautiful Rimowa bag (but this brand has many cool options to choose from)!

As a travel writer, I use several different bags, so if you prefer a brand that’s more budget-friendly, try the Samsonite brand, as I also found this one to be very reliable and well-made.  

Kizik shoes (yes, they are totally hands-free!)

One way to make traveling easier is to wear the right clothing when you’re flying. And when you’re traveling, the best shoes are the easiest and the most stress-free! I recommend the Kizik eco-knit slip-on sneaker because it makes going through airport security just a little easier!

Kizik shoes look like regular sneakers, but you don’t have to lace them up or even bend down to put them on. It’s true. You can take these shoes on an off without bending over or using your hands. And that’s a big plus when you’re jugging multiple bags and dealing with TSA.

I often get asked about my favorite travel hacks. Believe it or not, my favorite, low-cost item to share is a simple black sheet. I use it all the time, especially for road trips. You just throw it over all your items in the back seat of your car or SUV and watch them disappear!

The “black sheet” is a budget-friendly trick that works for your home or apartment while you are away. If you have items visible from the window, toss the sheet on top. This also works for hotel rooms. You can just cover your suitcases to keep your stuff “out of sight.” It’s an easy fix, it’s light and works surprisingly well! A truly life-changing product!

23 Best Places to Stay in Waikiki, Hawaii

I have personally stayed in many hotels across the Hawaiian islands, and I genuinely appreciate Hawaii and love learning about the culture and the history of the people who live there. As a travel writer, I often write about Hawaii for USA Today and other websites and outlets, and I’ve also contributed to several Hawaii guidebooks (for the islands of Oahu and Kauai).

When you visit Hawaii, you definitely want to stay at a hotel on the beach (or very close to) the beach. The good news is that Waikiki is home to many beachfront hotels that face the Pacific Ocean, so you’re always steps from the sand. And of course, these hotels and resorts offer tremendous views of those world-famous Waikiki waves and Diamond Head state monument.

I highly recommend these resorts below — and be sure to read my “Pro Tips” after each hotel description!

1. Hilton Hawaiian Village

The Hilton Hawaiian Village has everything you could want for a vacation. This sprawling resort (HHV for short) has multiple high-rise towers, five swimming pools, tropical gardens, a number of restaurants and cafes (at all price points) and even a luau on the property. It is on the beach, and it also has a private lagoon with beach chairs and toys available.

You’ll see many shops here selling gifts, beach gear, art, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. You will not need to go far to find just about anything!

Although this is a massive resort, and it’s good for families, for couples especially, I recommend staying at the Al’i tower, because it has a separate front desk and lobby for check-in, which was way less crowded than the “main” check-in area and offers more personalized service. I’ve recently stayed at this tower and was thrilled to learn it also has its own swimming pool (not crowded — ever), a pool bar for drinks (with a TV if you want to watch the big game), and light bites with views of the beach. Ask for a room with a lanai facing the ocean so you can enjoy beautiful sunsets (and spectacular fireworks on Friday nights)!

Pro Tip: Hilton Hawaiian Village is large and can feel very busy at times. But overall, with all the amenities and conveniences, it’s a great choice for Waikiki.

2. Halekulani

Halekulani On the Beach at Waikiki is a posh upscale resort — a five-star oasis from the moment you enter the hotel. The Halekulani is tranquil with minimalist, classic décor throughout. Their legendary restaurant, House Without A Key, has just been renovated in 2022, and features a new menu and Hawaiian music every night at sunset. The other onsite dining experiences, Orchids and the award-winning La Mer, are not to be missed, as the executive chef from Italy oversees the exceptional menus throughout the hotel. Their swimming pool area is a peaceful retreat and features a beautiful mosaic-tiled cattleya orchid at the bottom of the pool — made from over a million tiles!

Guest rooms at the Halekulani Waikiki have been recently refurbished and feature modern amenities within a classic setting. I’ve stayed here a number of times and love the oceanfront rooms facing the beach for spectacular views, day and night! For a nightcap, sip a cocktail while enjoying live jazz music at Lewers Lounge, tucked away in the back of the property.

Pro tip: For a less extravagant, yet still exclusive, top-notch experience, stay at the Halepuna hotel across the street. It’s the sister property to the Halekulani and opened just a few years ago.

3. Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani

Across the narrow street from the Halekulani hotel is the Halepuna – the Halekulani’s sister property that may not be beachfront, but it offers the same upscale service and some of the fabulous amenities. The Halepuna also has a unique art collection throughout the lobby and in some public spaces. The Halepuna’s rooftop infinity pool is lovely, with a jacuzzi, plenty of lounge chairs, views of the ocean, and a full bar so you can sip on those tropical hand-crafted cocktails while sunbathing.

Rooms are new, modern and bright, with small lanai. The upper floors have views of the beach! The Halepuna has a new restaurant, the Halekulani Bakery that just re-opened in December 2022, and it features a robust selection of fresh baked goods and a small dining menu as well.

Pro tip: Guests who stay at the Halepuna can sign for their food and beverages at the Halekulani, just a few steps away.

4. Prince Waikiki Resort

Overlooking the marina, the Prince Hotel offers guests an incredible view all day, and especially at sunset. Guestrooms are spacious and modern with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the water. Away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, about a 15 minute walk to everything, the Prince hotel is situated near the Ala Moana Center, Ala Moana Beach Park and the trendy Kaka’ako neighborhood. The hotel offers two great restaurants, 1000 Sails and Katsumidori Sushi Tokyo, as well as a large lobby with a coffee shop and several stores. The pool is a great spot to relax, with a bar and an abundance of lounge chairs and cabanas.

Pro Tip: Opt to stay in a Prince Club Room with access to the (very cool) lounge – it’s indoor-outdoor and offers breakfast, and food options throughout the day, including dinner.

5. Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort

Often called the “Pink palace of the Pacific,” the Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, is the second-oldest hotel in Hawaii and known for its elegance, beauty and history. Opened in 1927, it’s situated in the center of Waikiki, with many fabulous rooms with lanai that face the beach. This resort is home to the world-famous beachfront Mai Tai bar, considered the best spot in Waikiki for a cocktail at sunset, and the Azure restaurant offers exceptional cuisine and lovely tables that are steps from the sand. For a great breakfast, the Surf Lanai opens early. The Royal Hawaiian center is steps away and offers a fabulous selection of shops, many showcasing locally-made Hawaiian products and small islander-owned businesses.

6. Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort and Spa

Built in 1901, the gorgeous and stately Moana Surfrider is the oldest hotel in Hawaii and known as the “First Lady of Waikiki.” Just off the sand, the lovely courtyard outside is home to the restaurant, the Beachhouse, and it’s a fantastic spot for a cocktail or dinner. You can also enjoy afternoon tea here on the weekends. Don’t be surprised to see a bride and groom or two as you walk through the lobby, as it’s a favorite spot for elegant beachfront weddings.  

Rooms and suites at this hotel are a variety of sizes, and the pool is a few steps from the ocean. And be sure to sign up for the free historical tour when you arrive – it’s not to be missed!

Pro Tip: Enjoy a break sitting in the white rocking chairs on the front porch of the Moana Surfrider resort and people-watch, and be sure to have a drink or snack under the beautiful banyan tree in the courtyard.

7. Sheraton Waikiki

For panoramic views of Waikiki beach and Diamond Head monument, you can’t beat the Sheraton Waikiki. This hotel was recently renovated in 2021 and all the rooms have been redesigned and updated – so everything feels brand new. This hotel is massive, with lots of shopping and a convenience store right in the lobby. Although it feels busy, but you can find several places to sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful oceanfront vistas.

Families love the Sheraton Waikiki especially because of the sprawling main pool deck that features a water slide, and adults flock to the infinity pool, the only one overlooking the beach in Waikiki. When you’re ready to eat, you have plenty of choices here – including the outdoor Edge of Waikiki for lunch and the stylish RumFire for dinner.

Pro Tip: Choose an oceanfront room facing Diamond Head for the best views!

8. Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach

Featuring its famous pointed A-frame entrance that welcomes guests into the open-air lobby, the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach has been a unique landmark on Waikiki beach since the 1950s. It’s been recently renovated in 2021 so the rooms are all new inside — spacious and contemporary, many with lanai overlooking the ocean. The décor is neutral with splashes of seafoam green. The main lobby is spacious, with plenty of seating, and a well-known restaurant, Kani Ka Pila Grille is very popular and features casual cuisine and nightly Hawaiian music.

Pro tip: A new restaurant is scheduled to open here very soon – right on the beach with amazing views of Waikiki and Diamond Head!

9. Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort

Not to be confused with the Outrigger Reef hotel (see description above), the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort is in the middle of Waikiki. So if you want to be in the center of it all — choose the Outrigger Hotel, as it’s perched on the beach and just next door to the beautiful and historic Royal Hawaiian resort.

The rooms are various sizes and many have ocean views with a lanai. The Outrigger also has a small exhibit area of legendary surf memorabilia just off the lobby. It’s also home to the famous Dukes bar and restaurant, which you won’t want to miss. It’s often busy, and they have live music frequently. If you’re lucky, you can score a seat at the bar, and order food from there.

Pro Tip: The Outrigger has a great, airy lounge located just above the beach level, for club-level guests that offers plenty of unobstructed ocean views and excellent food for breakfast and dinner.

10. Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach

Just a few steps from the beach with awesome views and amenities, the Alohilani greets guests with its jaw-dropping, two-story floor-to-ceiling aquarium in the center of the lobby. This hotel was recently refurbished and feels very modern and new, and the rooms have contemporary decor and lanai — many with ocean views.

Their expansive swimming pool deck is spacious, with an abundance of lounge chairs and cabanas (and ocean views, too)! For food lovers, two Morimoto restaurants are located in this hotel, and since this hotel is so centrally-located, many other restaurants are nearby. The Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach is across the street from the world-famous Kuhio beach and the Duke Kahanamoku statue, and it’s an easy walk to just about everything in Waikiki.

Pro Tip: The Alohilani has an awesome indoor-outdoor and spacious club, the Longboard lounge, so ask for access to this when you arrive!

11. Queen Kapiolani hotel Waikiki Beach

Located close to the zoo and aquarium, the Queen Kapiolani hotel is situated on a quiet end of Waikiki. It features an expansive lobby with splashes of bright colors and tropical-inspired murals. This mid-century modern landmark offers amazing views of Diamond Head State Monument, and rooms with a variety of layouts and sizes (some have lanai and kitchenettes), so be sure to ask for a room that overlooks this stunning landmark.

The Queen Kapiolani is also home to several shops and cafes in the lobby, a large workout facility, and the Deck Bar and Grill, a fun, lively outdoor restaurant that’s popular with locals and visitors alike, and frequently features live music. It also offers stellar views of Diamond Head, too, so you can enjoy this magnificant vista as you relax by the pool!

12. Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger

The Beachcomber by Outrigger is in the center of Waikiki, just across the street from the Royal Hawaiian Center and next door to the city’s busy International Marketplace. This high-rise features almost five hundred rooms of different sizes, many with beach views. There’s a fun pool right off the main lobby with plenty of seating, and steps away is the famous Maui Brewing, an ideal indoor-outdoor spot for lunch or dinner, with a casual menu and live music here often. If you’re seeking a fun hotel in middle of everything, this is the spot for you!

Pro Tip: This hotel has a fun, lively coffee shop with delicious food at the top of the escalators in the main lobby. It’s called Hawaii Aroma Café.

13. Ritz Carlton Waikiki

The Ritz Carlton Waikiki is luxury at its finest. Although this property is a few blocks away from the beach, they make up for it in many ways. The rooms and suites vary in size, and some have multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as gourmet kitchens with luxury appliances – including a washer and dryer. The stunning swimming pool area features several pools – all facing the ocean so and you can see all the way to the waves.  There are no buildings in front of this hotel, so you have an unobstructed beach view!

The Ritz Carlton Waikiki also features several excellent restaurants – all with indoor-outdoor seating.

Pro Tip: The Ritz Carlton Waikiki also offer guests free chairs and towels for the beach at the valet area – an excellent perk so you don’t need to bring your own!

14. Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa

Across the street from Waikiki Beach and in the center of the action, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa is a great choice for a place to stay. It’s just across the street from the famous “Duke” statue, which is Kuhio beach, and the busiest in Waikiki.

It’s also located on a historical spot — exactly where Queen Lili‘uokalani’s summer home was located many years ago.

This hotel is massive and luxurious with a number of differently configured suites and rooms (most with balconies – lanai). Sizes and views vary, so be sure to ask questions. There’s a huge, new pool deck, spa and plenty of shopping at this hotel. Depending on where your room is located, it can be a bit of a walk to the beach, even though it’s technically across the street!

Pro Tip: The rooftop pool at the Marriott Waikiki Beach has just been renovated and features a sprawling sun deck, ocean views, cabanas, kids’ splash pad — and a great outdoor restaurant, Queensbreak. The restaurant is located in the back of the pool deck and features live music and excellent food day and night. 15. Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort

With over 1,000 rooms and suites, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort is a landmark destination just steps away from the main beach in Waikiki, Kuhio.

Every room at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort has a lanai, which is an excellent perk! The rooms and suites have been newly redesigned and are modern with minimalist decor. It’s important to note that there are many sizes, configurations and views, so be sure to do your research before booking. Of course, Ocean View is always best, but this property has plenty of beautiful view options.

Pro Tip: This hotel has several in-house restaurants, including SHOR and SWIM (beach bar), but you can walk to many others.

16. Twin Fin Waikiki

The Twin Fin Waikiki is an oceanfront destination and formerly named the Aston Waikiki Beach hotel. This new property re-opened in early 2023 after a major renovation.

Everything is brand new in all the rooms — the design, furniture and amenities. This hotel has a Waikiki surf theme and is situated just across the street from the beach, so it’s a very easy walk to the waves. There’s also shops, restaurants and activities steps away. The rooms are perfectly sized for couples and families, as they offer one, two and three-bedroom options. Be sure to ask about availability.

Pro Tip: Twin Fin Waikiki is home to the famous Tiki’s Bar and Grill, a fun Waikiki restaurant with a menu that has “something for everyone.” It’s indoor-outdoor and overlooks the beach with great views — especially at sunset! There’s live music here on most nights, and it gets crowded on weekends.

It’s essential to know that, as the name states, all rooms here are suites with kitchenettes, so you’re getting a larger space no matter which room size you choose. Of course, prices vary, depending on the views and sizes of the actual suites.

Extra perks here include a gorgeous pool deck, free (hot) breakfast, and laundry facilities for guests (a big plus)! There’s also tons of restaurants, bars, and shops just outside the door.

18. Espacio: The Jewel of Waikiki

For an ultra-luxurious experience, look no further than the Espacaio: The Jewel of Waikiki. I have personally toured this property and it’s certainly a memorable and exceptional place to stay. This is an extremely high-end, customized experience in a luxury hotel setting. This hotel is fairly new (built about three years ago) and has only nine super-premium suites. There are modern, multi-room apartments that feel brand new and feature several bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and a massive lanai with jaw-dropping ocean views.

These sprawling apartment-style suites feel more like homes and are ideal for families who desire luxury — all the way. Everything is customized from start to finish, ensuring your visit in Hawaii is truly a one-of-a-kind and luxurious experience.

If you stay here, you’ll want to dine at the incredible Mugen restaurant! It’s a small restaurant and reservations are required. (I dined here when it first opened and it’s truly an experience)!

19. Shoreline Hotel Waikiki

Colorful and playful, the Shoreline Hotel in Waikiki is made for a fun and carefree Hawaiian vacation!

The Shoreline Hotel Waikiki is definitely a walk from the beach, but it has a lot to offer for visitors. From the moment you step into the lobby, you feel like you’re on vacation. The colorful rooms and suites are modern and splashy, the rooftop pool feels like a private oasis (with great city views), and there’s free coffee and sparkling water for guests in the lobby. It’s a small hotel, so you won’t be dealing with large lobbies and big crowds.

You’re also in the middle of the action with plenty of shopping, bars, and restaurants just outside the front door.

Pro Tip: Check out the amenities here, as they offer guests credit to the adjacent restaurant.

20. Coconut Waikiki Hotel

Located on the Ala Wai canal in Waikiki and several blocks away from the beach, the Coconut Waikiki Hotel is a quiet destination that’s a great budget-friendly choice. This hotel is especially good for families as the rooms are spacious and available in large suites and “double-doubles.”

This hotel has a heated swimming pool, beach towels, and barbecue grills for guests (and an outdoor patio for dining).

Pro Tip: This hotel has underground parking (for an additional fee). It’s not always easy to park in Waikiki, so this is a big plus!

21. Wayfinder Hotel

The Wayfinder Hotel in Waikiki is a new smaller property that’s situated several blocks away from the beach and located on the Ala Wai canal. This means that it’s several minutes’ walk to the world-famous Waikiki Beach and ideal for guests who are seeking a budget-friendly option at a new hotel.

This modern, newly-updated hotel has spacious, hip, yet basic rooms in different size options featuring a private lanai. The heated swimming pool area is a great place to hang out and enjoy some tropical cocktails in the afternoon or evening. The Wayfinder is also within walking distance to shops, bars, and plenty of restaurants. And if you’re into “brutalist” architecture, you’re in luck, as this hotel is one of the many Honolulu buildings featuring this very recognizable design. Note: Some guests say this hotel is still working out the kinks, so be sure to read the recent reviews before booking.

Pro Tip: This hotel also offers beach chairs and free beach towels.

22. Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach

The Hyatt Centric Waikiki is one of the newer, upscale, high-rise hotels in Waikiki that opened in 2020. This hotel has over 230 rooms and suites — and they are all are spacious and light-filled, with modern furnishings and amenities.

It’s a few minutes’ walk to the beach, but still centrally located in the heart of Waikiki (and there’s a Starbucks in the lobby) and it’s right in the middle of everything. The lovely, expansive lobby is on an upper floor with the hotel’s pool adjacent to it with great city and ocean views.

Pro Tip: Rooms don’t have outdoor lanai, but they DO have very large windows and awesome views. And this hotel is pet friendly!

23. Hotel Renew

This boutique, under-the-radar hotel is all about relaxation and finding your zen. It offers a quiet getaway a few steps from the beach.

I’ve stayed at this hidden gem on a solo trip, and it was a great experience. It feels like a safe, private residence — and the front desk staff is very helpful. The lobby is tiny, with a small coffee bar in the morning and cocktails in the evening, but it’s not a big gathering spot, so you won’t find crowds here or groups hanging out. The entrance is bit subdued, too — you may walk past this hotel and not even realize it’s there!

Rooms are comfortable and cozy with sleek, minimalist decor and upgraded bathrooms. This hotel also offers free beach towels and is pet friendly, too.

Pro Tip: Hotel Renew does not have a pool, but if you’re a beach person, that really doesn’t matter, as you’re super-close to the waves!

For starters, Oahu is an island. The island of Oahu is home to over one million people and about 400,000 of them live in the city of Honolulu, which is the state capital of Hawaii. Oahu is, by far, the busiest of the Hawaiian islands.

Waikiki is located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It’s a famous neighborhood in Honolulu, situated along Oahu’s southern shore and its world-famous beaches. You can see the majestic Diamond Head state monument from just about anywhere along Waikiki beach. Home to many high-rise hotels and resorts of all sizes, Waikiki is a central place to stay if you’re planning a vacation to Hawaii and want to experience Oahu.

Waikiki is also a busy place, as Honolulu has lots of tall buildings, businesses, restaurants, stores — and traffic. This means you have a wide selection of activities, cafes (from quick bites to upscale dining experiences), and sights to enjoy. Overall, Waikiki is a great place to visit in Hawaii if you love the beach, but also like to be close to casual and fine-dining restaurants, attractions, and nightlife. It’s also an excellent place to be if you don’t want to drive on your vacation.

What part of Waikiki is best? Anywhere on or near the beach in Waikiki is considered best. Waikiki is legendary for its gorgeous sandy beaches and turquoise ocean against the backdrop of the famous Diamond Head State Monument. It’s known for the best surf breaks in the world, with warm water, great weather year-round, and long, rolling waves.

Visitors don’t need to leave the beach to enjoy some fantastic activities. You can take surf lessons right on the beach from a Waikiki Beachboy (at multiple places), enjoy a traditional outrigger canoe ride, and take a cruise on a catamaran where you may spot turtles and other wildlife. Beachgoers can also rent a paddleboard (SUP), go snorkeling or take a dip in the aquamarine ocean.

Is Waikiki walkable?

Is Waikiki a walkable area? Yes! One of the best things about Waikiki is that it’s very walkable, so you can easily explore the area by strolling along the beach (in most places).

Keep in mind that Waikiki is busy! The nearby bustling streets are filled with high-end designer shops, restaurants, smaller boutiques and markets. If you do need a ride somewhere while you’re in Waikiki, there’s very easy access to taxis, rideshares, buses, and shuttles.

Can I stay in Waikiki without a car?

Can I stay in Waikiki without a car? Yes, absolutely! You do not need a car in Waikiki and in fact, I’ve stayed there many times myself without a car.

Do you need a car in Waikiki? Here’s how to figure that out: You don’t need a car if Waikiki IF you’re only staying in Waikiki for a few days OR if you have no plans or interest in seeing the rest of the island on your own. When you’re not walking, you can use a taxi, or a rideshare service, the Waikiki trolly, or take a tour of the island with a service that picks you up and drops you off from your hotel (or close by).

There are also many hotels in Waikiki that are a block or two away from the beach, and most are a very easy walk to restaurants, bars, stores and that lovely stretch of sand.

How many days do you need in Waikiki?

How many days do you need in Waikiki? Well, that depends on your travel plans and how much time you have!

If you’re a first-time visitor and want to visit Oahu as well as another Hawaiian island, I recommend spending at least three nights on Oahu to see the main attractions: Pearl Harbor (which will take up most of a full day); hike Diamond Head (several hours to hike in the morning); and visit the North Shore (a full day) or just relax and enjoy Waikiki Beach (you can swim, surf or take lessons, and/or take an outrigger canoe ride.

Many Hawaii visitors love Oahu and stay in Waikiki for their entire vacation. It’s easy because you don’t need a car in Waikiki, but you can choose to rent a car for a day or two to explore the island.

There’s really no “correct” answer to how many days do you need in Waikiki, but for a first-time visitor who is also going to another island, I personally recommend three days to see and do as much as you can!

How much is Uber from the airport to Waikiki?

How much is Uber or Lyft from the HNL airport to Waikiki? The price actually depends on which hotel you are going to, and the time of day you are arriving.

Honolulu and Waikiki have a lot of traffic, especially at rush hour. So don’t be surprised to find the highway very crowded — similar to Los Angeles or New York.

As a general rule, from the HNL airport (Daniel K. Inouye International Airport) to Waikiki, you can get an Uber or Lyft for “about” $35 for the closest hotels (these hotels include the Outrigger Reef, the Ritz Carlton, and Prince Waikiki (and that surrounding area).

There are several other options from the airport to Waikiki. You can book a shuttle in advance or at the counter at the airport. It’s great for groups and makes it very easy to get around. The downside to the shuttle is that you must wait for the driver to drop off other passengers at their hotels before you reach your hotel.

Pro tip: The rideshare services (including Uber and Lyft) are not found on the same level as baggage claim at the Honolulu airport. If you choose to take a rideshare service, you will need to pick up your bags and then take the elevator (or escalator) upstairs to the exits and wait for your driver there. The taxis and shuttles ARE located on the ground floor.

Waikiki is an excellent choice for visitors who like to be in the middle of the action, with easy access to the beach, restaurants, cafes and nightlife. You can also find a multitude of great outdoor activities nearby – just steps away from your hotel. Also, just about any tour you decide to take will pick you up in Waikiki, so there’s no need for a car!

All of the things to do below are either located in Waikiki — or Waikiki is a meeting point.

Enjoy an idyllic cruise on a catamaran right from Waikiki beach — and then jump in the ocean to snorkel! This wonderful and fun cruise to turtle canyon will bring you to the best spot in Hawaii for sighting turtles and sea life. This tour also provides an educational and fun experience along the way. Wave Woman: The life and struggles of a surfing pioneer

I was fortunate enough to meet the lovely author Vicky Heldreich Durand in person on the island of Oahu, Hawaii in early March 2020 –  just a few days before the COVID-19 shutdown occurred throughout the United States. I was in Hawaii researching the chapters I was writing for the Fodor’s Travel Guide for Oahu (see details about that guidebook here).

In retrospect, I’m so glad we had the opportunity to connect in person…She kindly gave me an autographed copy of her book, Wave Woman: The life and struggles of a surfing pioneer (Sparkpress). I started reading it on my flight home and couldn’t put it down!

Wave Woman is an intriguing biography of her mother, Betty Pembroke Heldreich, who moved to Hawaii in the 1950s when she was in her early 40s (with the author and her younger sister in tow), and quickly fell in love with surfing. After learning to surf and overcoming obstacles, she became an early female surfing pioneer, won a number of awards (including the annual Makaha International Surfing Championship) and traveled far and wide for competitions.

Although she was well known in Hawaii’s surfing circles at the time, Betty was nearly forgotten by history, until her daughter, Vicky (a talented surfer as well), decided to write this exceptional biography and share it with the world.

The book reveals many aspects of Betty’s (and Vicky’s) lives prior to their arrival in Hawaii, as well as their move to the islands and their time adjusting to (and embracing) the “aloha” lifestyle. Focusing on Betty’s effervescent spirit and optimistic attitude, the book chronicles her life, various relationships and surfing adventures. Most of all, the book is a fascinating time capsule that beautifully captures Waikiki and the Hawaiian surfing community from an earlier era — the 1950s and beyond.

Rockaway: Surfing headlong into a new life

In this captivating book, Rockaway: Surfing Headlong into a new life, New York Times reporter and author Diane Cardwell writes about her initial curiosity while watching longboarding surfers and her persistence in learning to surf as an adult. Rockaway (HMH) chronicles her move from New York City to the sleepy beach town of Rockaway, New York a few years ago to improve her skills. In an effort to live the ultimate surfing lifestyle, she purchases a small bungalow, makes new friends and does her best to surf just about every day — devoting much of her time to learning all about the ocean, tides, and catching waves.

Her story is filled with her many challenges while becoming a true “surfer” and getting to know Rockaway’s longboarding community. She openly discusses shredding the fears that come along with the ocean and surfing.

She also writes (in terrifying detail) her firsthand experience with the massive east coast hurricane, Superstorm Sandy, which left major devastation in its path to much of the local coastline in New York and New Jersey in October 2012. In its aftermath, Cardwell actively helped to rebuild the town after its devastation – and she continues to live there today. Not surprisingly, she surfs all the time!

She Surf: The rise of female surfing

Hawaii’s Kaka’ko restaurants offer a great food scene in Honolulu

Food lovers agree that Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene in Hawaii. The Kaka’ako neighborhood is busy, as a lot of new restaurants and businesses have opened in recent years. This area is very close to Honolulu’s Waikiki neighborhood, and has become a vibrant and fun place to go, day or night. You will see mostly locals here, as it’s still considered a bit off-the-beaten-track from the main touristy areas of Waikiki, yet it’s becoming more popular with visiting foodies and those who love to explore.

Kaka’ko: What you need to know

The Kaka’ako neighborhood is easy to get to from Waikiki. It’s located only a few short miles away from Waikiki (and an easy uber ride!) Everything is walkable once you get there. You can easily walk there, or it’s about a 10 or 15-minute drive from Waikiki, depending on the time of day. (Note: rush hour here is busy!)

This cool neighborhood has been transformed from an industrial area into a lively art and culinary destination over the past several years. What’s more, this urban community is now home to many high-rise apartments and condo buildings, along with independently-owned hip boutiques, eclectic shops, bars, breweries, and much more. Kaka’ako is sophisticated, yet still edgy. So there’s a lot to see and do in this exciting area!

The Kaka’ako neighborhood’s restaurants are some of Hawaii’s best

Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene across the island. The best place to start exploring this part of town is the SALT at Our Kaka’ako complex. It’s home to a number of bustling restaurants, specialty stores, coffee shops, and casual cafes. This is a list of several top dining destinations for foodies in Kaka’ako. I’ve visited this neighborhood a number of times and have personally dined at all the restaurants in this post!

Margotto Hawaii

One of the newest and most talked about restaurants in the Kaka’ako neighborhood is the fabulous and memorable Margotto Hawaii restaurant, where I had the opportunity to dine recently. This multi-award-winning restaurant’s cuisine is an unforgettable fusion of Japanese with an Italian and French flair. This exceptional food-lover’s destination features a truly unique, multi-course tasting experience where truffles are the star of the show. So, if you love truffles and are ready for an incredible dining adventure — Margotto is not to be missed!

Margotto Hawaii’s menu is filled with delights accented with a variety of rare truffles, sourced from Italy and other destinations. The delicacies here are carefully prepared by the award-winning chef duo, the Kayama brothers, who will tantalize your taste buds with incredible textures and flavors. One of our favorites (pictured below) is the cacao e pepe with homemade tagiolini with butter and cheese. Be sure to choose the wine pairing, as the wines are perfectly matched to this unforgettable menu. Margotto Hawaii is an authentic experience meant to be enjoyed and savored, so be sure to add this to your must-visit Hawaii experiences.

Moku Kitchen

Another popular Kaka’ako restaurant is Moku Kitchen, and it has a menu filled with authentic upcountry specialties. This stylish eatery has a robust menu with many favorites, including Kalua pork and pineapple hand-tossed pizza; fresh island fish tacos made with mahi-mahi; and steak with house-cut fries. Don’t skip the sides, as the Jalapeno mashed potatoes are a best-seller. The house-made desserts include strawberry cream pie and chocolate mac nut. (And this family-friendly spot has a children’s menu as well). 

Moku Kitchen has a great happy hour with food and drink specials, so be sure to check it out!

Redfish Poke Bar

Redfish Poke bar by Foodland is another Kaka’ako restaurant with an assortment of inventive Fresh poke bowls, salads, and other fresh dishes, as well as signature cocktails and more. Chef Reid Matsumura, an Oahu native, serves up a contemporary version of island classics. Several popular dishes include okonomiyaki fries, made with scallions, furikake and pickled ginger; miso shiso wings with lemon and miso glaze; and lechon kawali, pork belly with onion, soy, nuoc cham sauce and tomato. 

Highway Inn Kaka’ako

For a traditional taste of the islands, check out Highway Inn Kaka’ako, a family-run restaurant that’s been in business since the 1940s. Their signature Hawaiian-style menu features a variety of classic plates, such as their Hawaiian moco, which is pork (or chicken) lau lau with beef stew gravy, topped with an egg and lomi salmon. One specialty is the sun noodle fried yakisoba is a stir fry with locally-made noodles and spam, green onions, and a fish cake. This restaurant’s plantation mixed plate features Pulehu boneless short ribs, grilled chicken, and panko-crusted island fish that’s accompanied by a generous portion of furikaka rice.

Oahu’s Kaka’ako is the best for coffee, chocolate and hot dogs!

Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene, and the best coffee and chocolate destination, too. This hidden gem of a neighborhood has a number of unexpected options, too, such as Hanks Haute dogs, a casual spot with an array of gourmet hot dogs and creative toppings.

Kaka’ako is a great place to find some locally-made favorites to bring home, too, such as tasty specialties from the Lonohana estate chocolate shop with products made with all-natural, organic ingredients; and Morning Brew for fresh coffee, tea, pastries, and more.

Kaka’ako’s beer scene is fabulous

Kaka’ako is home to several breweries within walking distance, including Aloha Beer Company. This neighborhood hotspot attracts repeat customers with a variety of rotating handcrafted offerings on tap made with local ingredients. This brewery restaurant has a friendly ambiance and multiple indoor / outdoor spaces. There is also a big, shaded beer garden with seating for nearly 100 guests — and a “secret” speakeasy with a whimsical, rock n roll vibe. 

Hawaii’s Kaka’ako farmer’s market is one of the island’s best

Oahu’s Kaka’ako Farmers Market, is held in Ward Village every Saturday morning. This award-winning market features an abundance of fresh food products (and more) sourced from the local community. This means that it’s an ideal place to get an authentic “taste” of the islands.

You’ll find local fruits, vegetables, and homemade specialties, as well as tasty baked goods and more great food! All of these vendor stalls are owned by locals. These individuals are passionate about sharing their products and honoring native Hawaiian culture through fresh ingredients.

And if you’re up for more shopping, you’re in luck! Ward Village has over 100 stores selling art, jewelry, flowers, clothing, as well as one-of-a-kind souvenirs. 

Admire Kaka’ako colorful murals around the neighborhood

In addition Kaka’ako’s fantastic food scene and great restaurants, it’s also an art-filled haven for artists. Visitors will immediately notice the many massive and memorable colorful murals painted on the sides of warehouses and other businesses. This is courtesy of Pow Wow Hawaii, a collective led by founder Jasper Wong. This innovative group invites artists from the islands and around the globe to decorate the structures annually, and it’s always an exciting event!

Currently, there are many splashy murals adorning the sides of buildings. So, you can easily spend a few hours wandering and admiring the art. It’s an exciting way to stroll the neighborhood, as you’ll always be surprised with the variety of artwork that’s just around the corner.

Oahu’s Kaka’ako is a beachfront location

Although Kaka’ako is an urban neighborhood, it’s a quick walk to the waves. So, if you wish to take a beach break while you’re enjoying the area, just walk over to the Kaka’ako Waterfront Park. There, you’ll find wide open space and a great spot to relax, have a picnic, and enjoy the lovely Hawaiian scenery. You can see the hotels and skyline of Waikiki in the distance, too.

It’s adjacent to the Ala Moana Beach Park, which is also popular with SUP paddleboarders and kayakers who use this area as a launching pad.

Summary: The best way to visit the Kaka’ako neighborhood

When you’re visiting Oahu and wish to see something outside of Waikiki beach, the Kaka’ako neighborhood is a fantastic place to explore! Ideally, it’s a spot for a half-day of fun. In the morning, you can start with breakfast at a local Kaka’ako cafe, and check out the murals and shops. Or, visit in the afternoon, where you can stroll around and admire the many murals, browse around the many independently-owned shops — and then plan for a fabulous dinner (and after-dinner drinks, too)!

Keep in mind the neighborhood is popular, especially in the evening, so be sure to make your restaurant reservations in advance!

Hawaii travel in 2023

I’ve traveled to Hawaii many times over the years, most recently in the fall of 2022. Just like the rest of the United States, Hawaii carefully monitors covid and most hotels make sure their cleanliness policy exceeds expectations but the state does not currently have any restrictions in place.

Waikiki hotels featured in the guidebooks

While in Oahu, Hawaii, I spent my time visiting nearly every hotel in Waikiki and staying in four different hotels during my visit. I updated every hotel that is listed in the Oahu book. If you’re seeking a place to stay in Waikiki, check out my blog post on this topic with details about many hotels that I have personally stayed in! On my recent trips to Hawaii and Waikiki, I spent a few days at the luxurious beachfront Halekulani resort and the newer Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani across the street. As the name suggests, the Halepuna is a sister property to the Halekulani, which is situated just steps away, it’s home to the Halekulani Bakery and an awesome pool deck overlooking the ocean. I took the photo below of the beautiful view from the lanai of my room at the Halekulani hotel. I also stayed at the Alohilani resort (across the street from Kuhio beach and the famous Duke statue, The Prince Hotel Waikiki and Hilton Hawaiian Village on my recent visits to Hawaii.

All of the hotel listings in the Fodor’s guidebooks contain brief summaries that include a description and a few of the property’s pros and cons. 

In addition to my time spent in Hawaii this year (and several previous trips in recent years), I made sure my contributions to the books were accurate and as up-to-date as possible. I keep in touch with many Hawaii-based friends who were kind enough to keep me posted about news related to tourism – after I had flown back home. 

During the writing and updating process, I visited Hawaii several times and made sure to stay in contact with my wonderful Hawaii friends and business associates to double (and triple-check) what was happening on the islands before officially submitting my sections of the chapters. There was a lot of activity going on behind the scenes. For example, during this time, some hotels, such as the Sheraton Waikiki and the Halekulani, took the opportunity to close their properties and undergo renovations — so check out those hotels’ amazing renovations and transformations!

Adult women who skateboard are embracing this sport for a number of reasons. Some skated as kids but had no female role models or girlfriends to skate with. Others decided to give skateboarding a whirl when their own children expressed interest and they found themselves at skateparks or in their streets or driveways. 

Women who skateboard in Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, Melanie Bartlett stepped on a board for the first time about three years ago, at age 40 after her then-five-year-old daughter began taking lessons at Skate the Foundry, an indoor skate park in the city. She had been wanting to try skateboarding for many years and never had the opportunity. Melanie explained, “Over the span of a few weeks, as I saw my daughter learning, I was inspired. I learned that skateboarding could be broken down into steps that made it more accessible and less intimidating. Then I bought myself a skateboard, safety gear — and the rest is history. I love it and I’m empowered by each little skate goal I conquer.”  

As Melanie progressed, she fostered friendships with skaters of all levels and ages, whom she refers to as her “crew.” She plays an integral role in organizing meet-ups in parks around Philadelphia and the surrounding area. Her time spent at the skateparks has certainly paid off…not only does she have many new friends, but she’s also featured in the upcoming film, “Skate Femme” by Ryan Doherty and Anna Danielle Moore, scheduled to be released in 2021.

Melanie loves to cheer on other new skateboarders and has been instrumental in encouraging Skate the Foundry, a private indoor Philly skatepark, to introduce adult lessons over two years ago – a first in the city. Skate the Foundry owners (and husband and wife team) Brett Williams and Yui Matsuzaki soon discovered that most of the adult students who signed up for classes were female. 

Learning to skateboard as an adult

If you’re interested in learning how to skate, start with your local skate shop and see if they can offer some advice. There are a number of indoor skate parks, such as “Skate the Foundry” in Philadelphia that offer adult skating lessons, both private and small groups.

Women’s skateboarding inspiration

Older skaters, Jean says, are go-getters (both inside and outside of the half-pipe). “What surprised me about skateboarding is how motivated and helpful many of those ‘older’ skaters are. I skate with friends who started in their 40s, or returned to skating after years away. Many of these people have started skate-related charities, hosted skate events and created skate companies – all while still holding down full time jobs.”

Women who skateboard – practice makes perfect

A few years ago, when I visited Los Angeles, I connected with a fabulous and friendly skateboarder, Kay, who lives in the city. She always wanted to skateboard and started in her late 40s. She’s been documenting her skate progress on Instagram, so I contacted her and we met up on a sunny morning at a skatepark she chose because she knew it was less crowded and easier for beginners. She was a blast to skate with — and very inspiring. On subsequent visits, I met up with her at a number of Los Angeles-area skateparks and it’s always so much fun! We even skated at the world-famous Venice Beach skatepark. She’s still skating almost every day…If I lived in LA, I would be skating with her more often! Don Manuel’s restaurant

Showcasing modern delights inspired by the classics, Don Manuel’s is the resort’s signature eatery that’s open for breakfast and dinner. This stylish open-air restaurant features jaw-dropping views of the beach and ocean from just about every table.

Guests can start the morning off with a delectable breakfast that includes omelettes and plenty of local favorites (as well a fresh fruit smoothie bar) prepared with local, organic ingredients.

In the evening, the restaurant transforms into a sophisticated and lovely terraced destination. A few dinner specialties include roasted totoaba “Veracruzana” with capers, olives, tomato, chile sauce, celery root and spiced beets; catch of the day “Zarandeado” with peanuts adobo, orange and salad with cilantro; and braised lamb shank “mixiote” style with roasted vegetables, ancho and guajillo chile sauce.

Crudo Bar

The resort’s unique Crudo Bar is situated in the shade under the thatched pavilion adjacent to the main swimming pool. Ideal for a snack, the bar offers a wide selection of freshly prepared items, including catch of the day tiraditos; black shrimp ceviche; seafood molcajete; tostadas and zesty Mexican-inspired rolls made with fresh, regional ingredients.

While dining, guests love to stay refreshed by relaxing in the seats in the pool or sitting at a high-top table in the shade – all while sampling some of these specialties and gazing out across the infinity pool at the Pacific. (For more casual selections, the adjacent pool restaurant also serves salads, tacos, wraps and more).

The not-to-be missed signature cocktail, the Pedregal Reyes, is made with tequila reposado, Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, grapefruit, pomegranate, lime and orange juice.

Cooking classes on the property

Who says you can’t learn something on vacation? For those who wish to pick up a few culinary techniques while on this magnificent property, there are several opportunities.

The resort offers several one-hour personalized cooking classes held at the resort’s oceanfront hacienda-style kitchen, where attendees get an exclusive lesson in authentic Mexican cooking by a professional chef. The classes focus on using indigenous ingredients and shows how to make local specialties such as tamales, mole sauces and an array of fresh ceviche.

Tequila tastings for beginners and experts

In addition to the culinary classes, the resort also offers a series of private tequila tastings at the resort’s stylish, open air restaurant, Don Manuel’s. These tastings are suited for the novice, as well as those more experienced in the world of tequila.

The beginner classes focus on the history of the spirit and introduce the diverse expressions of un-aged and aged tequila: blanco, reposado and anejo. Update: Covid restrictions have been lifted in most places.  But for future travel, it’s always a good idea to ask about the hotel or rental property’s safety and health policy!  

• Check to see if your state is in a “hot zone” for the coronavirus — or if you are traveling to an area that has recently experienced a spike in COVID cases.  
• Check if the state you are traveling to has a mandatory quarantine requirement. (For example, New Jersey requires visitors from over 20 other states to self-quarantine for two weeks upon arrival).  

Prior to booking your hotel, Airbnb or rental home, be sure to ask the hotel representative or Airbnb host the following health-related questions: 

• What is the cleaning process used in the room / home? 
• Which specific products are used for cleaning? 
• What products will be available for you to personally use during your stay? (This will help you determine if you need to bring any extra). 
• Does your room or condo have a private entrance? If not, inquire about the mask policy in the lobby or common areas that you may need to walk through in order to gain entrance to your rental space. 
• If you are staying in a hotel room, check to see whether or not the room has a table for dining if you choose to order take-out. If not, ask if there is a common area with a table you can use and where it is located. 
• How often are the common areas are cleaned? How are health and safety restrictions enforced in any shared areas, such as the pool, rooftop deck, etc?
• If the property has a restaurant, ask about their health policy. 
• Plan for your meals and do some advance research regarding several area restaurants. This limits seating, so advance restaurant reservations may be necessary.  

Healthy travel essentials to pack with you: 

• Masks (and extra masks!)
• Hand sanitizer 
• Disinfecting spray (such as Lysol) 
• Disinfecting wipes 
• Re-usable water bottle 
• Gloves 
• Extra hand soap

Additional travel products to bring with you for road trips:

• Don’t forget your cell phones, electronic devices and chargers. 
• Extra roll of paper towels 
• Cooler with food and beverages. For example, if you are taking a 3-day road trip, you can pack fruit, granola bars, trail mix, and other non-perishable items.
