For clients who wish to leisurely explore Oahu by bicycle, a Pedego Electric Bike (e-bike) may just be the way to go.

After he got hooked on riding an e-bike a few years ago, avid cycling enthusiast Michael Robles opened e-bike store Pedego Waikiki in 2018. From his centrally located shop, he takes riders on two-wheeled sightseeing adventures across the island on Pedego e-bikes.

Earlier this summer, my husband and I took the company’s most popular offering, the three-hour E-Bike Waikiki and Beyond Tour, which was guided by Robles. Overall, the Pedego e-bikes were user-friendly, and anyone who has ridden a bike can easily operate one after a demonstration and a quick practice ride on the street. In our experience, the bikes had a low learning curve.

As a bonus, high-tech helmets enabled us to hear and communicate with Robles. I found this to be especially helpful when in the back of the group or if I needed to stop along the way.

Pedego bikes featured an optional “pedal assist” operated by a throttle on the handlebars, which transforms an uphill pedal into an effortless glide. When the assist was engaged, I felt the boost immediately. It was almost like someone giving me a swift, smooth push. As a rider, I had all the control regarding how much extra power I required.

“Our assist option allows you go everywhere and see everything farther and faster than on a regular bicycle,” Robles said. “Time and again, my customers say it blows their mind that the ride is so much fun.”

Clients take a spin past Honolulu Harbor as part of the electric bike tour.

Credit: 2019 Pedego

Fun and flexible, the tours are tailored to riders’ abilities. If clients prefer to ride the e-bike like a regular bike, they can bypass the electric option entirely. The bikes are heavier than standard bicycles, however, and at first, I noticed the extra weight.

The Waikiki and Beyond excursion began at the Pedego shop and continued on flat ground past Ala Wai canal, then wound through Ala Moana Beach Park, with some photo ops along the Magic Island lagoon and Kakaako waterfront. We rolled across Waikiki with some sightseeing stops such as the Duke Kahanamoku statue, Waikiki Aquarium and Diamond Head crater. At this point, the road became steeper, and we really experienced the e-bike’s boosting power. Eventually, the tour continued to the upscale Kahala neighborhood, passing stunning viewpoints along the way. Afterward, we returned to the shop in Waikiki.

“This particular route was chosen because of the easy bike access, as well as the overwhelming beauty of each location,” Robles said. “The tour begins on flat terrain and gets progressively steeper. You’ll see beaches, palm trees, gorgeous views and get a taste of the city while pedaling around. Each spot speaks to everyone in its own unique way.”

The tour is especially family-friendly, which means participants of all ages can enjoy riding together, as the e-bike levels the playing field.

Pedego’s e-bike tours start and end at its shop in Waikiki.
Credit: 2019 Pedego

“On the Waikiki and Beyond tour, I’ve had a baby less than 1 year old, as well as a grandma who was 83,” Robles said. “One of the things I love about e-bikes is that the generational gap closes instantly, and it allows everyone to ride at the same level. It’s thrilling to see parents, grandparents and kids all enjoy this experience.”

Ideal for visitors who wish to get out of Waikiki for a few hours, the tour offers a great way to sightsee without renting a car. I’ve been fortunate enough to have visited Oahu several times, but before this tour, I had not been to Magic Island or explored the neighborhood of Kakaako, an area with shops, restaurants and colorful murals. It was lovely to admire the ocean views while cycling up the hills — and it was extra fun to see others do double-takes when they realized we were on an e-bike.

Currently, Pedego’s two tours are Waikiki and Beyond (three hours; $160 per person) and Diamond Head Bike Hike and Kahala Excursion (four hours; $190 per person). Both include a lunch at Kahala Hotel & Resort. If visitors prefer to explore a specific neighborhood or different part of the island, Robles can adjust the tour to accommodate.

Whether you’re an avid globetrotter or a casual traveler, jet lag will likely play a role as you become acclimated to your new destination—but it doesn’t have to ruin your trip.

Stay Hydrated

Travel writer Ramsey Qubein (aka @DailyTravelTips on Twitter) flies over 400,000 miles annually as a contributor to a number of major news and travel publications. He recommends always staying hydrated while flying. “Drink lots of water and avoid caffeine and alcohol. Of course, this is not always easy for passengers in middle seats (getting up to the bathroom can be annoying) or those enjoying premium cabin amenities.” When you land, drink as much water as possible. “Cold water is even more refreshing,” he says. Drinking water is encouraged on board, but make sure you never do these 18 things on an airplane.

Brush your teeth

Upon landing or arriving at your hotel, Qubein suggests some quick hygiene. Brushing your teeth wakes you up, surprisingly well, he says. “If you have time, take a shower. It helps your body to stay hydrated.”

Catch up on sleep

Greg Mann, American Airlines international flight attendant and avid traveler (104 countries and counting!), suggests trying to adjust to the time zone of your destination while still in flight. For example, “on longer flights to Asia that arrive in the morning, it is best to try and sleep at the end of the flight before landing so your body clock is more attuned to the local time zone.” Try these seasoned traveler’s tips for getting to sleep on an airplane.

Invest in noise-cancelling headphones

“These eliminate noise and distractions around you, while also allowing you to get some quality rest,” Mann says. If you can’t sleep while listening to music, download a white noise app to create a better environment for sleep.

And try to sleep some more…

It’s not enough to sleep at the right time, you also have to work at it, advises Thierry Kennel, regional vice president of Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts and general manager of Four Seasons Hotel Denver. (He has lived in several cities around the world and currently flies approximately 30,000 miles a year.) While in the air, he recommends, “Let your flight attendants know not to bother you when you’re sleeping (in the nicest way) and bring along a comfortable neck pillow, ear plugs, and eye mask. These will allow you to truly feel comfortable enough to set the environment to allow you to have a peaceful slumber.”

…But don’t forget to move…

While flying, Mann suggests, “Move around as much as possible throughout the flight. Most airline magazines (including American Way, our in-flight magazine) have simple exercises and movements that you can do while seated.” Stretching your legs on a long flight will help work out the kinks and help keep your circulation moving. Also, follow the golden rules for taking the stress out of air travel.

…And stay moving

As hard as it is to do, some physical exercise (a quick walk or run) is the best way to get rid of jet lag once you have arrived at your destination, Mann says. Kennel agrees, “When I travel, I make sure I exercise daily; our fitness centers and spas at Four Seasons make it fun to work out.”

Go outdoors

“Since jet lag comes from changes to the body’s circadian rhythms by crossing three or more time zones, the goal is to minimize the effects of these disruptions to the body’s biological clock,” says Craig Tanio, MD, co-founder of Rezilir Health and chairman of Maryland Healthcare Commission. Dr. Tanio points out that the pineal gland—located at the base of the brain—is what sets the circadian rhythms. It is extremely sensitive to light, especially from the outdoors. “Be sure to go outdoors after you land—in the afternoon when traveling west and in the morning when heading east— so the natural light can help your body clock adjust.” Jet lag isn’t your only concern when traveling, here’s how to stay healthy on a plane.

Play with light

It’s not only outdoor light that affects us, indoor light and light from your electronics play a part, too. Dr. Tanio suggests, “Since the blue wavelength emitted from computer screens can trick our brains into thinking its daytime, download a program like F.lux to adjust the light from your computer to match the time zone of your destination.”

Take a power nap

Qubein says, “Once you arrive at your destination, try to stick to the local schedule, no matter what your body tells you. Of course, if you are only planning to be there for a few days, then this advice may not apply. A great rule of thumb for me, since I travel all over the world for just a few days at a time, is to sleep when tired. A little power nap will help you feel refreshed.”

Try melatonin

Most experts agree that its best to avoid sleeping pills and alcohol during travel and even after you arrive at your final destination. This will help with any jet lag issues. Dr. Tanio suggests, “Use melatonin, a hormone naturally made by the pineal gland, to advance your biological clock when traveling eastward by taking small doses 30 minutes before sleep.”

Stay mindful

If your schedule permits, travel pros suggest that to get over jet lag, it’s a good idea to plan some time to relax and take care of yourself. Meditation, gentle yoga, and healthy, light meals encourage rest, which will ultimately help to recharge and rejuvenate the body. Dr. Tanio recommends that if possible, “Stay at hotels with sauna and massage nearby—and make sure to budget time for them to help your body recover.” You’ll also want to make sure to pack these foods that can help beat jet lag in your carry-on.

Lake Austin Spa Resort is distinguished by its dedication to inspiring health and wellness by its waters.

Situated in the picturesque Austin, Texas, hill country and adjacent to the Balconies Canyonlands nature preserve, Lake Austin Spa Resort is a rustically elegant destination with 40 luxuriously designed guestrooms overlooking the scenic landscape. With private porches and waterfront views, all rooms are mere steps away from the 25,000-square-foot LakeHouse Spa, which offers more than 100 diverse services and treatments that combine traditional and modern techniques.

The tranquil LakeHouse Spa is located in a different building from the resort, and most guests wear bathrobes and slippers to stroll up the gentle curved slope, passing a small stream, waterfall and flower gardens to reach the main entrance. They’re welcomed at the front desk and directed to the spacious separate men’s and women’s locker rooms that include saunas, steam rooms and whirlpools. Created from limestone, the facility showcases warm accents of terra cotta and cedar, and is adorned with international artwork and textiles personally collected during the property owners’ travels. The spa features 20 state-of- the-art indoor treatment rooms, as well as an outdoor bamboo room with private shower and hot tub.

The resort integrates wellness throughout everything, with a focus on sustainability. For example, it boasts expansive organic herb and vegetable gardens that supply the spa’s Aster Café, as well as the resort’s main dining room. The light-filled second floor relaxation lounge, also known as the Blue Room, is a sophisticated and stylish sanctuary.

Guests are invited to unwind while awaiting treatments, and can enjoy flavored teas and healthy snacks as they take in the stunning lake vistas right outside the soaring windows.

In 2017, 20 new treatments were introduced to commemorate the resort’s 20th anniversary. Popular among these offerings: the Lavender Dreams Body Wrap (80 min./$225), which combines minerals and lavender for an invigorating full body exfoliation, followed by an upper body massage with lavender oil and warm healing stones; the Neroli Blossom Sensory Massage (50 min./$175; 80 min./$230), which incorporates tension release and breathing techniques with the refreshing essence of neroli; and Floating Meditation (50 min./$155), a relaxation session in which guests float on a mat while listening to a guided meditation. In addition, the on- site Iris Salon provides hair, nail and makeup services.

Water and Wellness

The property is certainly dedicated to its aquatic roots. In addition to the lake, it features three swimming pools in serene and unique settings. The heated Pool Barn lap pool is open-air along the perimeter (but covered for shade) and is used for a variety of treatments and classes. Nearby, the outdoor Palm Pool is a calm retreat, surrounded by lounge chairs and cabanas. The resort’s third outdoor pool is, of course, lakeside. “Our location on the lake is a huge draw—and it helps that we are about 30 minutes from downtown Austin,” explains managing director Janis Clapoff. “A lot of people like to spend some time in the city, and then come out to the hill country for a few days to detox and recharge by the water.”

The resort’s robust daily schedule encompasses a multitude of fitness and strength-training classes, including yoga, Pilates, dance, meditation and an assortment of aquatic activities. On the lake, guests can partake in standup paddleboarding, kayaking, hydro-biking and water skiing, among others. Suffice it to say that they are never without something to participate in. There’s also a floating mattress tethered to the dock for those looking to simply relax.

In an effort to capitalize on such a privileged location, the LakeHouse Spa is dedicated to tying wellness and water together. The Ripple Effect, a recently launched program of land- and water-based offerings, is built around the idea that being in nature—and near water in particular—has a positive effect on people’s well-being. Spearheaded by fitness and activities director Cindy Present, the program reflects elements of marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols’ book, Blue Mind (Hachette Book Group, 2014), which discusses how spending time near or in the water can reduce stress and encourage overall happiness. The Ripple Effect includes activities such as the aforementioned Floating Mediation in the Pool Barn, lakeside yoga on standup paddleboards, aquatic Zumba and more.

During my stay, I was most curious about the innovative Aqua Stretch Myofascial Release (25 min./$95; 50 min./$155), a newly implemented treatment that’s already one of the spa’s most requested offerings. This one-on-one assisted stretching session conducted in the Pool Barn is a combination of a deep tissue massage and intense physical therapy. As we stood in the shallow water, aquatics specialist Monica Gutierrez guided me through a series of precise and dynamic stretching exercises. This personalized treatment involved constant communication, as Gutierrez continually checked in to see where I was experiencing pain or tightness and then focused on those specific areas. The experience was both blissful and rejuvenating, as I felt my muscles relaxing immediately and tightness quickly (and noticeably) dissipating.

Ensuring a Positive

Experience As an upscale setting with affluent clientele, the LakeHouse Spa is committed to keeping guests happy. As such, employee recruitment and training is paramount. “We hire people who have

the right personality and mindfulness for our team. Staff members should be calm, empathic and passionate. They must enjoy other people and being part of a goals-driven team, and they should be healthy, or motivated to get healthier so they can help others do the same,” says Clapoff. “They have to come to the table with a service-oriented nature, but I’m not necessarily looking for someone who has been in the wellness or hospitality industry—that’s something we can train for.”

Drawing about 50 percent of its clientele from locals who enjoy the spa’s day packages, Lake Austin also attracts guests from as far as New York. The resort works with travel agent partners through targeted marketing, and has recently started outreach to the West Coast.

In addition to advertising and public relations, not surprisingly, social media also plays a major role in the spa’s promotion. “It’s a normal part of life now,” notes Clapoff. “It has really helped us get the word out about the spa.” One successful program included the hashtag #LakeAustinSpa20, created to celebrate the resort’s 20th anniversary in 2017. Featuring “selfie stations” throughout the property, guests were invited to finish the sentence: “Lake Austin Spa Resort makes me feel…” They were encouraged to write their answers in chalk and post selfies with the hashtag to Instagram and Facebook. Some guests continued to use the hashtag throughout the year, sharing their favorite memories of the spa resort to generate widespread word of mouth.

Originally published in USA Today

A day at the beach brings joy to visitors of all ages. Those who love to vacation by oceans, lakes and even swimming pools can attest to the water’s power to inspire relaxation and promote personal rejuvenation. And it’s no wonder that so many hotels and resorts are situated on the water, as travelers often pay a premium for shimmering views.

The bestselling book, Blue Mind: The surprising science that shows how being near, in, on, or underwater can make you happier, healthier, more connected, and better at what you do, by marine biologist Wallace J. Nichols, focuses on the proven scientific evidence that being close to bodies of water promotes mental health and happiness.

As an avid traveler as well as scientist, Nichols realized at an early age that the ocean inspired a sense of peacefulness within. From playing in the waves at the New Jersey shore as a child to his later SCUBA diving explorations, he understood that enjoying the water was more than a fun pastime — it was a natural way to rest and recharge.

I caught up with Nichols at the Lake Austin Spa Resort in Texas, where he launched a Blue Mind partner program. He explained why he and other scientists agree that the healing power of water is beneficial to emotional health and physical well-being, and why you should travel to achieve your own “blue mind.”

Q: What inspired you to write your book, Blue Mind?

A: Honestly, I wanted to read a book about water’s positive effects on the human body and mind, but couldn’t find anything that had been published — because it hadn’t been written. Then I tried to convince some colleagues who were neuroscientists and psychologists to write it, and gave them my research — but they would not write it. My third choice was to write it myself — and it took me about five years.

Q: What’s the concept of “Blue Mind” ?

A: The term “blue mind” describes the mildly meditative state we fall into when near, in, on or under water. It’s the antidote to what we refer to as “red mind,” which is the anxious, over-connected and over-stimulated state that defines the new normal of modern life. Research has proven that spending time near the water is essential to achieving an elevated and sustained happiness.

I like to ask people I meet, “What’s your water?” This essentially means, “What’s the first water you think of and what’s the water you dream about and long for? What does it feel like, smell like and look like?” These questions make people contemplate their relationship with water.

Q: Why is it so important to vacation by the water?

A: Research has shown that being near, in, on or under water can provide a long list of benefits for our mind and body, including lowering stress and anxiety, increasing an overall sense of well-being and happiness, a lower heart and breathing rate, and safe, better workouts. Aquatic therapists are increasingly looking to the water to help treat and manage PTSD, addiction, anxiety disorders, autism and more. We’ve found that being near water boosts creativity, can enhance the quality of conversations and provides a backdrop to important parts of living — like play, romance and grieving. All of this depends on these waters being safe, clean and healthy, of course.

In experiments, images depicting water triggered a more positive response than those without water. Flip through any travel magazine and you’ll see that editors and advertisers understand this very well.

This “blue mind” response to water is best understood from the long view. Our ancestors were on the move — and finding water was a matter of life or death. That all of our senses respond positively to water is highly adaptive … However, there’s really no downside to indulging our love of water — completely and often!

Q: How do you hope the “blue mind” concept will influence others?

A: My global vision is that the “blue mind” concept will influence and change the way all resorts, spas, surf camps and even hospitals do their work. Of course, how this translates to different businesses will all be different. I just want it to be common knowledge that sitting by the water quietly is really good for you. And I want parents and teachers to teach our young people that … and tell them if you are having a bad day, get to the water and you will feel much better.

Blue mind is not achieved while you are on Instagram … ever. It’s impossible. One of the requirements is logging out, turning off and putting the screens away. When you do that, you are beginning to quiet your mind and move into a different mode. As you make your journey towards the water, you go deeper into your blue mind. There’s a time and place to bring your phone in the waterproof case and shoot video … and there’s a time to turn it all off.

Q: Since you travel extensively, which destinations have you discovered to be best for achieving a “blue mind?”

A: Most of us have access to water, lakes or oceans in some form — and we underutilize their potential. Whether it’s a deeply relaxing vacation or a weekend getaway, water is the best way to reset. There are many locations that you can go to experience a blue mind — you don’t necessarily need to be near the ocean. If you look at a map of the U.S. or world, there is blue everywhere — rivers, lakes, ponds — and not to mention pools and what we call “domesticated water.” You don’t have to go far. “Blue mind” is not an exclusively ocean-only conversation, it’s a water conversation, and there are incredibly amazing waterways everywhere — around the world.

Q: You also promote eco-friendly travels. What trends are you seeing in the travel world today?

A: I think the next generation of travelers and spa goers will be seeking more creative sustainability on several levels. There is a definite shift that’s happening. A prime example is the 1 Hotel. I recently stayed at their South Beach, Fla., location and it features eco-friendly, nature-oriented design themes and programming. It’s very nicely done and they are going beyond the norm … even the hangers in the rooms are made from recycled cardboard maps.

Hotels need to be serving the greater good. When you stay at an authentically sustainable property, you feel good about yourself and feel that you made some kind of impact.

Q: You use the term “slow coast,” to identify the quiet California coastline between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. Why is this area special?

A: The “slow coast” is over the hill from Silicon Valley — it’s where I live with my family in Davenport, Calif. It’s mellow, undeveloped and the opposite of a fast-paced lifestyle. There are organic farms, great beaches, wineries and fun surfing. You can go out to the beach and be alone for miles. Increasingly, my wife and I like having stay-cations with the family. It’s become such a luxury when the kids are out of school and we have no deadlines or work travel.

Q: As co-author of the book, The Worldwide Travel Guide to Sea Turtles, you have been raising awareness about protecting them. What’s happening with sea turtles now?

A: Super exciting news! Around the globe, sea turtles are making a comeback … and I think it has a lot to do with our emotional connection and some of the unstoppable and tenacious ocean warriors I’ve been working with along the way! We are about to reach our millionth baby sea turtle goal through our conservation organization SEE Turtles and its “Billion Baby Turtles” project that was launched recently. Also, our efforts to restore the black sea turtle have been successful, a sign of real-world success.

The new Four Seasons Downtown NYC dazzles with its extravagant spa.

The Distinction

Designed by Yabu Pushelberg in an earth-toned color palette with white Italian travertine floors, white tay wood walls and a showpiece black and white marble front desk, the inviting, light-filled space provides a respite from the concrete jungle outside. This is the only spa in downtown New York City with an outdoor terrace offering city views—during warmer months, the private 600-square-foot balcony features a meditation lounge for guests awaiting appointments. An indoor relaxation room serves light snacks and beverages, such as freshly pressed juices and kombucha created by hotel chef Shaun Acosta.

Director of Spa Tara Cruz explains, “We create customizable experiences for locals and well-traveled guests alike. Management really took the time to carefully plan the spa from the very beginning and make it a special entity, rather than an afterthought.”

Capturing Clientele

The Four Seasons Downtown NYC has a robust social media program, but connecting with local businesses and residents remains a priority for the spa, and word of mouth from friends and colleagues is another essential component. “The New York downtown neighborhood is a tight-knit scene,” says Cruz. “As a native New Yorker, I understand that every business in this area—from the smallest yoga studio to the largest international organization—is a potential client.”

Management M.O.

The Four Seasons encourages all spa employees to participate in the company’s team building exercises as well as corporate training. In addition, the spa provides augmented educational sessions, including intensive classes with top-level educators from skincare brands. “Appreciation, communication and honesty are paramount here,” adds Cruz. “The amazing onboarding program sets the tone from the start and ensures that everyone has the same clear vision.”

In-Demand Service

The spa’s most touted treatment, the Luxury Green Caviar facial (80 min./$340), helps promote healthy circulation while providing an instant “lift” to the face. Popular as a pre-event service, the revitalizing protocol combines natural antiaging ingredients, like green caviar, with more science-based bells and whistles, such as VitaSkin ultrasound. At the beginning and end of the treatment, guests enjoy an inhalation ritual with a choice of essential oils including juniper, lavender and peppermint—whichever suits their mood at the time.

The Goods

This is so far the only spa in the U.S. to offer natural Swiss skincare line Dr. Burgener. With a commitment to wellness, so-called “alchemist of luxury” Pauline Burgener has developed her bespoke products to nurture the skin through holistic and medical techniques. Her signature collection is retailed in the spa boutique, along with Omorovicza—a Hungarian brand also employed in spa services—plus jewelry by ASH + AMES, bath products by Red Flower, candles by Fleur, and bathing suits and loungewear by various upscale brands.

Noteworthy: With a philosophy of “Pause, Play and Perfect,” Eau Spa manages to strike a balance between wellness and frivolity. The tranquil 7,000-square-foot Self Centered Garden features a fountain, waterfalls and dipping pools, plus cabanas where select aromatherapy services take place. Private garden villas come with outdoor patios, soaking tubs and waterfall showers, reflecting the Floridian art of sublime relaxation.
