For travelers on a vacation that’s less than two weeks, it’s ideal to choose one island, as it’s challenging to visit more than one island and still have a relaxing trip. Keep in mind that unless you’re on a cruise, the only way to travel between the Hawaiian islands is by airplane.

Maui Wildfires in 2023: Maui recently experienced devastating wildfires. Unfortunately, the town of Lahaina was completely destroyed. However, Maui is open! As of 2024, The locations mentioned in this post are open for visitors. Maui residents are asking travelers to visit but to avoid the immediate area around Lahaina. Be sure to double-check as you make your plans, as the situation with residents in the area is improving day by day. If you visit, you can also choose to volunteer for a variety of activities to help the people who are still affected by the wildfires.

True to its name, The Big Island is the largest of the Hawaiian islands and is home to multiple ecosystems with a diverse terrain that includes black, green, and red sand beaches that can be found on various parts of the island.

The island of Maui is called, “The Valley Isle,” and is also the second-largest of the Hawaiian islands. It receives about 25 percent of Hawaii’s visitors and is famous for gorgeous beaches, whale watching during the winter months, and the spectacular sunrises (and sunsets) from its tallest peak, Haleakala.

Maui: Things To Do

You don’t want to miss the incredible sunrise from the summit of the majestic Haleakala volcano, the island’s tallest peak. There are plenty of tours here, and most of them start in a pre-dawn hour so you can witness fantastic daybreak when you reach the summit. Shop in Whaler’s Village

On Maui, Kaanapali has excellent beaches – and some great shopping, too. One of the best shopping areas on Maui is Kaanapali’s Whaler’s Village. It’s within walking distance of many oceanfront hotels, has several restaurants (and you can also walk to nearby bars and restaurants) and it’s located on the ocean, so you can stroll along a (paved) walkway when you’re finished shopping.

Take the road to Hana

Most visitors to Maui plan to explore the road to Hana on their visit, as it’s a great way to see fantastic scenic views and waterfalls. But we all know that the Hana Highway is best when someone else is driving! Instead of driving yourself (and possibly missing some of those breathtaking views), take a private tour to Hana tour that includes breakfast and lunch — and let an expert drive, while you sit back, relax and enjoy this incredible ride. You’ll swim in waterfalls, see a black sand beach and stop at many breathtaking lookout points along the way.

Learn to surf

Maui is where I stepped on a surfboard for the first time and it’s a beautiful place to learn how to surf. Even if you are an intermediate or advanced surfer, Maui is the best place to feel the exhilaration of catching waves! Visit Volcanos National Park

On the big Island, Volcanos National Park is home to two active volcanos, Kiluaea and Mauna Loa. You can tour these volcanos with a private guided tour, which will ensure that you see the best of everything and get the chance to explore these incredible natural wonders. It’s an incredible experience to get up close to these volcanoes and learn about how they are helping to shape the island. Explore waterfalls

The Big Island is home to an abundance of magnificent waterfalls. The best way to see these spectacular waterfalls is with a small group adventure waterfall tour, as you’ll get close to the best waterfalls with a local expert who knows the optimal places for viewing. This sprawling oceanfront resort across many acres is legendary and truly offers something for everyone. There are multiple styles of rooms, several swimming pools (including a water-park-style pool area for kids and a separate pool for adults). There’s also an on-property lagoon and breathtaking tropical gardens with pathways that wind through the property. There are several restaurants here, a lovely chapel – and even a world-class art collection at this iconic resort. Truly something for everyone at this breathtaking resort!

Big Island Accommodations

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Autograph Collection

Perched on a jaw-droppingly beautiful cove on the Kona coast, this hotel was built in 1965 and considered the most expensive resort in the world at that time. It remains a top, five-star destination the The Big Island. This resort is home to various sizes of rooms and suites; several restaurants overlooking the ocean. It’s situated on one of the most idyllic beaches in the world, with a cool beach bar and beach activities steps away, including lounge chairs, umbrellas, outrigger canoe rides, reef snorkeling, and manta ray nighttime snorkeling!

Overlooking another beautiful cove, the Hapuna Beach Resort along the Kona coast is the newer sister property to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel next door. Hilton Waikoloa Village

This iconic Hawaiian resort is situated on over 60 acres on the Kohola coast – it’s so large it has a very conveient train running through it — to help guests get from one end of this massive property to the other! There are several swimming pools here, a lagoon,  a multitude of awesome restaurants, and several styles of guestrooms and suites. There are plenty of shops, bars, and beachfront activities, too.

On the other side of the island, Hilo offers a completely different, more laid-back vibe than the Kona or Kohala coasts. Lodging winner: Maui (although the Big Island is a close second!) Maui has a vast assortment of large and small hotels and resorts. Most are oceanfront — and some are within walking distance of shops, and restaurants.

Maui vs Big Island: Which Is Best For Families?

There are many destinations throughout Hawaii that are excellent for families. After all, as long as you have a great pool and easy beach access, you’ll have a wonderful location. Depending on the ages of your kids and teens, there are more choices to make regarding the best place to stay and the ideal location. Older kids will have more activities available to them.  

Maui For Family Travel

If you’re traveling with children to Maui, you will want to make things easy! And Maui is a great island to plan ahead for family-friendly activities! It’s best to start by choosing the best resort for your kids. Choose a large resort with big, family pools that are convenient for easy family activities such as (for example) the Grand Wailea or the Westin Maui Resort and Spa.  

The Big Island For Family Travel

The Big Island is also a destination where you can bring your family, but it will require a bit more planning. The island is volcanic, so you’ll need to check which beaches offer the soft sand (instead of volcanic rock!) You’ll also be better off with kids at a big, family-friendly resort with a pool and amenities, such as the Manua Kea, Hapuna and Hilton Waikoloa Village (all listed above!) Keep in mind that the the Big Island’s popular activities (such as hiking the volcano, trekking to waterfalls, snorkeling with manta rays, and taking helicopter rides) may be a bit too intense for very young children.

The Family Vacation Winner: Maui! Why Maui? Maui has a wide array of resorts with massive, family-friendly pools and easy beach access. The Big Island has a few as well, but Maui just has more to choose from, and they are located in places where you might not need a car to reach restaurants and stores. As mentioned above, many of The Big Island’s popular activities are more rugged and may be more suitable for older kids and teens.

Maui vs. Big Island: Average Vacation Cost

Travelers to Hawaii agree that Hawaii is expensive, no matter which island you choose!

It’s the most isolated group of islands in the world, and everything needs to be shipped from the US mainland (or elsewhere) and prices for everything are very high. Generally speaking, the cost of traveling to Maui is slightly more expensive than the Big Island, but that depends on the time of year, where you are flying from, how long you will be flying — and which type of accommodations you are choosing.

Airfare from the US mainland fluctuates a bit, but it’s safe to assume airfare from the east coast is about $1,000 to $1,400 for economy seats. A small price to pay for paradise!

Cost of Traveling To Maui

Depending on the time of year, a trip to Maui for two for a week could be approximately $5,000 – $10,000 (without airfare) depending on the resort you choose and the type of restaurants and activities you prefer.

Cost of Traveling To Big Island

Depending on the time of year, a trip to The Big Island of Hawaii for two for a week could be approximately $4,200 – $10,000 (without airfare) depending on the resort you choose and the type of restaurants and activities you prefer.

As a globetrotting travel writer, I have learned that certain items are essential when flying or going on your next vacation. Another cool bagI often travel with Is Aloha Collection. I love these colorful “splash proof” bags of all sizes — they get five big stars from me! I use these bags mostly in Hawaii and other beach destinations.

Finally – these tiny, silicone travel containers from INSFIT are the best way to travel with liquids and creams!

Travel Blanket that folds Up and packs easy

When you fly, you might find that the in-air temperature has been very cold during most of the flight. As most airlines don’t have blankets available (even in business class) it’s best to bring your own. I learned this the hard way…I had to borrow a blanket from a very kind passenger sitting next to me last summer. (And yes, I was already wearing my hoodie and socks – see below)!

Needless to say, the first thing I did when I got home was to purchase a travel blanket for myself.

This international company makes great shoes in a rainbow of colors that are also incredibly cushy, comfortable, colorful, and stylish. They have many “slip-in” options, too! Personally, I have several pairs of these awesome sneakers. They are great for travel because they are perfect for everything — and easily go from the city to the beach.

Best hoodie for travel

I always wear a hoodie when I travel, and especially on my flights. It keeps me warm, and has pockets for all those small items that you need on a flight.

Be sure your hoodie has inside and outside pockets. Inside pockets make it so convenient to hold your phone, wallet, passport, ear phones or ear buds, water bottle, lip balm and anything else that you need easy access on the plane. (This is so much easier than rummaging through that bag under your seat, or having to take your other bag out of the overhead bin).

I’m a fan of the Scott eVest hoodie (available for men and women) — because it features 18 hidden pockets — and doubles as a casual light jacket that you can wear during your trip!

Lightweight, compact Binoculars

I’m always thankful when I bring my small, lightweight, powerful binoculars on a trip! They are extremely valuable when hiking, on the beach, or just admiring the views from your hotel window or balcony.

My favorite binoculars are Nikon (especially compact sizes), as they are tiny and easy to travel with. They are lightweight, compact and can fit in the smallest of bags. You can toss them in your beach bag, day pack or carry-on bag, too. These weigh practically nothing.

On your next trip, pack a small pair of binoculars and you’ll be glad you did!

If you’re like me, you probably have a collection of water bottles at home of all shapes and sizes. Put Hydro Flask at the top of the list! Compression socks for long flights

Yes, you need compression socks on long flights!

You may have read about the importance of compression socks, but if not, check out this article about the health benefits of compression socks on Web MD. I’ve learned the best thing to do is wear regular socks to the airport and keep your compression socks in your carry-on.

There are many brands of compression socks — this brand offers a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Extra hint: Don’t wait until you’ve already boarded and in your seat to put on your compression socks, because space is limited on the plane and the socks are very (and necessarily) tight. So, it’s not easy to maneuver when you’re in your seat and space is limited.

Packing cubes to keep you organized

Many gift guides mention the value of packing cubes – for good reason. In my opinion, these zippered cubes really are the best travel companions and are so helpful in keeping your items organized while traveling.

Packing cubes are available in different colors, sizes, and thickness. You can choose from a variety of styles, too. For example, if you need to fit in as much stuff as possible in your suitcase, “compression” bags can be especially helpful.

Personally, I like using cubes of different colors and sizes to organize my items, as that makes it easy to identify what’s inside.

I’ve been a fan of this company for a very long time and own several different types and styles of bags. These modern, stylish, and functional bags are all you need for travel. Cincha travel belt for your luggage

This new product is a clever travel belt that you wrap around your luggage. It has been very helpful to me in recent months, especially when flying and I need to navigate through airports and / or walk long distances with my roller suitcase. And these travel belts can help you, too, if you give them a try!

Cincha is simple and easy — it allows you to ‘add’ a bag to your roller luggage securely, and it will save you from juggling too many bags.

Cincha travel belt is essentially a cool belt that easily and tightly slips over the handle of your roller suitcase and clips around your smaller tote bag or backpack. It’s available in a selection of colors and sizes and they just offered a newer version with a small bag attached to the belt.

Rimowa: Gorgeous, upscale luggage

Everyone has their own luggage preference, and I happen to be a Rimowa fan. I’ve taken my bag around the world more than once! The quality of Rimowa is outstanding, and the bag is incredibly durable.

All of their bags are solidly made, and you’ll even notice how sturdy and smooth the wheels are when you roll it through the airport or along the street. I’ve been using my Rimowa bag for so long that it’s now been discontinued, but if you’re looking to invest in top quality luggage, you can splurge on this beautiful Rimowa bag (but this brand has many cool options to choose from)!

As a travel writer, I use several different bags, so if you prefer a brand that’s more budget-friendly, try the Samsonite brand, as I also found this one to be very reliable and well-made.  

Kizik shoes (yes, they are totally hands-free!)

One way to make traveling easier is to wear the right clothing when you’re flying. And when you’re traveling, the best shoes are the easiest and the most stress-free! I recommend the Kizik eco-knit slip-on sneaker because it makes going through airport security just a little easier!

I often get asked about my favorite travel hacks. Believe it or not, my favorite, low-cost item to share is a simple black sheet. I use it all the time, especially for road trips. You just throw it over all your items in the back seat of your car or SUV and watch them disappear!

The “black sheet” is a budget-friendly trick that works for your home or apartment while you are away. If you have items visible from the window, toss the sheet on top. This also works for hotel rooms. You can just cover your suitcases to keep your stuff “out of sight.” It’s an easy fix, it’s light and works surprisingly well! A truly life-changing product!

The Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is an expansive beachfront resort and the second-largest on the island of Maui. Located on the southwestern coast’s golden crescent of sand in the upscale Wailea neighborhood, the resort is emblematic of a picture-perfect Hawaiian getaway. Sprawling, tropical gardens, meandering pathways, a wedding chapel, several swimming pools, bubbling fountains, beach access, a massive spa, multiple restaurants, and more all curate an idyllic escape. 

As a frequent Hawaii visitor, I’ve been to the islands multiple times over the years for vacation, business trips, my own honeymoon, and a friend’s wedding. And whenever I find myself on Maui, I always choose the Grand Wailea. Renowned for housing the largest private art collection in Hawaii with sculptures, paintings, and other artifacts, the resort is ideal for the well-heeled set seeking a luxury vacation, while still being welcoming to families. The luxe Waldorf property is a member of Hilton Worldwide, offering brand loyalists the chance to earn and redeem points in this resort with a coveted beachfront locale.

There’s so much to discover, it can be fun to get lost wandering around the grounds — as long as you don’t mind all the walking. With a large resort of this size, there can be plenty of that. 

Rooms vary from standard garden view varieties to mid-tier oven view offerings, and even multi-bedroom villas. Due to the size of this property, there’s constant upkeep and refurbishment required. At all times, there always seems to be an area under renovation or in the midst of a refresh.

I recently stayed in a Deluxe Ocean View room, comped for review, but starts at $750 per night, plus tax and a resort fee. While in line with other luxury Hawaiian hotels, it’s far from cheap, and the kind of worthy splurge you’ll only make once in a while. But when you do, it promises to feel worth it.

There’s no place in Hawaii quite like the Grand Wailea thanks to its incredible first impression.

The stately, breezy main entrance leads to an outdoor, white stone lobby, where I was given a flower lei, a tropical welcome cocktail, and warmly greeted by a resort representative who ushered me to the front desk for check-in.

As I’ve stayed at this hotel a few times over the years, I’ve found that this process usually takes several minutes. The resort is massive and the check-in attendant provides an unhurried and thorough introduction to the property, giving an overview of its multiple restaurants, pools, spa, etc. The hotel is comprised of several buildings, so guests are also shown the location of their room and a few key sights on a small paper map. I was prepared for this, but keep it in mind if you’re arriving with significant jet lag and encounter a queue.

Despite the laidback tropical ambiance, this hotel gets busy, and it’s not unusual to see large groups of families or business professionals gathering for celebrations or corporate events. Thankfully, the crowds can’t manage to dilute the picturesque feeling, and the property is so large, I’ve always been able to enjoy my own space among the natural beauty of the gardens and beach.

The rooms at the Grand Wailea are well-appointed and tasteful, and each has a lanai, or, private balcony. 

On my recent visit, I stayed in the mid-tier Deluxe Ocean View room, which was comped for review purposes but typically starts around $750 per night.

This 640-square foot-room category was recently renovated and designed simply with wood floors, minimalist furnishings and a neutral color palette with splashes of seafoam green. The room itself was not lavish but felt streamlined, updated, and comfortable in terms of size and decor. Unlike most island properties, the look felt Scandi modern rather than the overt Hawaiian look more typically seen.

I found the bed to be on the firm side, which I personally prefer and slept well. When I’m in Hawaii, I usually wake up pre-dawn the first few days due to the time difference and enjoyed watching the sunrise from the room’s lanai, which was spacious with comfortable seating for two on cushioned reclining chairs separated by a wooden table. The stunning view overlooked the lush gardens and the ocean waves beyond.

The room also had a desk with two chairs situated close to the lanai, and I found it delightful to have a view while catching up on work. I travel with several electronic devices and was relieved to find the room’s technology up-to-date, with plenty of electrical outlets, and fast Wi-Fi. 

The room also had a mini-refrigerator, coffee maker, 55-inch flat-screen TVs, and a sizable closet with robes and slippers.

The well-lit bathroom was spacious with an abundance of counter space, excellent lighting, and an oversized glass-walled shower and a separate soaking tub. Although the bathroom was sizeable, and could easily be used as a changing room, it wasn’t renovated. Though the extra space certainly made up for the lack of updates, and I enjoyed the honey mango scented bath products from the on-site Spa Grande.

I enjoyed room perks such as excellent housekeeping and nightly turn-down service, though I did struggle with personalized service at such a large hotel. For example, when I tried to call the front desk for a question, I had to listen to a lengthy recording and it was a challenge to actually reach a live person.

Additionally, be prepared to get your steps in. Since the property is so spread out, and the rooms are as well, it was about at least a seven-minute walk to the lobby, and about the same distance to the pool. And with the meandering garden pathways, there’s no quick access to the beach. 

If you’d prefer slightly cheaper accommodations, the Deluxe designation is only a slight upgrade over regular Ocean View rooms, in that they’re located on higher floors. Most rooms are situated on a diagonal to provide full or partial ocean views so choosing standard Ocean View is hardly a compromise.

The lowest-priced standard room is a Deluxe King or Queen Garden View, which similarly, only differs in view. It starts at approximately $651 per night, so if you don’t mind sacrificing a view of the ocean, it’s a good way to save $100 nightly, while still enjoying a vantage point over the beautiful landscaping.

A unique luxury property that’s considered one of the top resorts in Hawaii, Grand Wailea won’t come cheap, especially for an ocean view room. But for the overall experience and ambiance, I would happily pay these room rates to stay at such a magnificent resort. 

The Grand Wailea features such an incredible number of amenities that you really don’t need to leave the property. As such, a daily resort fee of $45 is added to each room per night and covers a variety of guest-only amenities and activities. Valet parking costs an additional $40, plus tax, per day, and self-parking is not available.

There are several pools, including the Wailea Canyon pool, an aquatic dream for families and kids. It’s over 2,000 feet long and features nine connected pools on six levels, surrounded by tropical foliage. There are several large and small water slides, three hot tubs, six waterfalls, rope bridges, swings, a “water elevator,” and a baby pool as well.

Adults are also welcome to enjoy the family pool area. My splash down the network of water slides took almost 30 minutes that included floating under waterfalls and down lazy rivers.

But when it was time to relax, I preferred the 5,000-foot-long Hibiscus Pool, which felt less frenetic and offered a lovely space to enjoy the afternoon. Due to the resort’s large size, I found lounge chairs readily available and attendants to help set them up, though private cabanas are available to rent as well.

The resort’s Spa Grande also should not be missed. The largest spa in Hawaii at 50,000 square feet, it features 40 treatment rooms and an extensive menu of services. Their one-of-a-kind “Healing Waters of Maui” hydrotherapy circuit is an oasis of waterfalls, saunas, and several specialty baths.

There’s also a large, modern fitness center with workout machines and a selection of weights. I never found it crowded, likely because there are so many other outdoor activities to try. 

The Grand Wailea features several restaurants and bars across the property at different price points.

The most impressive is Humuhumu, a beautifully-designed fine dining rustic outdoor restaurant on the resort’s lagoon with stellar ocean views. It’s known for a romantic ambiance and the menu showcases farm-to-table, delectable Polynesian cuisine with a large selection of freshly-caught seafood. Sunsets are especially dazzling here. I suggest asking for a table by the water if you want the most optimal vantage point.

Taking the reins at a newly-reinvented restaurant was another great adventure in the life of chef Isabelle “Bella” Toland, who loves blending flavors and creating imaginative dishes. In early 2019, she took on the role as Executive Chef at the Banyan Tree restaurant, a stunning destination located in the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Maui.

Here, she combines cultures and inspiring ingredients, serving beautifully-presented specialties in this open-air restaurant that overlooks the Pacific Ocean on the Hawaiian island’s northwestern shore.

Just months ago, while in the midst of a complete refurbishment from top to bottom, including most of the design and décor, Toland joined this legendary eatery with enthusiasm. And she began to work with the team to redesign the menu to match the ambiance of this restaurant with exceptional ocean and beach views.

This visually impressive indoor-outdoor, casual-yet-refined restaurant features seating for over 100 guests, a lanai, fire pits and poolside dining. In addition, the full bar serves up craft cocktails and features an extensive wine list.

Toland’s career has been on an upswing from the start. Although she’s in her early 30s, she’s had a great deal of experience working in a number of locations across the United States.

After graduating from the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in Hyde Park, New York in 2007, she honed her culinary skills at several noteworthy establishments, including the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group (in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Maui). She was also the executive chef at Travaasa, a luxury resort in the town of Hana on Maui, until last year.

She explained, “It’s significant to be chosen as chef of the newly-redesigned Banyan Tree because we’re changing everyone’s perception of what a restaurant should be, and creating an experience that can change and be molded into anything. We have plans to really dig deeper and allow ourselves to create and play with ingredients.”

At Banyan Tree, she spent the first few months tirelessly developing the menu, making dishes again and again for testing. She revealed, “At first, we came up with a menu that was double the size it is now and then we worked as a team to narrow it down to the favorites.”

The result? The new menu at Banyan Tree showcases the flavors of Hawaii, as well as other cultures found on the islands, such as Japanese and Filipino. Some of these creations are unique twists on dishes that chef Toland enjoyed while growing up.

Although she’s lived in Hawaii for over ten years, she was born in Bordeaux, France and raised in Manila in the Philippines, which influenced her French-Filipino cooking style. As a teen, she spent a great deal of time on the Big Island of Hawaii, as her father settled there.

Toland believes in life balance and has a host of hobbies outside of the kitchen. As an avid diver and ocean-lover, she is drawn to adventure. In fact, she and her husband trekked to Mount Everest’s base camp a few years ago. So, when creating dishes for the new menu, she intended for the recipes to have a somewhat adventurous spirit.

She focused on including unfamiliar ingredients to encourage guests to try something new and different. A few of these include annatto seed, Palabok noodles (thick cornstarch noodles) and fermented black beans.

Although she uses as many local ingredients as possible and enjoys working with the island’s farmers, she was able to harness a few flavors that inspired her from Nepal, as she became fascinated by the nuanced spices that can transform the same dish.

She explained, “While in Nepal for over twenty days, we ate the same dish every day – and it tasted completely different and was so delicious. That’s because every family makes their curry differently – and every tea house makes their tea differently.”

This philosophy is apparent in her chimichurri, in which she adds grilled herbs. “Most chimichurri dishes are made with parsley, onion, garlic and red wine vinegar,” she says. “Ours is slightly different and features green onions, tarragon, lemon, orange and some vinegar.”

The Banyan Tree menu showcases a wide array of options, including island-style ceviche, mahi-mahi and meat dishes as well.

A few of Toland’s personal Banyan Tree menu favorites include the braised octopus salad, accompanied by pounded taro root, carrots, radish and finger limes; tomato salad, made with house ricotta cheese from the local Surfing Goat Dairy, as well as avocado, papaya, Maui onion, basil and lemon; and the seafood pot (for two). This features spicy-coconut broth, with the fresh catch of the day, lobster, shrimp, Bihon noodles and fresh herbs.

Although she admits she’s a big fan of Filipino street food, she says that her cooking has evolved into a rustic style over the years. “I want our guests to really taste the vegetables that they eat. I want them to imagine where it’s from and how it ended up on the plate.”

For dessert, her moist and chewy bibingka cake has quickly become a fan favorite. She also created a distinctive tea that was inspired by her Nepalese travels, made with ginger, turmeric, mint, honey and lemon.

When asked about her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated industry, she simply replied, “I’ve always had a hard time answering that question. As proud I am to be a woman, I’m just a chef. Today, it’s all about the equality. Women can hustle – and we can do anything.”

Not one to turn down a challenge, she’s always seeking to introduce guests to new flavors and tastes. She explained, “I’m most proud when I can create a dish that changes someone’s views on food. I am most motivated, for example, if you told me that you hate mushrooms. I will then create a dish that will make you love mushrooms. I believe that all food is great when prepared properly.

Growing from a collection of beachside bungalows in 1917 to an elegant, VIP-favorite resort set on a prime stretch of Waikiki Beach, Halekulani has helped define luxury in Honolulu for decades. For 30 of those years, the ownership of the resort has also overseen the Waikiki Parc Hotel across the street, a more modest offering that lived in the shadow of its famous sister. Now, following a year-long, multi-million-dollar renovation, that property has been transformed into Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani—a boutique-style spot fueled by the luxury expertise of the Halekulani brand.

Officially opened on October 25, Halepuna Waikiki fills what the ownership saw as void in the Honolulu hotel landscape. With all the “recent and ongoing hotel renovations and redevelopment (in the city), it was an optimal time for the Halekulani brand to introduce the first and newest luxury boutique concept to Waikiki,” says Julie Arigo, General Manager of the Halepuna. “By including ‘Halekulani’ in the Halepuna Waikiki name, our owners made a commitment to ensure that the new hotel would (be deserving) of the reputation.”

As such, guests familiar with the Halekulani can expect the same high-end touches here. Designed by noted New York City-based firm Champalimaud Design, Halepuna (which translates to “house of welcoming waters”) greets you with an airy, light-filled lobby featuring a contemporary art collection commissioned exclusively for the property. The 284 rooms are awash in neutral colors, wood tones and high-tech touches like Toto Washlets, as well as soaring windows framing spectacular ocean views; many also have balconies, while the four suites have enough space to accommodate in-room spa treatments. Keen attention to detail is reflected throughout; guests will appreciate the speedy elevators, for example, which are a rarity in Waikiki.

The hotel’s serene focal point is the expansive 8^th floor “urban escape,” home to a 72-foot infinity-edge pool, hot tub, cabanas, a bar, and a garden with a unique reflexology path—all backed by panoramic views. Nearby is spacious fitness center that includes a generously-sized lanai, while the street-level features Halekulani Bakery and Restaurant, an all-day dining hub specializing in housemade artisan baked goods and sweets (there’s even a chocolate-making viewing window) and dishes crafted with locally-sourced ingredients. Most importantly, all spaces are attended to by a staff that gets the new philosophy. As Arigo notes, approximately 85 percent of the staff of the former Waikiki Parc Hotel were trained on the Halekulani service standards during the closure, and have now returned to showcase those elevated skills here.

From casual to exclusive, these 10 restaurants feature some inventive, “must-try” dishes on the island of Oahu.

EATING HOUSE 1849

TRY: PLANTATION-STYLE PAELLA 

This specialty is a fusion of classic paella and Roy Yamaguchi’s grandfather’s tomato-based stew. The base of this savory rice dish is an aromatic chicken, lobster and clam stock reduction and features local Portuguese sausage, Kauai shrimp and saffron spice.

Yamaguchi’s grandfather was a Maui plantation worker in the early 1900s and later opened a tavern where he served a signature beef stew.

Roy Yamaguchi explained, “When I was growing up, my father would recreate my grandfather’s beef stew. When we opened Eating House 1849, I wanted to take the same approach and turn the Spanish paella dish into the Plantation-Style Paella, which reminded me of the stew created by my grandfather. It’s the memories of my past that inspired the paella dish and the origin of our Eating House concept.”

Delia Romano is the executive sous chef of The Reef Bar & Market Grill at the legendary Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. As a vegan, she has added a variety of specialties to the menu, including vegan “scallops.”

Made with seared local ali’i mushrooms that are infused with fresh herbs and Hawaiian sea salt, this dish is paired with a minted lemon pea puree, roasted red pepper coulis, and garnished with toasted macadamia nuts. It’s accompanied by cherry tomatoes and arugula tossed in house white balsamic vinaigrette.

Romano said, “The texture of the mushrooms gives the sensation of eating a scallop, while keeping it strictly plant-based. The brightness of the pea puree and the tartness of the arugula round out the dish. Having a venue literally on the beach and being vegan was my inspiration for this vegan “fish” dish. You get the illusion of eating scallops, but you’re really dining on delicious produce from the island.”

Merriman’s Honolulu

The tableside poke at Merriman’s restaurant is an exceptional experience, so there’s no surprise that it’s one of the most popular dishes at Merriman’s Honolulu, where they sell about 700 orders monthly.

All of the ingredients are rolled out to the table atop a cart. The server asks about taste preferences and expertly prepares the fresh poke in front of you. Featuring sashimi grade ahi, options for this dish include avocado, sliced chives, Maui onion, ogo (Hawaiian seaweed), jalapeno, chili flakes and poke sauce. It’s served with house-made taro chips.

Chef and owner Peter Merriman says, “We apply our minimalist approach and keep the flavors clean and simple, so the customer can taste the great quality of fish. Making this dish tableside allows the guest to select exactly how poke is prepared. Everybody in Hawaii has an opinion on how poke should be made, and this way, they get to have input on their own version.”

Senia

Known for their exceptional culinary creations, award-winning chefs/owners Chris Kajioka and Anthony Rush previously worked together at the legendary restaurant Per Se in New York. But Senia is a whole a new scene, offering a charred cabbage specialty. It’s a complex and flavorful dish that combines slow-cooked cabbage, shio kombu (seasoned kelp), moringa powder, green goddess dressing and buttermilk gel.

Oahu resident Melissa Chang is a food blogger at FrolicHawaii.com and an expert on the Hawaii dining scene. She said, “One of my favorite dishes is the cabbage at Senia. Everything they serve is exquisite, but this one unusual-looking dish is what people talk about. If you close your eyes, you might not even be able to tell if it’s a vegetable, because the layers of flavor create different illusions in your mouth with every bite…this dish is a testament to the chef/owners’ creativity.”

Sushi Sho

When Edomae sushi master Keiji Nakazawa opened his first Sushi Sho location outside of Japan at The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach in 2016, he used the islands’ cuisine as inspiration for his menu at this exclusive 10-seat restaurant. One of his favorite dishes was Hawaiian Lau Lau, which is traditionally made with pork.

In chef Nakazawa’s adaptation, he steams Copper River salmon and opah cheek, and serves it with tosazu gelée made of vinegar, katsuo dashi stock and soy sauce. These two-bite pieces are accompanied by yuzukosho (salted yuzu peel and chili pepper paste), asparagus and taro.

Chef Nakazawa stated, “I have so much respect for Hawaiian culture and traditions and wanted to use local ingredients to create something new, using the Edomae technique.”

Hoku’s

The culinary experience at Hoku’s restaurant at the Kahala Hotel & Resort on Oahu is as impressive as the stunning panoramic ocean views from the soaring dining room windows. The Kona Kampachi Carpaccio is a refreshing and flavorful dish that showcases farm-raised Kampachi from the coast of Kona (the Big Island).

It combines acidic moringa chimichurri and moringa salt, accented with slices of sweet local onions and slivers of chile peppers, which add a heated crunch. Garnished with local micro greens and flowers, it’s then dusted with moringa salt.

Hoku’s Chef de Cuisine, Eric Oto says, “While moringa, also known as kalamungay, has been used in Filipino cooking in Hawaii for generations, it is recently gaining popularity as a ‘super green’ with many health benefits. This dish serves as a delicious introduction to this superfood.”

The Pig and the Lady

The Pig and the Lady‘s Hanoi Style Fish and Poi features the catch of the day that’s marinated with turmeric and served with pickled ogo, dill, scallion, day-old poi and chilled rice vermicelli. The fresh poi is added into the fermented shrimp. Owner and chef Andrew Le added, “This helps give the sauce a silky and fuller mouthfeel along with the slight tang from the day-old poi.”

Le continued, “This dish’s inspiration came from our time in Hanoi and eating the city’s iconic cha ca Hanoi, which is turmeric catfish grilled with dill and a funky fermented shrimp or anchovy sauce. Being from Hawaii, we wondered what was our iconic fish dish. Then we realized it was the classic pairing of fish (raw, grilled or fried) and poi.”

Situated on the harbor, the bustling Nico’s Pier 38 offers a rare dockside dining experience on Oahu with picturesque waterfront views in a laid-back indoor/outdoor setting. Especially popular at sunset, Nico’s is the real deal.

The menu’s extensive seafood options are fresh-caught daily specialties from local fishermen. Food lovers keep returning for the signature ahi ribs, a fried specialty that is accompanied by a house-made spicy sauce.

Long-time Oahu resident and self-proclaimed foodie, Izah Blue says, “I always order the ahi ribs because they’re truly flavorful and so incredibly tender. Chef Michelle Karr-Ueoka’s Tropical Fruit Creamsicle Brûlée has become a signature dessert at MW Restaurant in Honolulu. This delightfully sweet and creamy specialty features Haupia tapioca, tropical fresh fruit, lilikoi sorbet and custard, topped off with a thin, crunchy brûlée.

Karr-Ueoka said, “Growing up, I loved eating creme brûlée, but my favorite part was the top because it was crispy. I wanted to re-create a healthier top that wasn’t just sugar. I love a variety of textures and flavors in dessert, so I wanted to create a unique twist on the classic. Haupia tapioca was my version of the Filipino dessert halo-halo, and then I added lilikoi kanten, which is my tribute to gummy bears, which happen to be my favorite candy.”

Hawaiian Aroma Caffe

Hawaiian Aroma Caffe at Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger hotel is a funky, light-filled surf-style eatery that serves up an array of casual fare, along with a variety of coffee beverages. One of their top-sellers is the Waikiki Ono (delicious) French Toast.

Light and fluffy on the inside, this French toast is golden and crispy on the outside. Topped with fresh berries, powdered sugar and maple sauce, this dish is made with locally-baked Okinawan sweet potato brioche that’s soaked in Big Island Dairy’s whole milk, organic eggs, a sprinkle of cinnamon and a dash of island-grown vanilla.

Founder and CEO, Jonathan Rotmensch, says this French toast was inspired by Waikiki itself, as it integrates numerous cultures and lifestyles into one plate. He suggests, “I recommend adding some cream cheese and bacon on top. And for those who’d like to catapult the dish to a whole other level, we also suggest a drizzle of condensed milk.”

The Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa is in the midst of the room-remodeling phase of a major multiyear, propertywide overhaul.

The public areas, including the lobby and event spaces, were redone in a $22 million project that was unveiled in February 2016. Work is underway on the Kealohilani Tower, with all 655 rooms expected to be completed by the end of summer. 

Next, work will begin on the 655 Paoakalani Tower accommodations, and the whole project is expected to be completed before the December holiday season. 

“This is a complete transformation of the guestrooms,” said general manager Thomas Foti, who came onboard in March. “This is not a renovation or refresh. The rooms will look nothing like what they looked like before.”

The remodeled rooms were designed by Creative Resource Associates’ Bianca Yih, who was inspired by the Waikiki Beach Boys, the resort area’s ambassadors who greet visitors and share their knowledge of the Islands and ocean sports. 

“The Beach Boys of Waikiki were welcoming,” Foti said. “They teach you how to surf, how to paddle an outrigger, maybe share stories about [Hawaiian surfing legend] Duke Kahanamoku. It was informal but a big part of the tourist experience back in the day. They’d take you in and immediately make you feel comfortable.”

From the entryways to the bathrooms, everything has been redone. Large closets have been installed by the door, and a coffee and tea station has been added. There are painted wood panels throughout the guestrooms. The walls are painted in soft tones, and there is a three-dimensional art piece over the beds representing a coral reef. 

“With the rooms, we wanted to impart a sense of place that didn’t exist previously,” Foti said. “With Waikiki, you want to know you’re at the beach, you want to know you’re at the ocean. We wanted it to feel like a bedroom in a residence on the beach more than a hotel room at the beach.”

There will be 55-inch TVs in the rooms, each of which has a balcony. Rooms with king beds will include glass-enclosed showers, and all of the bathrooms are being redone with new vanities and improved lighting. 

“We’ve added a few things to give more of a sense of a residence and spaciousness,” Foti said. “It’s a fresh, vibrant color palette that reflects being at the beach, the ocean. We have a lot more electrical outlets and functionality with personal technology, so there is everything you would need for a leisure trip or to stay productive on a business trip. We’ve tried to be sensitive to all types of travelers with the new design.”

When the overhaul is complete, Marriott will have invested roughly $100 million in the property, Foti said. 

“This is all part of a reinvestment in the property that started with the renovations of the lobby and meeting spaces. There is more to come after the room updates, but we aren’t quite ready to talk about it yet,” he added.

In 2016, the resort unveiled the redesigned Nanea Lobby with a carved-wood piece by Hawaiian artist Kaiwi Yoon and remodeled event spaces, including the Kona Moku Ballroom with its glass-blown chandelier and a lanai overlooking a new water feature. The Marriott also opened the Kuhio Beach Grill, a bourbon bar featuring a prime rib buffet, in early 2017. 

“Marriott Waikiki Beach has been a significant property on the Waikiki skyline for many years,” Foti said of the resort, which was built in 1968. “It sits directly across from the beach in a great location, and we will just be looking to flesh things out and build on what we have. We are looking at additional culture activities and augmenting services. We are reinvesting in new training, new uniforming and programming that didn’t exist before to deliver that true resort experience.”

Our small group of six is seated in a wooden dugout canoe, winding our way through the Mogue River’s dense mangrove forest. We are on a 45-minute journey to visit the home of the native Emberá people, an Indigenous tribe that resides in Panama. As the motor purrs and the waterways narrow, fringed by lush foliage and low-hanging branches, our guide points out tropical birds, fish, and other wildlife. Soon, our boat bumps up against the muddy shoreline, where we step onto the slippery banks as we are greeted by the enthusiastic barefoot children who take our hands and lead us to their village.

It’s wonderful when travel expectations are exceeded. This Panama cruise, or rather UnCruise, has many fantastic highlights packed into one week.

Our small, luxurious ship offers plenty of pampering, including massages, gourmet meals, and all-inclusive premium liquor and craft cocktails served up by a pro mixologist. We are treated to a multitude of memorable experiences, including a nine-hour voyage through the Panama Canal while enjoying dinner grilled outdoors by the ship’s chef and narrated by a Panamanian expert. Other UnCruise activities are just as delightful, such as afternoons on tiny, isolated islands surrounded by crystal-clear water and palm trees swaying in the breeze; kayaking along the rivers; and hiking in the forest.

But the highlight of it all has to be the once-in-a-lifetime visit to this primitive village with friendly inhabitants who reside deep in the Darién jungle.

Situated a remote area of the country, the Emberá village is home to a population of about 500 people who live in open-air huts on stilts covered with thatched roofs. The tribe’s history can be traced back hundreds of years, and they have maintained their own language and customs; they usually wear very little clothing, although they were dressed in beads and colorful materials for our visit. This piece of the UnCruise itinerary was specially orchestrated by CEO Dan Blanchard, who visited the Mogue River Emberá village in person about two years ago, where he met with the chief and community members to discuss bringing UnCruise guests here to learn about their culture.

Upon our arrival, we are treated to a welcome ceremony with music and dancing in the centre of the village. As a sudden downpour occurs (it’s the rainy season, after all), the villagers usher us under the main structure and we watch the children play an impromptu soccer game, jumping in the puddles and shrieking happily in the storm.

UnCruise’s Pure Panama itinerary was launched in early 2017 with luxury adventure in mind. The trip, aboard the company’s Safari Voyager, begins in either Panama City or Colon and then crosses the canal. On some days, the ship anchors in coves near the picturesque Guna Yala (San Blas) and Pearl islands, where passengers are shuttled via skiffs to the beach. Here, the crew sets up necessities on shore: paddleboards, kayaks, noodle floats, snorkelling equipment, towels, chairs—along with cold drinks, snacks, and sunblock.

The captain of the Safari Voyager is Kamain Lambertson, an industry veteran. His genuine enthusiasm for the country of Panama is palpable. “We are on one of the very few ships that brings passengers to the tiny islands off the coast to experience those beaches and the native culture,” he says. “The Panama itinerary has a clear focus on the regional culture. On this cruise, you see an autonomous region of Panama that’s been there forever and managed to keep its culture the way it’s been for centuries. It’s really fun and interesting because this cruise gives us a rare glimpse into these remote societies, and we are fortunate to get a little taste of it.”

With so many picturesque and enchanting classic Greek islands to choose from, it can be a bit daunting to select just one charming locale for a getaway. Of the 227 inhabited islands in Greece (of nearly 6,000), these three favorite destinations offer unforgettably authentic yet diverse experiences: Santoríni, Crete and Rhodes.

The sun was about to set, and we hastened our pace along the rocky coastal trail to reach our destination, the scenic town of Oia on Santoríni’s northern tip. My husband and I decided to hike the six miles from Fira that afternoon to see the stunning views of the sun melting into the horizon, a must-do activity on Santoríni. Part of the journey brought us along the narrow, winding footpath and then later along a trail of volcanic soil, past whitewashed homes, churches and other structures topped with iconic cobalt blue domes. Along this cliffside walk, we soaked in the panoramas of the famed caldera, glistening brilliantly in the late-day sunshine.

We arrived at one of the top classic Greek islands, took our place among the assembled crowd facing west and celebrated the end of another day in paradise. If you’re seeking to step into a picture postcard, Santoríni is certainly the place to do it. Visitors can’t get enough of the jaw-dropping sapphire Aegean Sea, and an abundance of hotels and guest houses deliver on the mesmerizing view. It’s no wonder this island casts a spell on those who visit the mythical home of the lost city of Atlantis, it offers pure magic. The southernmost island in the Cyclades lies about 120 miles from the Greek mainland and is known for its legendary vistas and laid-back vibe. Featuring mountainous terrain, everything here is on a slope, with meandering footpaths steep and uneven in places.

As glorious as it is, Santoríni offers more than exceptional views. Visitors can take in cruises to the volcano, snorkeling trips and other water activities. On land one can easily rent a car or hire a local guide for an island tour. Gorgeous beaches (black, white and red sand) abound and range from rustic and remote to busy — such as Perissa and Perivolos — offering chairs, umbrellas, cafés and other facilities. Wine enthusiasts can swing by some of the island’s many wineries for tastings and tours and learn about indigenous grapes such as Assyrtico. History buffs appreciate the ancient Minoan city of Akrotiri and several museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Santoríni.

Exquisite shops line narrow passageways, offering handcrafted jewelry, art and other items. And, of course, food lovers adore the variety of restaurants elevating this island to a gastronomic destination. Specialties include Greek lamb; pork and seafood dishes such as grilled octopus and dorado, the white, flakey, Mediterranean fish; as well as classic moussaka and fresh, locally grown vegetables.

On the island of Crete, the first traveler I met was a British woman reclining on a lounge chair by the swimming pool and reading a book at our boutique beach hotel, Ammos. “You’re only here for a few days?” she asked incredulously, taking pity on my limited vacation time. “We’re staying for six weeks.” I glanced at the waves lapping at the tranquil shore of the Cretan Sea a few steps away and clearly understood why someone would choose this destination for an extended trip. While you can easily spend years exploring Greece’s largest island, Crete houses a number of incredible world-class attractions you can visit within a few well-planned days.

With a rugged coastline and expansive mountain range, the one of the classic Greek islands offers a diverse landscape — including steep gorges and winding rivers — alongside historical sites dating back centuries, such as the ancient palace and ruins of Knossos. Located on the northern coast near Heraklion, the island’s capital, this spellbinding archaeological excavation should not be missed. The heart of Minoan culture thousands of years ago encompasses more than 20,000 acres.

On the western side of the island, Crete’s second-largest seaside city, Chania, features a picturesque Venetian harbor where locals and tourists gather throughout the season. Visitors can dine at a number of lively restaurants and cafés along the water and wander along the narrow, twisting streets, popping in and out of the many boutiques. Those curious about local history are in luck, as Chania boasts a naval museum, archaeological museum and maritime museum. And if you prefer relaxing on the sand and taking a dip in the turquoise sea, nearby beaches are easily accessible and ideally suited for swimming. The medieval port city of Rethymno blends the old and the new with winding streets and a creative vibe, and a multitude of shops offer crafts from local artisans. Meandering around the old town proves delightful, as the diverse architecture features Venetian, Turkish and Greek design. Much like the town itself, Rethymno’s restaurants and bars blend traditional and modern, featuring classic cuisine accented with a stylish ambience. The walled Venetian Fortezza (fortress) perched above the city provides dazzling views from the area’s highest point. Immediately to the east lies a wide, sandy beach complete with lounge chairs, umbrellas and nearby facilities.

Located in southeastern classic Greek islands, the rugged and spellbinding island of Rhodes is the capital of the Dodecanese and was once a major trade hub. With a rich, multicultural history, it’s a haven for design enthusiasts, who can easily see the Roman, Turkish, Greek and Italian influences in the amalgamation of diverse architecture throughout the entire area. Although the island of Rhodes can’t be fully discovered without a car or other mode of transportation, the city of Rhodes proves best explored by walking. In fact, only residents are allowed to drive an auto within the Old Town walls.

It is great fun to get lost in this charming city. With more than 200 unnamed twisting and narrow streets, it offers a prime opportunity to embrace adventure as you wander around the labyrinth of cobble-paved lanes and appealing squares. Arriving in the city provides an authentic and exhilarating experience as well.

Recognized as one of the oldest continuously inhabited medieval cities in Europe, the Old Town welcomes visitors through impressively majestic gates, setting the proverbial stage by offering an invitation to take a step back in time. Strolling along the bustling Street of the Knights, the main drag, visitors have the opportunity to browse an array of shops, pause for a Greek coffee or savor a meal at a neighborhood taverna. Some of the restaurants and cafés offer rooftop dining with stunning views of the sea and port. The city’s top sites include the Palace of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Rhodes (aka Kastello). Refurbished in 1940, this stunning castle features Gothic architecture and houses museums and artifacts unique to Rhodes. The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed in the former Hospital of the Knights, also proves a favorite destination among history lovers.

Visitors can see the harbor entrance, where the famed Colossus of Rhodes statue once stood. This bronze wonder of the ancient world fell during an earthquake in ancient times. Outside the city you’ll find many gorgeous beaches, quaint villages and ancient sites around the island. A few top attractions include the beautiful village of Lindos and the nearby acropolis dedicated to Athenia Lindia, with its spectacular views of the city and surrounding crystal-blue waters. On the western end, the Valley of the Butterflies nature reserve attracts thousands of fluttering creatures from spring to fall.

And what’s a trip to Rhodes without a beach day? The island’s west side is ideal for wind or kite surfing, while the eastern shores offer an abundance of beaches (with and without facilities) for snorkeling, stand-up paddle surfing or swimming. A few of the more popular are Elli Beach, Kallithea Springs and Anthony Quinn Bay, named after the famous actor who starred in the 1964 film Zorba the Greek and who loved and vacationed on the island.
