As a professional travel writer, Hawaii guidebook writer, and frequent Hawaii visitor, I toured Little Plumeria Farms in June 2023 and have written about it and posted videos about this amazing place in 2024. Featuring 20 acres of orchards with flowering trees, the expansive farm is truly stunning. On my recent visit, I participated in a small-group tour led by the owner (and world-famous surf and shorebreak wave photographer) Clark Little, along with his talented son, Dane.

I was fortunate to be one of the first journalists to visit this beautiful Plumeria Farm after it opened to the public, so it was truly an incredible and exciting experience. I love touring flower gardens in my travels, and I adore tropical plants, so I was very excited to visit this hidden gem of a destination. The Little Plumeria Farm is filled with rare hybrid flowers of every color of the rainbow. As a matter of fact, it’s the world’s largest rare hybrid plumeria farm so it’s certainly a special place. The farm’s sprawling acres of colorful flowering trees feature an extensive array of hues and fragrances.

When I arrived at the farm this summer, a sea of vibrant plumeria blooms greeted me — accompanied by a sweet scent dancing in the warm Hawaiian breeze. The experience is quite spectacular and instantly transports you to a tropical paradise. Therefore, I highly recommend visiting here on your next Hawaii trip!

Where is Little Plumeria Farms located?

Located on Oahu’s North Shore, in the laid-back surf town of Haleiwa, this legendary, family-run plumeria farm is a must-visit destination. Although it opened in 1973, the family recently opened it to the public for the first time in May 2023. So, it’s still considered a hidden gem because they only host a limited number of visitors each season.

Little Plumeria Farms was originally started by Clark’s dad, Jim Little, a half-century ago. The farm today is operated by all three generations of his family – Jim, Clark, and Clark’s son, Dane.  

Little Plumeria Farms is an enchanting and peaceful tropical paradise that feels far away from the rest of the island. It’s truly a beautiful sensory experience to stroll around the rarest plumeria trees in the world. Guests learn all about the flowers, how they grow, and how they are named.

Jim and the family members created cool names for the flowers, such as Hawaiian Rose, JL Metalica, Kimo, and Hurricane — to name a few. Since the tour is run by the owners, you’ll also hear fascinating stories about the family’s farm.

What’s so special about Plumeria flowers (and Little Plumeria Farms)?

This incredibly gorgeous flower farm is home to the largest collection of rare hybrid plumerias on earth. So if you are an avid gardener or interested in flowers, please add this to your “not to miss” list. Most of these hybrid blooms and were developed by Jim Little and his exceptional talent for hybridizing plumeria flowers.

What are plumeria flowers?

Plumeria are beautiful tropical flowers that are also called Frangipani. They are grown on small trees and come in a multitude of colors and unlimited shades — including bright pink, yellows, corals, reds, and purples. The fragrance of each color varies and often ranges wildly.

The flowers were originally brought to Hawaii in the late 1800s by Dr. William Hillebrand. Most species are deciduous, and they shed their leaves during the winter. In Hawaii, you will see these flowers growing everywhere, as they are part of the islands’ natural landscape! They are a favorite tree at large resorts, and you’ll also see them lining the streets and surrounding homes and schools. The flowers are used to make beautiful and elaborate leis of all colors and designs.

My exploration of Little Plumeria Farms was delightful, with every step revealing a new facet of the island’s natural beauty. The well-maintained trees and gardens showcase the many varieties of iconic plumeria. These exceptional trees surround you in brilliant colors and you simply can’t take your eyes off them. Everywhere you look is a different shade of blossom.

Visiting the Little Plumeria Farm on a tour

My tour of Little Plumeria Farms began a few miles away — at the North Shore Macadamia Nut Company, a rustic shop. It’s filled with fresh and delicious macadamia nuts! (And much more)! Visitors to the Little Plumeria Farms must park in the lot adjacent to the store in order to meet the shuttle vans that transport small groups of guests onto the farmland.

For this excursion, I was with my husband, Chris, and dear friend Bonnie, who lives on Oahu and drove us to the north shore that day. We had arrived early, so we spent some time shopping for macadamia nuts at the fantastic North Shore Macadamia Nut Company. Of course, we purchased several bags to bring home. This shop is overflowing with local food specialties and should not be overlooked.

The nuts are grown locally at Kamanui Orchard, considered Oahu’s top macadamia farm. Situated on the foothills of Mount Kaala (the island’s tallest peak at over 4,000 feet high), the farm encompasses 24 acres of land with over 1,700 nut trees.  

We had a lot of fun browsing this family-run indoor-outdoor shop. In addition to macadamia nuts in a variety of flavors, this store also sells plenty of local food products that are suitable for unique and thoughtful gifts. 

How does the farm tour start?

When the Plumeria tour shuttles arrived in the parking lot, our group of about 15 people gathered together by the white vans clearly marked with Little Plumeria Farms on the sides. We checked in with the friendly driver, a staff member from the farm.

The ride to Little Plumeria Farms is rather quick. It’s easy to see you’re heading into a secluded and private property as gates are opened for the shuttles to enter. After heading up a dirt road lined with plumeria trees, visitors arrive at the main center of the farm that features a tiny gift shop and a restroom area.

When we arrived, we realized right away that the Littles are a lovely, knowledgeable family who are completely passionate about plumerias. Our tour was led by Clark Little and his son, Dane. Both are professional gardeners and have in-depth knowledge of the farm. They have worked on the farm for many years — and know everything there is to know about plumerias.

They also love to share the farm’s history and explain the significance of plumeria in Hawaiian culture.

Touring Little Plumeria Farms

The tour is casual, fun, and interesting. Our enthusiastic group followed the Littles and their staff members down a path to the nursery, then through the peaceful orchards filled with plumeria trees, each one bursting with beautiful blooms.

Clark and Dane are very friendly and engaging. They encouraged the group to wander around and ask questions along the way. The Littles point out several different types of flowers, explaining how they are cultivated and cross-pollinated. Visitors have the chance to examine and admire each flower’s distinctive characteristics and to sniff the lovely tropical fragrances (and it was impressive how different the scents are).

The Littles gave us paper bags so we could pick as many flowers as wanted. Everyone is involved in picking flowers, taking photos, and asking our hosts many questions about the flowers and farm. (You can purchase thread later in the gift shop if you’d like to make a lei from the flowers you pick)!

Clark offered a lot of fascinating information during the tour. He says there are over a thousand plumeria seeds planted in the nursery and added, “There are 5,000 plumeria trees planted in the ground here, which include hundreds of different varieties — soon to be thousands.” All three generations are working to propagate the flowers and keep the legacy going.

In addition to the flowers, the views from the farm are amazing, and you can see mountains and the Pacific Ocean beyond the orchards. During the tour, guests visit the plumeria nursery area and are invited to stroll around the farm’s rare hybrid plumeria garden, with unique, cross-pollinated species named for family members.

There are plenty of opportunities for capturing memories through gorgeous photography here! Some guests had high-end photo equipment and spent time photographing the flowers and the natural surroundings. Others were gardeners and asked the family members specific questions about cultivation and suggestions on how to grow the flowers properly in other regions.

What Flowers can I buy at Little Plumeria Farms?

Yes, there’s a gift shop at Little Plumeria Farms! If you are a gardener or someone who has even a slight interest in gardening (or an appreciation of tropical flowers), I encourage you to purchase seeds or a cutting here. It’s the ultimate souvenir from your visit. This magical plumeria farm is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am sure you will want to bring home a tiny piece of it – in the form of a plumeria plant, of course!

You can purchase several items in the gift shop, including hats, t-shirts, and art pieces that are all related to the farm. I wanted a keepsake from this experience so I purchased a plumeria cutting (which looked like a 12” inch wooden stalk) for about $35 dollars. Also, I purchased a small packet of seeds. The experts in the shop packed my purchases properly. They carefully placed the cuttings and seeds in plastic with the proper tags affixed to them. (These items must be certified by the Department of Agriculture for travelers to take aboard an airplane).

Purchasing plumeria cuttings and seeds: My experience

I brought the cuttings and seeds home with me to New Jersey, USA about 5,000 miles away from Hawaii (and not a tropical location).

After I arrived home in mid-June of 2023, I was so excited to plant them! I planted the cutting and the seeds in different pots, according to instructions. I kept them outside on a sunny patio all summer and watered them generously. They grew like crazy! I think these are the fastest-growing plants I have ever seen. Currently, my plumeria cutting is now very large (see photo of me). It transformed into a thriving plant with many large green leaves. (The seeds I planted also grew very quickly and are almost as large).

I was shocked when so many sprouts popped up after one week! I had so many seedlings that I gave two plants to my sister and two others to my mother — and still have several fast-growing plants. However, I have not yet had any flowers but I’m hoping to see a bloom over the next year. At the end of the summer, I moved them inside our sunroom, so I’m looking forward to seeing some blooms in the spring (hopefully)!

The leaves are supposed to drop off in the winter, but so far, my plants still have their leaves.

Update – After my visit to the Plumeria farm two years ago, my plumerias are still growing incredibly well! I’m always excited to see these beautiful blooms. I still move it inside in the winter, of course, because we live in New Jersey. (But so far, so good)!

How to have the best visit to Little Plumeria Farms

• Book your tour in advance. This tour sells out quickly! Also, don’t wait until you get to Hawaii to reserve your spot.  

• Where to go for the tour: Currently, the plumeria farm staff picks up guests for the tour in the parking lot of the nearby Macadamia Nut Company. The farm is a great place to spend a few minutes browsing and purchasing a variety of macadamia nuts. Take a stroll around the store and buy a few local gifts for yourself (and some to take home).

• What to wear: Wear a sun hat with a wide brim and comfortable shoes (sneakers or hiking boots are best). The plumeria farm, is well, true working farm and you will be walking on dirt and mud most of the time.

• Bring sunscreen and a water bottle. Do not underestimate the strong Hawaiian sun!

NOTE: There are NOT many hotels close to the Little Plumeria Farm. The closest hotel on the North Shore of Oahu, is the luxury resort, Ritz Carlton Turtle Bay.  

• Where is the farm located? Little Plumeria Farms is on the North Shore of Oahu. It’s across the island from Waikiki, where most of the hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues are located on Oahu. You can easily drive to the farm (about 35 miles / a 50-minute drive, depending on traffic). Be sure to plan your visit around the traffic, which can be quite heavy at times.  You can also make this just one stop on a longer visit to the iconic North Shore of Oahu.  Note: taxis and ubers / rideshares are VERY limited on the North Shore, so be sure you have a ride back into town if you get a ride and don’t drive yourself.

• When are the tours? You can take a Plumeria Farm tour in the morning or afternoon. Please note the exact time when you book your tour. Arrive a few minutes early because guests are transported there via shuttle bus. You will be walking around in bright sunshine and the Hawaiian sun is very hot! You are outdoors on this tour. Although you can stand under the trees for a (little) shade, it’s very hot in the mid-day sun.

• Restrooms: It’s important to note: the restrooms at the Plumeria Farm are more modern (and nicer) than the Macadamia nut store. (Just an FYI). Generally speaking, it’s also not easy to find restrooms on the North Shore. Please keep this in mind as you plan your day.

Tour Prices for Little Plumeria Farms

Guided group tours are about an hour and include picking your own plumeria flowers, so you will have a colorful assortment of blooms when you leave. (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).

I visited Wai Kai on Oahu recently — and I was one of the first mainland writers to spend some time at this exciting new complex. I was thrilled to enjoy a half day at this fabulous new destination. It offers several cool and adrenaline-boosting activities and things to do besides the wave pool. I want to share my personal experience visiting, as well as surfing the wave pool!

The Wai Kai entertainment complex opened on Oahu, Hawaii in early 2023 and it’s a new, exciting, and fun destination featuring Hawaii’s first and only high-tech wave pool, called The Lineup. The Wai Kai wave is the world’s largest deep-water standing surf wave — and certainly something to see. It’s an impressive 100-feet wide, uses state-of-the-art technology and has attracted many surfers (from beginner to the pros) since it first opened. If you love to surf, you must check it out!

In addition to the wave pool, Wai Kai also has several restaurants, and an expansive 52-acre recreational lagoon (with stand-up paddleboards, floating couches, kayaks, and other fun toys). There’s also a stylish gift shop with many locally-made items, and a luxurious, spacious locker room with showers and amenities.

What does Wai Kai mean in the Hawaiian language?

What does “Wai Kai” mean? The name Wai Kai has a lovely Hawaiian meaning that signifies the blending of two waters. The word, “wai,” means “water” (the essence of life) and the word kai, in Hawaiian, refers to the ocean. Therefore, Wai Kai is the place where the Pacific Ocean meets the water from the island’s nearby mountains.

Where is Wai Kai located on Oahu?

The Wai Kai entertainment complex is located in Ewa Beach, which is on the western side of the island of Oahu. The area is much less populated than Honolulu. It’s about 25 miles from Waikiki and is about a 45-minute drive from the city, without traffic.

Wai Kai is located 18 miles from the HNL airport (aka, the Daniel K. Inouye International) airport, and it’s about a 20-minute drive from there. For information and details, visit the Wai Kai website.

How to get to Wai Kai on Oahu?

Wai Kai is located about 25 miles from Waikiki, but it can easily take an hour to reach this destination during busy times, as the island is known for its traffic issues.

Ideally, if you live on Oahu or have a rental car, it’s best to drive there, because you can arrive and leave on your own schedule and not have to deal with a taxi or rideshare.

For my visit, we took a Lyft (rideshare) from Waikiki to the Wai Kai complex around 9 a.m. on a weekday in June and the cost was $80 each way. Since Wai Kai is so far from Honolulu and we needed to be back in the city at a certain time, we reserved a Lyft in advance for the return as well – and we were glad we did. There are not a lot of rideshare drivers hanging around this area, as it’s not as busy as Honolulu.

Important to note…the neighborhood where Wai Kai is located is very residential – you’ll drive past many homes as you approach the entrance. Wai Kai is not near any other tourist attractions that are walkable. It’s not walkable to shops or anything else, although plans are in the works for a future hotel.

Fortunately for us, our Lyft driver who picked us up happened to live on the “West side,” which means he lives close to Wai Kai, but keep in mind this area is not as populated as Honolulu and Waikiki, so rides may not be easy to get.

Does Wai Kai have a shuttle? Yes, Wai Kai also offers a shuttle service from Waikiki. However, the times change depending on the season, and you must get your shuttle reservation / ticket in advance. Look at the website for details and be sure to check their shuttle times and schedule or call Wai Kai directly if you are planning to take the shuttle to the complex.

How to surf the wave pool at Wai Kai (the Line-Up)

Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or expert surfer, Wai Kai is a great place to visit!

I had a fun surfing lesson at Wai Kai – with a very helpful instructor — and highly recommend giving it a try. Here is what to expect!

This video is not my first attempt, as I had a patient instructor helping me at first. (This video was taken by my husband, who stood on the outdoor terrace / platform at the The Lookout restaurant).

After signing up in advance, I was given a locker in the gorgeous, modern women’s locker room. It’s super clean and really feels like a five-star spa with plenty of amenities, so I highly recommend checking it out! I was also given a specific-colored rash guard, which is how they keep track of the surfers in the pool — and your time limit in the pool. (This means that you don’t need to bring your own rashguard).

Wave pool surfers must watch a short safety video that shows participants how the pool works. The instructor will go over the basics, including very specific instructions on what to do (and what not to do), what happens when you fall off your board (which you will!) and how to get up and back in line after you fall. There are several safety precautions to be aware of, so you will learn all of that before stepping into the pool.

Up close, I found the wave pool is much louder (and much larger) than it appears to be. My instructor guided me onto the pool and held my hands as we floated onto the center of the wave. He was fantastic – and gave me exact, step-by-step instructions on where to look where to place my weight, how to move and how to turn. After a few tries with the instructor, I was able to try it myself!

Is Wai Kai worth it?

Is a visit to Wai Kai worth it? Yes, Wai Kai is worth a visit if you are on Oahu and enjoy water activities! Wai Kai has a sprawling, protected lagoon and is also home to the largest wave pool in the world (where you can take a surfing lesson or just sign up for an “open surf”), so it will certainly be a memorable experience!

You’ll have a great experience at Wai Kai! You can take a number of lessons here, such as surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding — if you book in advance. It’s also an excellent place to learn about water safety and get a feel for basics of these sports before you go out in the ocean or try these activities on your own.

It’s a great spot for a group outing as well, as the Wai Kai facility can help you plan some fun group activities for your family, friends or corporate group.

Wai Kai makes everything convenient because you can also enjoy a lunch or dinner here and you don’t need to drive anywhere to find a meal or a snack.

What if you don’t want to get into the wave pool? No worries! And if you choose not to try the wave pool, you can just watch the surfing action from above from the viewing platform at The Lookout bar and restaurant, while enjoying a snack or beverage. This is also the best place for your friends or family members to take video of you as you surf on the wave pool.

Things to do at Wai Kai

Wai Kai has many fun activities in addition to surfing their famous wave pool. Here’s a quick list of the many things to do at Wai Kai:

• The Wai Kai Lagoon is spectacular (with paddleboards, kayaks, paddlebikes, floating cabanas, lessons and more).

• Wai Kai restaurants: You won’t go hungry at Wai Kai because there are three great restaurants here offering “something for everyone” at several price points. These include the Boardwalk Café, the Lookout (above the wave pool) or the Napa Kitchen / Plaza Grill (the most upscale).

• Awesome gift shop with everything from stylish bathing suits to sunblock

Plenty of shade! If you want to kick back and enjoy the scenery or watch your friends, there’s plenty of seating with shade overlooking the lagoon!

• Events almost every day! Check out the schedule on the Wai Kai website for many events that include farmers markets, women-only nights and more.

Is the Wai Kai Lagoon open to the public?

The Wai Kai lagoon is a beautiful destination with over 52 acres of calm inland water, protected from the ocean. It’s a fun destination with a full staff that offers a selection of water activities. These include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), hydro bikes, outrigger canoe rides, pedal-boarding, Duffy boats, paddle boats and more!

You’ll need to go to The Dock at the LineUp when you arrive for your pre-arranged water activities or ideally, it’s best to visit the Wai Kai website to sign up for the lagoon activities in advance.

You can also sign up for lessons for any of the lagoon activities. Note: children must be accompanied by an adult and there are age restrictions, so be sure to confirm this before your visit.

If you don’t want to get wet, there’s also floating cabanas and a dock with comfortable seating where you can watch lagoon activities, enjoy the stunning waterfront views (and maybe sip a coffee or beverage)!

How much does Wai Kai cost?

How much does it cost to visit Wai Kai? Prices at Wai Kai vary, depending upon what you decide to do while you are there! You can visit Wai Kai and just walk around and take a look at the amenities, but here’s a breakdown of prices for possible activities:

Surf the LineUp / Wave Pool: The pricing for Wai Kai changes. Currently on the Wai Kai website, the cost is surf the 100-foot wave for $75 dollars; and the 65-foot wave for $65 dollars (see discount codes)!

First-timers should plan to take a lesson. You can schedule a lesson in advance. It’s $100 for a 45-minute surf lesson. (Be sure to check out special offers and other (non-lesson) surf options on the website.

Lagoon activities: These prices vary and are listed under each activity. It’s $80 for a single kayak.

Locker rentals (recommended) can be arranged in advance and are $5 per visit.

Restaurant prices (these prices vary). You can have a quick coffee or snack at the Boardwalk Café, a lunch at the Lookout (above the wave pool) or an upscale lunch or dinner at the Plaza Grill. We had a delicious seafood lunch outdoors on the terrace overlooking the lagoon at the Plaza Grill.

Things to know before you visit Wai Kai on Oahu

Before you plan to visit or spend the day at Wai Kai, there are a few things you should know:

You’ll need to sign a waiver before participating in any activities. Wai Kai requires a signed waiver, and you can do that electronically. Everything here is age-appropriate, so check on the activities available to children if you are traveling here as a family.

Wai Kai is a busy place! It features events throughout the week and month. They have women’s only nights, farmers’ markets, musical events, night-time paddle events, beer and wine festivals — and other special happenings. Be sure to check if there’s a special event on the day (or evening) you plan to visit.

Check to see if their shuttle bus is running from Waikiki. Wai Kai offers a shuttle bus at certain times, which may vary, depending on the day or time of year. Be sure to check on this when you make your plans.

Dining at Wai Kai

Yes, you can eat at Wai Kai! There are three separate restaurants with lots of options from super-casual to more upscale. So if you decide to spend a full day here, you can sip a morning coffee (or enjoy breakfast) and also have lunch and dinner at Wai Kai. Restaurants and cafes include: The Lookout Food and Drink; Foam Coffee Bar; The WaveBar, Halia By Side Street Inn; and Sidewalk Cafe.

And yes, there’s a very cool gift shop at Wai Kai with an array of fun items — and it sells bathing suits, sunblock, hats, and other water-related items in case you forget to bring your own!

Finally, if you visit Wai Kai, be sure to plan for traffic! Yes, Oahu has a lot of traffic. Before you visit, be aware that rush hour in and out of Honolulu is consistently very busy, so plan for traffic accordingly.

It receives about 25 percent of Hawaii’s visitors and is famous for gorgeous beaches, whale watching during the winter months, and the spectacular sunrises (and sunsets) from its tallest peak, Haleakala.

Shop in Whaler’s Village

On Maui, Kaanapali has excellent beaches – and some great shopping, too. One of the best shopping areas on Maui is Kaanapali’s Whaler’s Village. It’s within walking distance of many oceanfront hotels, has several restaurants (and you can also walk to nearby bars and restaurants) and it’s located on the ocean, so you can stroll along a (paved) walkway when you’re finished shopping.

Take the road to Hana

Most visitors to Maui plan to explore the road to Hana on their visit, as it’s a great way to see fantastic scenic views and waterfalls. But we all know that the Hana Highway is best when someone else is driving! Instead of driving yourself (and possibly missing some of those breathtaking views), take a private tour to Hana tour that includes breakfast and lunch — and let an expert drive, while you sit back, relax and enjoy this incredible ride. This iconic Hawaiian resort is situated on over 60 acres on the Kohola coast – it’s so large it has a very conveient train running through it — to help guests get from one end of this massive property to the other! There are several swimming pools here, a lagoon,  a multitude of awesome restaurants, and several styles of guestrooms and suites. There are plenty of shops, bars, and beachfront activities, too.

On the other side of the island, Hilo offers a completely different, more laid-back vibe than the Kona or Kohala coasts. Maui vs Big Island: Which Is Best For Families?

There are many destinations throughout Hawaii that are excellent for families. After all, as long as you have a great pool and easy beach access, you’ll have a wonderful location. Depending on the ages of your kids and teens, there are more choices to make regarding the best place to stay and the ideal location. Older kids will have more activities available to them.  

Maui For Family Travel

If you’re traveling with children to Maui, you will want to make things easy! And Maui is a great island to plan ahead for family-friendly activities! It’s best to start by choosing the best resort for your kids. Choose a large resort with big, family pools that are convenient for easy family activities such as (for example) the Grand Wailea or the Westin Maui Resort and Spa.  

The Big Island For Family Travel

The Big Island is also a destination where you can bring your family, but it will require a bit more planning. The island is volcanic, so you’ll need to check which beaches offer the soft sand (instead of volcanic rock!) You’ll also be better off with kids at a big, family-friendly resort with a pool and amenities, such as the Manua Kea, Hapuna and Hilton Waikoloa Village (all listed above!) Keep in mind that the the Big Island’s popular activities (such as hiking the volcano, trekking to waterfalls, snorkeling with manta rays, and taking helicopter rides) may be a bit too intense for very young children.

The Family Vacation Winner: Maui! Why Maui? Maui has a wide array of resorts with massive, family-friendly pools and easy beach access. The Big Island has a few as well, but Maui just has more to choose from, and they are located in places where you might not need a car to reach restaurants and stores. As mentioned above, many of The Big Island’s popular activities are more rugged and may be more suitable for older kids and teens.

Maui vs. Big Island: Average Vacation Cost

Travelers to Hawaii agree that Hawaii is expensive, no matter which island you choose!

It’s the most isolated group of islands in the world, and everything needs to be shipped from the US mainland (or elsewhere) and prices for everything are very high. Generally speaking, the cost of traveling to Maui is slightly more expensive than the Big Island, but that depends on the time of year, where you are flying from, how long you will be flying — and which type of accommodations you are choosing.

Airfare from the US mainland fluctuates a bit, but it’s safe to assume airfare from the east coast is about $1,000 to $1,400 for economy seats. A small price to pay for paradise!

Cost of Traveling To Maui

Depending on the time of year, a trip to Maui for two for a week could be approximately $5,000 – $10,000 (without airfare) depending on the resort you choose and the type of restaurants and activities you prefer.

Cost of Traveling To Big Island

Depending on the time of year, a trip to The Big Island of Hawaii for two for a week could be approximately $4,200 – $10,000 (without airfare) depending on the resort you choose and the type of restaurants and activities you prefer.

Hawaii is considered the most popular warm-weather vacation destination in the world, so most travelers would not usually think of snow or winter weather when they envision a Hawaiian getaway. After all, this remote group of sun-soaked islands is located in the South Pacific Ocean, and is known for its stunning beaches, brilliant blue waves and incredible scenery.

However, you may be surprised to learn that it does snow in Hawaii! Each year, winter storm systems cause snow to fall only in the highest elevation areas atop the islands’ tallest volcanoes. These are: The Big Island’s Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa; and the island of Maui’s Haleakala.

Where does it snow in Hawaii?

Yes, you can find snow and ice in Hawaii sometimes…but it’s an uncommon occurrence and you need to know where to look for snowflakes!  

Hawaii has been tracking any snowfalls since they started keeping weather records in 1929. The three volcanic mountains that see snow are all over 10,000 feet above sea level — and only receive snow at certain conditions. Throughout Hawaii, snowflakes are rarely found below 9,000 feet and snow usually melts very quickly.

Obviously, you will not be going on a winter sleigh ride on Hawaii’s gorgeous beaches, with their postcard-perfect views. You also won’t see snowflakes if you take a boat cruise, go surfing, go snorkeling, or explore any of the Hawaiian islands’ coastal areas.

Snow on the Big Island: Mauna Kea

The majestic Mauna Kea is the highest peak in Hawaii at 13,803 feet in elevation. Located on the Big Island, it’s a dormant volcano and it’s not unusual to see the summit coated with snow from a distance. In fact, it’s often referred to as the “White Mountain” by residents, who believe it’s the most sacred of all volcanoes in Hawaii.

If measured from the bottom of the ocean floor, Mauna Kea is also considered the world’s tallest mountain at 33,000 feet. The summit of Mauna Kea is also home to earth’s largest observatory. This volcano last erupted over 4,000 years ago and it’s being closely monitored by the scientific equipment constructed at the top.

Mauna Kea has been receiving about seven inches of snow a year since the mid-20th century, and by the early 1990s, that number has grown to about 18 inches yearly. The snowfall here is expected to continue to increase due to the earth’s climate changing.

Note: Mauna Kea has a visitor’s center with viewing telescopes, but the scientific observatories are not open to the public.   

Snow on the Big Island: Mauna Loa

You’re probably familiar with the Big Island’s Mauna Loa volcano, as it’s been in the news lately for its recent eruptions in November and December 2022.

Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on earth and reaches an elevation of 13,681 feet above sea level. Covering about half of the entire island, Mauna Loa is a massive volcano that earned the nickname “Long mountain.” As the temperature is often below freezing at the summit, the annual snowfall can range from a dusting to several inches.   

However, the roads that lead up to Mauna Loa are not usable, due to the eruptions, so it’s not possible to reach the snow.

Snow on Maui: Haleakala

Reaching just about 10,000 feet high, Maui’s Haleakala volcano is lower in elevation than the two other highest peaks, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, which are located on the Big Island. Haleakala receives less snowfall than the other highest mountains in Hawaii, but if conditions are ideal, you may see snowflakes or a dusting of snow at the top.

The name Haleakala means “House of the sun” and many visitors to Hawaii take a tour that brings them to the summit for sunrise and sunset. Since last eruption was over 400 years ago, it’s considered relatively safe to visit the summit. Since there are paved roads to reach its highest point, you can also drive – and some visitors choose to walk (or bicycle) back down.

Does it snow in Honolulu or on Oahu?

No, it does not snow in the city of Honolulu, so you won’t see a wintry mix if you’re at sea level and hanging out on Waikiki beach. According to news reports, the coldest temperature on record in Honolulu was in 1969 at 52 degrees.

Instead, if you’re on Oahu, you can admire the majestic Diamond Head State Monument, which is an ancient volcano. This legendary landmark can be seen from just about everywhere on Waikiki Beach. You won’t see snow on Diamond Head, but you can hike it for an incredible view above Oahu. (It’s best to do this in the early morning – before sunrise).

The rest of Oahu island does not get any snow, but you can fly to the Big Island or Maui and see snow on Hawaii’s highest peaks.

Does it snow on Maui?

Yes, you can find snow on the beautiful island of Maui, but only at the top of the Haleakala volcano during certain times of the year. Haleakala is one of the major tourist attractions on Maui, and visitors go to the summit every day for sunrise and sunset. Visitors can reach Haleakala via paved roads that lead to the top, and it’s most picturesque at sunrise and sunset.

A major snowstorm hit Haleakala in 1978, which resulted in about eight inches of powder on the summit. Today, it’s considered one of the largest storms in history on that island.

On another area of Maui, the Koolau Gap, is a valley on the island that receives snow on very rare occasions, It’s located between two mountains and is about 3,200 feet above sea level and it’s possible to see a brief snowfall here during unseasonably cold winters.

How often does snow fall in Hawaii?

The highest mountains of Hawaii can receive several inches of snow a few times a year. Snowfall in Hawaii can range from a dusting to a small accumulation that may remain on the ground for a few hours or a few days at a time.

Does Hawaii usually get snow?

Situated in the South Pacific, Hawaii does not usually get snow. However, Hawaii’s highest mountain peaks do receive snow (and sometimes icy conditions) during each winter season, as storms bring in lower temperatures and precipitation.

When did it last snow in Hawaii?

When did snow last fall on Hawaii’s volcanoes? Very recently!

Over the years, Hawaii has received some memorable snowstorms and record-breaking amounts of powder. In 1938, mount Haleakala’s snowfall was over six inches at the peak. Recently, in 2021, Hawaii’s three highest mountains (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Haleakala were all covered in a substantial amount of snow.

According to Hawaii news outlets, December 2022 brought big storms with heavy snow to Mauna Kea with drifts of up to 10 feet.

What months does it snow in Hawaii?

There’s usually a white, fluffy snowfall at least once a year on Hawaii’s highest mountain peaks. You’ll have the best chance of seeing snow atop these volcanos during Hawaii’s winter season, which runs from the months of December through March.

Can you go skiing in Hawaii?

Believe it or not, you can go skiing or snowboarding in Hawaii, as Mauna Kea attracts professional skiers and snowboarders when the snowfall conditions are right. But it’s not a place for casual or beginner skiers and it takes a lot of effort to get there.   It’s important to know there is no ski resort in Hawaii. This means skiers need an ATV vehicle to reach the area of the mountain where skiing is possible. This also means there are no lifts, no equipment rentals and no ski patrol, so skiers are on their own.

Although it may surprise you, Hawaii does get some snow every year at its highest mountain peaks!

For visitors who wish to see a wintry mix while exploring Hawaii, you can see some snow if you plan strategically. As a professional travel writer (and Hawaii lover), I’ve taken many flights to Hawaii from the east coast of the United States on different airlines. In fact, I’ve probably flown to the Hawaiian Islands from east coast airports between 25 and 30 times over the years.

Flights to Hawaii can vary significantly, depending on your chosen airline, which airport you depart from, and which airport you connect through. Generally speaking, it’s at least about 5 or 6 hours to fly to Hawaii from the west coast of the USA; 8 to 10 hours from the midwest and approximately 11 to 12 hours from the east coast.

Some travelers prefer a connection, and sometimes an hour or two is enough to give passengers a quick rest — and time to “stretch your legs.” It’s also an excellent way to get re-energized for the final leg of your flight to paradise!

How long is the flight to Hawaii from California?

For travelers who are based in California, you are very lucky, because you have the shortest distance between the U.S. mainland and the Hawaiian islands. It’s such a short flight, that you can even go for the weekend! On average, the absolute shortest flights from Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SAN) to Hawaii are about six hours non-stop.

There’s really no reason to connect through another California airport on these flights, so be sure to select a flight with the shortest distance and no connections!

Travelers from California also have a large selection of airlines to choose from, which means prices may be lower at times. You may find rates lower than $300 round-trip, depending on the time of year, of course. (Try the Fall season and immediately after the holidays)!

These airlines fly from California airports to Hawaii: American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Delta, Jet Blue, United Airlines and Alaska Airlines.

How long is the flight to Hawaii from New York?

Flying from New York to Hawaii is a full day of travel (over 11 hours) and there’s no way around this.

The good news is that the New York City area has several airports to choose from (JFK, LGA and EWR), so there are a lot of flight choices. Just be sure to choose the ones with the best and easiest connections for you and your plans. There are many airlines that offer one stop connections. Those usually push the travel time to nearly 14 hours.

Or for travelers who want to fly non-stop to Hawaii from New York, your best bet is Delta (from EWR or JFK); and Hawaiian Airlines (from JFK).

How long is the flight to Hawaii from Philadelphia?

Flying to Hawaii from Philadelphia, PA is a long flight and takes about the same time as a flight from New York. Currently, there is no non-stop flight to Hawaii from Philadelphia. However, I have flown frequently from Philadelphia to Hawaii (round trip) and have discovered the best one-stop flights to select.

Personally, as someone who flies to Hawaii a few times a year, I usually fly American Airlines from Philadelphia to Hawaii. Philly is an American Airlines hub, so there are several choices for Hawaii flights. You can connect through PHX (Phoenix), DFW (Dallas), or LAX (Los Angeles).

All of these flights are about 14 or 15 hours in total travel time. Ideally, I like to choose LAX as a connection, if that’s available, as it provides a good balance from the east coast. It makes the final leg a bit shorter, and each flight is about the same length of time.

How long is the flight to Hawaii from Phoenix?

Flying to Hawaii from Phoenix, AZ is another easy flight and I have taken this one frequently. I often connect through PHX to Hawaii when I fly from Philadelphia (PHL).

A non-stop flight from Phoenix to Hawaii is approximately six hours and 45 minutes. (Slightly longer than flying to Hawaii from California). You can find flights on American, Hawaiian Airlines, and Southwest Airlines from PHX (Phoenix).

How long is the flight to Hawaii from Houston?

Flying to Hawaii from Houston, TX is a relatively long flight, about nine hours. There’s only one airline that flies non-stop from Houston to Honolulu, and that’s United. All the other airlines have one and two stops, the shortest being fourteen hours.

Flying to Hawaii from Florida is a very long flight, so be prepared. No matter which Florida airport you choose, there will be a connection necessary, and the shortest flight duration (at the time of this posting) is 12 hours and 46 minutes.

 Depending on the airlines, the connections from Florida will be in the following airports: PHX, SFO or SEA.

How long is the flight to Hawaii from the UK?

The flight to Hawaii from the United Kingdom (UK) is a very long flight. The shortest from Great Britain is about 18 hours (with one stop). For travelers flying from London to Hawaii, it’s a good idea to plan to stop in the United States for a day or two to break up the flight.

No doubt about it – this is a far journey, and most airlines require at least two stops.

How long is the flight to Hawaii from Atlanta?

There are no non-stop flights from Atlanta, GA (ATL) to Hawaii. All flights require a connection from this airport and the shortest travel duration is 12 hours and 34 minutes. The only airlines with only one-stop from ATL are American Airlines and Alaska.

How long is a flight to Hawaii from Virginia?

The state of Virginia is located on the east coast of the United States, and the best airport to fly to Hawaii from is Dulles International (IAD).

Most airlines flying to Hawaii from Dulles require at least one stop, and the shortest flight is over 16 hours. United offers a non-stop and that’s ten hours and 46 minutes.

How long is the flight to Hawaii from Dallas?

Flying from Dallas, Texas (DFW) to Hawaii is not as far as flying from the east coast and you can find some great non-stop flights that will get you there quickly. A non-stop flight on American Airlines to Hawaii from Dallas is about eight hours and 22 minutes.

 If you choose a one-stop connection from Dallas to Hawaii, it will be significantly longer, about ten to 14 hours.

Why is the flight to Hawaii so long?

Hawaii is the most isolated group of islands in the world, and there’s no easy way to reach this incredible piece of paradise. Located in the South Pacific ocean, Hawaii is located 2,000 miles from California (the US Mainland) and nearly 5,000 miles from New York (the eastern seaboard).  You’re also traveling through several time zones to reach Hawaii.

So, no matter which island you choose to visit (Oahu, Maui, Kauai, The Island of Hawaii, Molokai, and Lanai), the flight distance is just about the same.

Although it’s a long flight, many vacationers who love Hawaii believe it’s worth it – and they return again and again! I’m one of those Hawaii fans who agree! Flying from the east coast can be easier if you choose to make a connection for a few hours — or a few days. You can make your flight a lot easier by following some of my tips below.

Tips for long flights

As a frequent traveler to Hawaii, I would love to share some valuable tips with fellow travelers to make their trip easier. One of the most important tips is to be as comfortable as possible. If you can afford to do so, choose a business class or “economy plus” seat. Do your best to avoid the middle seats, naturally. If you prefer the aisle or window, you may have to pay extra on some airlines.

On an airplane, it’s worth it to choose the right seat that will start the trip off right. If you have an aisle seat, you can get up and down easily, go for a quick stroll around the plane, and / or get up to use the restroom without asking anyone to move. If you have a window seat, you’ll have to ask a row of people to move when you need to get up, but you’ll have a great view for most of the flight — and a spectacular view when you reach Hawaii and prepare to land. (So have your phone ready to take some photos and videos)!

Tips for getting around Hawaii

No matter which island you visit, you’ll want to enjoy every minute of your vacation! Portable charger for your smartphone: Pro tip: Most airplanes today have power outlets at the seats, however, they don’t always work, so please bring a portable charger. You’ll be glad you did!

Noise-canceling earbuds or headphones Pro tip: Before you get to the airport for a long flight, download at least 6 hours of your favorite podcasts, a movie or two, and a few audiobooks. Even if you know the airline has wifi or TVs, you never know when a technical problem with this equipment. This happens all the time. And the wifi is not strong flying over the ocean, in most cases.

Sleep mask / Eye mask for sleeping on the airplane: Pro tip: You may need this if you want to sleep!

Slip-on sneakers (Skechers work great)! Slip-on shoes are the most comfortable on the airplane.

Travel Blanket: Every flight I’ve taken in the last few years has been freezing cold. There are no blankets on board. Do yourself a favor and bring along your own.

Hoodie (zippered) for travel: Pro tip: See above about the chilly temperature on airplanes these days. Hoodies add an extra layer of protection (plus extra pockets for lip balm, earphones, water bottle, etc).

Extra Hawaii travel tip! What’s in your carry-on bag? It’s easy! Pack two light, thin outfits in your carry-on: a light sundress, casual sandals, shorts, a t-shirt, and a bathing suit. If your luggage goes missing, this is all you need (really)!

The flight times to Hawaii from the US mainland (and beyond) vary, depending on your closest airport and your connecting airport (if you have one).  

If you think the non-stop flight is too long, consider a connection, which will give you an hour or two to relax between flights and prepare for your vacation in paradise! If you happen to have lounge access, you can chill out in an airport lounge and enjoy a snack while you wait for your connection. In addition to airline lounges (such as American Airlines’ Admiral’s Club), there are also AMEX’s Centurion Lounge and Priority Pass lounges.

Some travelers who fly from the east coast of the United States prefer to spend a day or two in California (or another city) before continuing their trip to Hawaii. Whichever you prefer, it’s always a good idea to research flights, times, and duration before booking!

23 Best Places to Stay in Waikiki, Hawaii

I have personally stayed in many hotels across the Hawaiian islands, and I genuinely appreciate Hawaii and love learning about the culture and the history of the people who live there. As a travel writer, I often write about Hawaii for USA Today and other websites and outlets, and I’ve also contributed to several Hawaii guidebooks (for the islands of Oahu and Kauai).

When you visit Hawaii, you definitely want to stay at a hotel on the beach (or very close to) the beach. The good news is that Waikiki is home to many beachfront hotels that face the Pacific Ocean, so you’re always steps from the sand. And of course, these hotels and resorts offer tremendous views of those world-famous Waikiki waves and Diamond Head state monument.

1. Hilton Hawaiian Village

The Hilton Hawaiian Village has everything you could want for a vacation. This sprawling resort (HHV for short) has multiple high-rise towers, five swimming pools, tropical gardens, a number of restaurants and cafes (at all price points) and even a luau on the property. It is on the beach, and it also has a private lagoon with beach chairs and toys available.

You’ll see many shops here selling gifts, beach gear, art, jewelry, clothing, and souvenirs. You will not need to go far to find just about anything!

Although this is a massive resort, and it’s good for families, for couples especially, I recommend staying at the Al’i tower, because it has a separate front desk and lobby for check-in, which was way less crowded than the “main” check-in area and offers more personalized service. I’ve recently stayed at this tower and was thrilled to learn it also has its own swimming pool (not crowded — ever), a pool bar for drinks (with a TV if you want to watch the big game), and light bites with views of the beach. Ask for a room with a lanai facing the ocean so you can enjoy beautiful sunsets (and spectacular fireworks on Friday nights)!

Pro Tip: Hilton Hawaiian Village is large and can feel very busy at times. But overall, with all the amenities and conveniences, it’s a great choice for Waikiki.

2. Halekulani

Halekulani On the Beach at Waikiki is a posh upscale resort — a five-star oasis from the moment you enter the hotel. The Halekulani is tranquil with minimalist, classic décor throughout. Their legendary restaurant, House Without A Key, has just been renovated in 2022, and features a new menu and Hawaiian music every night at sunset. The other onsite dining experiences, Orchids and the award-winning La Mer, are not to be missed, as the executive chef from Italy oversees the exceptional menus throughout the hotel. Their swimming pool area is a peaceful retreat and features a beautiful mosaic-tiled cattleya orchid at the bottom of the pool — made from over a million tiles!

Guest rooms at the Halekulani Waikiki have been recently refurbished and feature modern amenities within a classic setting. I’ve stayed here a number of times and love the oceanfront rooms facing the beach for spectacular views, day and night! For a nightcap, sip a cocktail while enjoying live jazz music at Lewers Lounge, tucked away in the back of the property.

Pro tip: For a less extravagant, yet still exclusive, top-notch experience, stay at the Halepuna hotel across the street. It’s the sister property to the Halekulani and opened just a few years ago.

3. Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani

Across the narrow street from the Halekulani hotel is the Halepuna – the Halekulani’s sister property that may not be beachfront, but it offers the same upscale service and some of the fabulous amenities. The Halepuna also has a unique art collection throughout the lobby and in some public spaces. The Halepuna’s rooftop infinity pool is lovely, with a jacuzzi, plenty of lounge chairs, views of the ocean, and a full bar so you can sip on those tropical hand-crafted cocktails while sunbathing.

Rooms are new, modern and bright, with small lanai. The upper floors have views of the beach! The Halepuna has a new restaurant, the Halekulani Bakery that just re-opened in December 2022, and it features a robust selection of fresh baked goods and a small dining menu as well.

Pro tip: Guests who stay at the Halepuna can sign for their food and beverages at the Halekulani, just a few steps away.

4. Prince Waikiki Resort

Overlooking the marina, the Prince Hotel offers guests an incredible view all day, and especially at sunset. Guestrooms are spacious and modern with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the water. Away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, about a 15 minute walk to everything, the Prince hotel is situated near the Ala Moana Center, Ala Moana Beach Park and the trendy Kaka’ako neighborhood. The hotel offers two great restaurants, 1000 Sails and Katsumidori Sushi Tokyo, as well as a large lobby with a coffee shop and several stores. The pool is a great spot to relax, with a bar and an abundance of lounge chairs and cabanas.

Pro Tip: Opt to stay in a Prince Club Room with access to the (very cool) lounge – it’s indoor-outdoor and offers breakfast, and food options throughout the day, including dinner.

5. Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort

Often called the “Pink palace of the Pacific,” the Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, is the second-oldest hotel in Hawaii and known for its elegance, beauty and history. Opened in 1927, it’s situated in the center of Waikiki, with many fabulous rooms with lanai that face the beach. This resort is home to the world-famous beachfront Mai Tai bar, considered the best spot in Waikiki for a cocktail at sunset, and the Azure restaurant offers exceptional cuisine and lovely tables that are steps from the sand. For a great breakfast, the Surf Lanai opens early. The Royal Hawaiian center is steps away and offers a fabulous selection of shops, many showcasing locally-made Hawaiian products and small islander-owned businesses.

6. Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort and Spa

Built in 1901, the gorgeous and stately Moana Surfrider is the oldest hotel in Hawaii and known as the “First Lady of Waikiki.” Just off the sand, the lovely courtyard outside is home to the restaurant, the Beachhouse, and it’s a fantastic spot for a cocktail or dinner. You can also enjoy afternoon tea here on the weekends. Don’t be surprised to see a bride and groom or two as you walk through the lobby, as it’s a favorite spot for elegant beachfront weddings.  

Rooms and suites at this hotel are a variety of sizes, and the pool is a few steps from the ocean. And be sure to sign up for the free historical tour when you arrive – it’s not to be missed!

Pro Tip: Enjoy a break sitting in the white rocking chairs on the front porch of the Moana Surfrider resort and people-watch, and be sure to have a drink or snack under the beautiful banyan tree in the courtyard.

7. Sheraton Waikiki

For panoramic views of Waikiki beach and Diamond Head monument, you can’t beat the Sheraton Waikiki. This hotel was recently renovated in 2021 and all the rooms have been redesigned and updated – so everything feels brand new. This hotel is massive, with lots of shopping and a convenience store right in the lobby. Although it feels busy, but you can find several places to sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful oceanfront vistas.

Families love the Sheraton Waikiki especially because of the sprawling main pool deck that features a water slide, and adults flock to the infinity pool, the only one overlooking the beach in Waikiki. When you’re ready to eat, you have plenty of choices here – including the outdoor Edge of Waikiki for lunch and the stylish RumFire for dinner.

Pro Tip: Choose an oceanfront room facing Diamond Head for the best views!

8. Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach

Featuring its famous pointed A-frame entrance that welcomes guests into the open-air lobby, the Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach has been a unique landmark on Waikiki beach since the 1950s. It’s been recently renovated in 2021 so the rooms are all new inside — spacious and contemporary, many with lanai overlooking the ocean. The décor is neutral with splashes of seafoam green. The main lobby is spacious, with plenty of seating, and a well-known restaurant, Kani Ka Pila Grille is very popular and features casual cuisine and nightly Hawaiian music.

Pro tip: A new restaurant is scheduled to open here very soon – right on the beach with amazing views of Waikiki and Diamond Head!

9. Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort

Not to be confused with the Outrigger Reef hotel (see description above), the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort is in the middle of Waikiki. So if you want to be in the center of it all — choose the Outrigger Hotel, as it’s perched on the beach and just next door to the beautiful and historic Royal Hawaiian resort.

The rooms are various sizes and many have ocean views with a lanai. The Outrigger also has a small exhibit area of legendary surf memorabilia just off the lobby. It’s also home to the famous Dukes bar and restaurant, which you won’t want to miss. It’s often busy, and they have live music frequently. If you’re lucky, you can score a seat at the bar, and order food from there.

Pro Tip: The Outrigger has a great, airy lounge located just above the beach level, for club-level guests that offers plenty of unobstructed ocean views and excellent food for breakfast and dinner.

10. Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach

Just a few steps from the beach with awesome views and amenities, the Alohilani greets guests with its jaw-dropping, two-story floor-to-ceiling aquarium in the center of the lobby. This hotel was recently refurbished and feels very modern and new, and the rooms have contemporary decor and lanai — many with ocean views.

Their expansive swimming pool deck is spacious, with an abundance of lounge chairs and cabanas (and ocean views, too)! For food lovers, two Morimoto restaurants are located in this hotel, and since this hotel is so centrally-located, many other restaurants are nearby. The Alohilani Resort Waikiki Beach is across the street from the world-famous Kuhio beach and the Duke Kahanamoku statue, and it’s an easy walk to just about everything in Waikiki.

Pro Tip: The Alohilani has an awesome indoor-outdoor and spacious club, the Longboard lounge, so ask for access to this when you arrive!

11. Queen Kapiolani hotel Waikiki Beach

Located close to the zoo and aquarium, the Queen Kapiolani hotel is situated on a quiet end of Waikiki. It features an expansive lobby with splashes of bright colors and tropical-inspired murals. This mid-century modern landmark offers amazing views of Diamond Head State Monument, and rooms with a variety of layouts and sizes (some have lanai and kitchenettes), so be sure to ask for a room that overlooks this stunning landmark.

The Queen Kapiolani is also home to several shops and cafes in the lobby, a large workout facility, and the Deck Bar and Grill, a fun, lively outdoor restaurant that’s popular with locals and visitors alike, and frequently features live music. It also offers stellar views of Diamond Head, too, so you can enjoy this magnificant vista as you relax by the pool!

12. Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger

The Beachcomber by Outrigger is in the center of Waikiki, just across the street from the Royal Hawaiian Center and next door to the city’s busy International Marketplace. This high-rise features almost five hundred rooms of different sizes, many with beach views. There’s a fun pool right off the main lobby with plenty of seating, and steps away is the famous Maui Brewing, an ideal indoor-outdoor spot for lunch or dinner, with a casual menu and live music here often. If you’re seeking a fun hotel in middle of everything, this is the spot for you!

Pro Tip: This hotel has a fun, lively coffee shop with delicious food at the top of the escalators in the main lobby. It’s called Hawaii Aroma Café.

13. Ritz Carlton Waikiki

The Ritz Carlton Waikiki is luxury at its finest. Although this property is a few blocks away from the beach, they make up for it in many ways. The rooms and suites vary in size, and some have multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as gourmet kitchens with luxury appliances – including a washer and dryer. The stunning swimming pool area features several pools – all facing the ocean so and you can see all the way to the waves.  There are no buildings in front of this hotel, so you have an unobstructed beach view!

The Ritz Carlton Waikiki also features several excellent restaurants – all with indoor-outdoor seating.

Pro Tip: The Ritz Carlton Waikiki also offer guests free chairs and towels for the beach at the valet area – an excellent perk so you don’t need to bring your own!

14. Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa

Across the street from Waikiki Beach and in the center of the action, the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa is a great choice for a place to stay. It’s just across the street from the famous “Duke” statue, which is Kuhio beach, and the busiest in Waikiki.

It’s also located on a historical spot — exactly where Queen Lili‘uokalani’s summer home was located many years ago.

This hotel is massive and luxurious with a number of differently configured suites and rooms (most with balconies – lanai). Sizes and views vary, so be sure to ask questions. There’s a huge, new pool deck, spa and plenty of shopping at this hotel. Depending on where your room is located, it can be a bit of a walk to the beach, even though it’s technically across the street!

Pro Tip: The rooftop pool at the Marriott Waikiki Beach has just been renovated and features a sprawling sun deck, ocean views, cabanas, kids’ splash pad — and a great outdoor restaurant, Queensbreak. The restaurant is located in the back of the pool deck and features live music and excellent food day and night. If you aren’t staying here, you can check out the pool deck if you’re dining at Queensbreak!

15. Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort

With over 1,000 rooms and suites, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort is a landmark destination just steps away from the main beach in Waikiki, Kuhio.

Every room at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort has a lanai, which is an excellent perk! The rooms and suites have been newly redesigned and are modern with minimalist decor. It’s important to note that there are many sizes, configurations and views, so be sure to do your research before booking. Of course, Ocean View is always best, but this property has plenty of beautiful view options.

Pro Tip: This hotel has several in-house restaurants, including SHOR and SWIM (beach bar), but you can walk to many others.

16. Twin Fin Waikiki

The Twin Fin Waikiki is an oceanfront destination and formerly named the Aston Waikiki Beach hotel. This new property re-opened in early 2023 after a major renovation.

Everything is brand new in all the rooms — the design, furniture and amenities. This hotel has a Waikiki surf theme and is situated just across the street from the beach, so it’s a very easy walk to the waves. There’s also shops, restaurants and activities steps away. The rooms are perfectly sized for couples and families, as they offer one, two and three-bedroom options. Be sure to ask about availability.

Pro Tip: Twin Fin Waikiki is home to the famous Tiki’s Bar and Grill, a fun Waikiki restaurant with a menu that has “something for everyone.” It’s indoor-outdoor and overlooks the beach with great views — especially at sunset! There’s live music here on most nights, and it gets crowded on weekends.

17. Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach

Just a few steps away from the beach. yet in the middle of the action, the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach is an under-the-radar hotel with a lot to offer. It’s essential to know that, as the name states, all rooms here are suites with kitchenettes, so you’re getting a larger space no matter which room size you choose. Of course, prices vary, depending on the views and sizes of the actual suites.

Extra perks here include a gorgeous pool deck, free (hot) breakfast, and laundry facilities for guests (a big plus)! There’s also tons of restaurants, bars, and shops just outside the door.

Pro Tip: Live entertainment several nights a week at the Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Pakini bar.

18. Espacio: The Jewel of Waikiki

For an ultra-luxurious experience, look no further than the Espacaio: The Jewel of Waikiki. I have personally toured this property and it’s certainly a memorable and exceptional place to stay. This is an extremely high-end, customized experience in a luxury hotel setting. This hotel is fairly new (built about three years ago) and has only nine super-premium suites. There are modern, multi-room apartments that feel brand new and feature several bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and a massive lanai with jaw-dropping ocean views.

These sprawling apartment-style suites feel more like homes and are ideal for families who desire luxury — all the way. Everything is customized from start to finish, ensuring your visit in Hawaii is truly a one-of-a-kind and luxurious experience.

If you stay here, you’ll want to dine at the incredible Mugen restaurant! It’s a small restaurant and reservations are required. (I dined here when it first opened and it’s truly an experience)!

Pro Tip: This property offers the use of luxury cars, too.

19. Shoreline Hotel Waikiki

Colorful and playful, the Shoreline Hotel in Waikiki is made for a fun and carefree Hawaiian vacation!

The Shoreline Hotel Waikiki is definitely a walk from the beach, but it has a lot to offer for visitors. From the moment you step into the lobby, you feel like you’re on vacation. The colorful rooms and suites are modern and splashy, the rooftop pool feels like a private oasis (with great city views), and there’s free coffee and sparkling water for guests in the lobby. It’s a small hotel, so you won’t be dealing with large lobbies and big crowds.

You’re also in the middle of the action with plenty of shopping, bars, and restaurants just outside the front door.

Pro Tip: Check out the amenities here, as they offer guests credit to the adjacent restaurant.

20. Coconut Waikiki Hotel

Located on the Ala Wai canal in Waikiki and several blocks away from the beach, the Coconut Waikiki Hotel is a quiet destination that’s a great budget-friendly choice. This hotel is especially good for families as the rooms are spacious and available in large suites and “double-doubles.”

This hotel has a heated swimming pool, beach towels, and barbecue grills for guests (and an outdoor patio for dining).

Pro Tip: This hotel has underground parking (for an additional fee). It’s not always easy to park in Waikiki, so this is a big plus!

21. Wayfinder Hotel

The Wayfinder Hotel in Waikiki is a new smaller property that’s situated several blocks away from the beach and located on the Ala Wai canal. This means that it’s several minutes’ walk to the world-famous Waikiki Beach and ideal for guests who are seeking a budget-friendly option at a new hotel.

This modern, newly-updated hotel has spacious, hip, yet basic rooms in different size options featuring a private lanai. The heated swimming pool area is a great place to hang out and enjoy some tropical cocktails in the afternoon or evening. The Wayfinder is also within walking distance to shops, bars, and plenty of restaurants. And if you’re into “brutalist” architecture, you’re in luck, as this hotel is one of the many Honolulu buildings featuring this very recognizable design. Note: Some guests say this hotel is still working out the kinks, so be sure to read the recent reviews before booking.

Pro Tip: This hotel also offers beach chairs and free beach towels.

22. Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach

The Hyatt Centric Waikiki is one of the newer, upscale, high-rise hotels in Waikiki that opened in 2020. This hotel has over 230 rooms and suites — and they are all are spacious and light-filled, with modern furnishings and amenities.

It’s a few minutes’ walk to the beach, but still centrally located in the heart of Waikiki (and there’s a Starbucks in the lobby) and it’s right in the middle of everything. The lovely, expansive lobby is on an upper floor with the hotel’s pool adjacent to it with great city and ocean views.

Pro Tip: Rooms don’t have outdoor lanai, but they DO have very large windows and awesome views. And this hotel is pet friendly!

23. Hotel Renew

This boutique, under-the-radar hotel is all about relaxation and finding your zen. It offers a quiet getaway a few steps from the beach.

I’ve stayed at this hidden gem on a solo trip, and it was a great experience. It feels like a safe, private residence — and the front desk staff is very helpful. The lobby is tiny, with a small coffee bar in the morning and cocktails in the evening, but it’s not a big gathering spot, so you won’t find crowds here or groups hanging out. The entrance is bit subdued, too — you may walk past this hotel and not even realize it’s there!

Rooms are comfortable and cozy with sleek, minimalist decor and upgraded bathrooms. This hotel also offers free beach towels and is pet friendly, too.

Pro Tip: Hotel Renew does not have a pool, but if you’re a beach person, that really doesn’t matter, as you’re super-close to the waves!

For starters, Oahu is an island. The island of Oahu is home to over one million people and about 400,000 of them live in the city of Honolulu, which is the state capital of Hawaii. Oahu is, by far, the busiest of the Hawaiian islands.

Waikiki is located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It’s a famous neighborhood in Honolulu, situated along Oahu’s southern shore and its world-famous beaches. You can see the majestic Diamond Head state monument from just about anywhere along Waikiki beach. Home to many high-rise hotels and resorts of all sizes, Waikiki is a central place to stay if you’re planning a vacation to Hawaii and want to experience Oahu.

Waikiki is also a busy place, as Honolulu has lots of tall buildings, businesses, restaurants, stores — and traffic. This means you have a wide selection of activities, cafes (from quick bites to upscale dining experiences), and sights to enjoy. Overall, Waikiki is a great place to visit in Hawaii if you love the beach, but also like to be close to casual and fine-dining restaurants, attractions, and nightlife. It’s also an excellent place to be if you don’t want to drive on your vacation.

What part of Waikiki is best? Anywhere on or near the beach in Waikiki is considered best. Waikiki is legendary for its gorgeous sandy beaches and turquoise ocean against the backdrop of the famous Diamond Head State Monument. It’s known for the best surf breaks in the world, with warm water, great weather year-round, and long, rolling waves.

Visitors don’t need to leave the beach to enjoy some fantastic activities. You can take surf lessons right on the beach from a Waikiki Beachboy (at multiple places), enjoy a traditional outrigger canoe ride, and take a cruise on a catamaran where you may spot turtles and other wildlife. Beachgoers can also rent a paddleboard (SUP), go snorkeling or take a dip in the aquamarine ocean.

Is Waikiki walkable?

Is Waikiki a walkable area? Yes! One of the best things about Waikiki is that it’s very walkable, so you can easily explore the area by strolling along the beach (in most places).

Keep in mind that Waikiki is busy! The nearby bustling streets are filled with high-end designer shops, restaurants, smaller boutiques and markets. If you do need a ride somewhere while you’re in Waikiki, there’s very easy access to taxis, rideshares, buses, and shuttles.

Can I stay in Waikiki without a car? Yes, absolutely! You do not need a car in Waikiki and in fact, I’ve stayed there many times myself without a car.

Do you need a car in Waikiki? Here’s how to figure that out: You don’t need a car if Waikiki IF you’re only staying in Waikiki for a few days OR if you have no plans or interest in seeing the rest of the island on your own. When you’re not walking, you can use a taxi, or a rideshare service, the Waikiki trolly, or take a tour of the island with a service that picks you up and drops you off from your hotel (or close by).

There are also many hotels in Waikiki that are a block or two away from the beach, and most are a very easy walk to restaurants, bars, stores and that lovely stretch of sand.

How many days do you need in Waikiki?

How many days do you need in Waikiki? Well, that depends on your travel plans and how much time you have!

If you’re a first-time visitor and want to visit Oahu as well as another Hawaiian island, I recommend spending at least three nights on Oahu to see the main attractions: Pearl Harbor (which will take up most of a full day); hike Diamond Head (several hours to hike in the morning); and visit the North Shore (a full day) or just relax and enjoy Waikiki Beach (you can swim, surf or take lessons, and/or take an outrigger canoe ride.

Many Hawaii visitors love Oahu and stay in Waikiki for their entire vacation. It’s easy because you don’t need a car in Waikiki, but you can choose to rent a car for a day or two to explore the island.

There’s really no “correct” answer to how many days do you need in Waikiki, but for a first-time visitor who is also going to another island, I personally recommend three days to see and do as much as you can!

How much is Uber from the airport to Waikiki?

How much is Uber or Lyft from the HNL airport to Waikiki? The price actually depends on which hotel you are going to, and the time of day you are arriving.

Honolulu and Waikiki have a lot of traffic, especially at rush hour. So don’t be surprised to find the highway very crowded — similar to Los Angeles or New York.

As a general rule, from the HNL airport (Daniel K. Inouye International Airport) to Waikiki, you can get an Uber or Lyft for “about” $35 for the closest hotels (these hotels include the Outrigger Reef, the Ritz Carlton, and Prince Waikiki (and that surrounding area).

There are several other options from the airport to Waikiki. You can book a shuttle in advance or at the counter at the airport. It’s great for groups and makes it very easy to get around. The downside to the shuttle is that you must wait for the driver to drop off other passengers at their hotels before you reach your hotel.

Pro tip: The rideshare services (including Uber and Lyft) are not found on the same level as baggage claim at the Honolulu airport. If you choose to take a rideshare service, you will need to pick up your bags and then take the elevator (or escalator) upstairs to the exits and wait for your driver there. The taxis and shuttles ARE located on the ground floor.

Waikiki is an excellent choice for visitors who like to be in the middle of the action, with easy access to the beach, restaurants, cafes and nightlife. You can also find a multitude of great outdoor activities nearby – just steps away from your hotel. Also, just about any tour you decide to take will pick you up in Waikiki, so there’s no need for a car!

All of the things to do below are either located in Waikiki — or Waikiki is a meeting point.

Enjoy an idyllic cruise on a catamaran right from Waikiki beach — and then jump in the ocean to snorkel! Hawaii’s Kaka’ko restaurants offer a great food scene in Honolulu

Food lovers agree that Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene in Hawaii. The Kaka’ako neighborhood is busy, as a lot of new restaurants and businesses have opened in recent years. This area is very close to Honolulu’s Waikiki neighborhood, and has become a vibrant and fun place to go, day or night. You will see mostly locals here, as it’s still considered a bit off-the-beaten-track from the main touristy areas of Waikiki, yet it’s becoming more popular with visiting foodies and those who love to explore.

Kaka’ko: What you need to know

The Kaka’ako neighborhood is easy to get to from Waikiki. It’s located only a few short miles away from Waikiki (and an easy uber ride!) Everything is walkable once you get there. You can easily walk there, or it’s about a 10 or 15-minute drive from Waikiki, depending on the time of day. (Note: rush hour here is busy!)

This cool neighborhood has been transformed from an industrial area into a lively art and culinary destination over the past several years. What’s more, this urban community is now home to many high-rise apartments and condo buildings, along with independently-owned hip boutiques, eclectic shops, bars, breweries, and much more. Kaka’ako is sophisticated, yet still edgy. So there’s a lot to see and do in this exciting area!

The Kaka’ako neighborhood’s restaurants are some of Hawaii’s best

Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene across the island. The best place to start exploring this part of town is the SALT at Our Kaka’ako complex. It’s home to a number of bustling restaurants, specialty stores, coffee shops, and casual cafes. This is a list of several top dining destinations for foodies in Kaka’ako. I’ve visited this neighborhood a number of times and have personally dined at all the restaurants in this post!

Margotto Hawaii

One of the newest and most talked about restaurants in the Kaka’ako neighborhood is the fabulous and memorable Margotto Hawaii restaurant, where I had the opportunity to dine recently. This multi-award-winning restaurant’s cuisine is an unforgettable fusion of Japanese with an Italian and French flair. This exceptional food-lover’s destination features a truly unique, multi-course tasting experience where truffles are the star of the show. So, if you love truffles and are ready for an incredible dining adventure — Margotto is not to be missed!

Margotto Hawaii’s menu is filled with delights accented with a variety of rare truffles, sourced from Italy and other destinations. The delicacies here are carefully prepared by the award-winning chef duo, the Kayama brothers, who will tantalize your taste buds with incredible textures and flavors. One of our favorites (pictured below) is the cacao e pepe with homemade tagiolini with butter and cheese. Be sure to choose the wine pairing, as the wines are perfectly matched to this unforgettable menu. Margotto Hawaii is an authentic experience meant to be enjoyed and savored, so be sure to add this to your must-visit Hawaii experiences.

Moku Kitchen

Another popular Kaka’ako restaurant is Moku Kitchen, and it has a menu filled with authentic upcountry specialties. This stylish eatery has a robust menu with many favorites, including Kalua pork and pineapple hand-tossed pizza; fresh island fish tacos made with mahi-mahi; and steak with house-cut fries. Don’t skip the sides, as the Jalapeno mashed potatoes are a best-seller. The house-made desserts include strawberry cream pie and chocolate mac nut. (And this family-friendly spot has a children’s menu as well).

Redfish Poke Bar

Redfish Poke bar by Foodland is another Kaka’ako restaurant with an assortment of inventive Fresh poke bowls, salads, and other fresh dishes, as well as signature cocktails and more. Chef Reid Matsumura, an Oahu native, serves up a contemporary version of island classics. Several popular dishes include okonomiyaki fries, made with scallions, furikake and pickled ginger; miso shiso wings with lemon and miso glaze; and lechon kawali, pork belly with onion, soy, nuoc cham sauce and tomato. 

Highway Inn Kaka’ako

For a traditional taste of the islands, check out Highway Inn Kaka’ako, a family-run restaurant that’s been in business since the 1940s. Their signature Hawaiian-style menu features a variety of classic plates, such as their Hawaiian moco, which is pork (or chicken) lau lau with beef stew gravy, topped with an egg and lomi salmon. One specialty is the sun noodle fried yakisoba is a stir fry with locally-made noodles and spam, green onions, and a fish cake. This restaurant’s plantation mixed plate features Pulehu boneless short ribs, grilled chicken, and panko-crusted island fish that’s accompanied by a generous portion of furikaka rice.

Oahu’s Kaka’ako is the best for coffee, chocolate and hot dogs!

Oahu’s Kaka’ako neighborhood has the best food scene, and the best coffee and chocolate destination, too. This hidden gem of a neighborhood has a number of unexpected options, too, such as Hanks Haute dogs, a casual spot with an array of gourmet hot dogs and creative toppings.

Kaka’ako is a great place to find some locally-made favorites to bring home, too, such as tasty specialties from the Lonohana estate chocolate shop with products made with all-natural, organic ingredients; and Morning Brew for fresh coffee, tea, pastries, and more.

Kaka’ako’s beer scene is fabulous

Kaka’ako is home to several breweries within walking distance, including Aloha Beer Company. This neighborhood hotspot attracts repeat customers with a variety of rotating handcrafted offerings on tap made with local ingredients. This brewery restaurant has a friendly ambiance and multiple indoor / outdoor spaces. There is also a big, shaded beer garden with seating for nearly 100 guests — and a “secret” speakeasy with a whimsical, rock n roll vibe. 

Hawaii’s Kaka’ako farmer’s market is one of the island’s best

Oahu’s Kaka’ako Farmers Market, is held in Ward Village every Saturday morning. This award-winning market features an abundance of fresh food products (and more) sourced from the local community. This means that it’s an ideal place to get an authentic “taste” of the islands.

You’ll find local fruits, vegetables, and homemade specialties, as well as tasty baked goods and more great food! All of these vendor stalls are owned by locals. These individuals are passionate about sharing their products and honoring native Hawaiian culture through fresh ingredients.

And if you’re up for more shopping, you’re in luck! Ward Village has over 100 stores selling art, jewelry, flowers, clothing, as well as one-of-a-kind souvenirs. 

Admire Kaka’ako colorful murals around the neighborhood

In addition Kaka’ako’s fantastic food scene and great restaurants, it’s also an art-filled haven for artists. Visitors will immediately notice the many massive and memorable colorful murals painted on the sides of warehouses and other businesses. This is courtesy of Pow Wow Hawaii, a collective led by founder Jasper Wong. This innovative group invites artists from the islands and around the globe to decorate the structures annually, and it’s always an exciting event!

Currently, there are many splashy murals adorning the sides of buildings. So, you can easily spend a few hours wandering and admiring the art. It’s an exciting way to stroll the neighborhood, as you’ll always be surprised with the variety of artwork that’s just around the corner.

Oahu’s Kaka’ako is a beachfront location

Although Kaka’ako is an urban neighborhood, it’s a quick walk to the waves. So, if you wish to take a beach break while you’re enjoying the area, just walk over to the Kaka’ako Waterfront Park. There, you’ll find wide open space and a great spot to relax, have a picnic, and enjoy the lovely Hawaiian scenery. You can see the hotels and skyline of Waikiki in the distance, too.

It’s adjacent to the Ala Moana Beach Park, which is also popular with SUP paddleboarders and kayakers who use this area as a launching pad.

Summary: The best way to visit the Kaka’ako neighborhood

When you’re visiting Oahu and wish to see something outside of Waikiki beach, the Kaka’ako neighborhood is a fantastic place to explore! Ideally, it’s a spot for a half-day of fun. In the morning, you can start with breakfast at a local Kaka’ako cafe, and check out the murals and shops. Or, visit in the afternoon, where you can stroll around and admire the many murals, browse around the many independently-owned shops — and then plan for a fabulous dinner (and after-dinner drinks, too)!

Keep in mind the neighborhood is popular, especially in the evening, so be sure to make your restaurant reservations in advance!

(And most are thankfully doing well!) The guidebooks also offer practical travel advice and important things to know along the way.

Hawaii travel in 2023

I’ve traveled to Hawaii many times over the years, most recently in the fall of 2022. Just like the rest of the United States, Hawaii carefully monitors covid and most hotels make sure their cleanliness policy exceeds expectations but the state does not currently have any restrictions in place.

Waikiki hotels featured in the guidebooks

While in Oahu, Hawaii, I spent my time visiting nearly every hotel in Waikiki and staying in four different hotels during my visit. I updated every hotel that is listed in the Oahu book. If you’re seeking a place to stay in Waikiki, check out my blog post on this topic with details about many hotels that I have personally stayed in! On my recent trips to Hawaii and Waikiki, I spent a few days at the luxurious beachfront Halekulani resort and the newer Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani across the street. As the name suggests, the Halepuna is a sister property to the Halekulani, which is situated just steps away, it’s home to the Halekulani Bakery and an awesome pool deck overlooking the ocean. I took the photo below of the beautiful view from the lanai of my room at the Halekulani hotel. I also stayed at the Alohilani resort (across the street from Kuhio beach and the famous Duke statue, The Prince Hotel Waikiki and Hilton Hawaiian Village on my recent visits to Hawaii.

All of the hotel listings in the Fodor’s guidebooks contain brief summaries that include a description and a few of the property’s pros and cons. 

In addition to my time spent in Hawaii this year (and several previous trips in recent years), I made sure my contributions to the books were accurate and as up-to-date as possible. I keep in touch with many Hawaii-based friends who were kind enough to keep me posted about news related to tourism – after I had flown back home. 

During the writing and updating process, I visited Hawaii several times and made sure to stay in contact with my wonderful Hawaii friends and business associates to double (and triple-check) what was happening on the islands before officially submitting my sections of the chapters. There was a lot of activity going on behind the scenes. For example, during this time, some hotels, such as the Sheraton Waikiki and the Halekulani, took the opportunity to close their properties and undergo renovations — so check out those hotels’ amazing renovations and transformations!

Surfers who love to travel are in luck, as there are a wide variety of amazing surf breaks around the world. Beach lovers who dream of escaping to a wonderful surf destination can choose from an abundance of the best surfing destinations across the globe.

If you are seeking tropical, picturesque beaches in Hawaii, lush jungles of Costa Rica or sleepy shore towns along a European coastline, there’s a special surf break out there for everyone (beginner or advanced).

These beaches are known across the world for their exceptional breaks, distinctive scenery, and unique role in surfing history. So when you’re planning a getaway to catch your own “perfect wave,” consider these world-class beaches.

Waikiki Beach, Hawaii

With the majestic Diamond Head State Monument as a backdrop, Waikiki beach is a legendary surf spot, as the beautiful turquoise rolling waves offer seemingly endless fun rides on longboards. It’s all about the waves in Waikiki, you can easily rent a board as soon as you step on the sand and you’ll be paddling out (and learning to cross-step) in no time at all. Experienced instructors (traditionally called “Beach Boys” here) offer lessons at Waikiki Beach Services in front of the Royal Hawaiian Resort or other locations along this notoriously busy beach. You can surf year-round in Waikiki without a wetsuit, and summer traditionally brings larger swells. The best part? Everything is close-by: hotels, restaurants, shops, and fun, casual beach bars for that refreshing after-surf tropical cocktail.

Maui, Hawaii

The stunning Hawaiian island of Maui (also known as the “Valley Isle”) is a premier surfing destination offering an array of great places to catch waves—surrounded by palm trees, mountains, and crystal blue water. Home to several world-class surfing events that draw tons of avid fans, Maui’s biggest waves crash at Pe’ahi (famously known for the massive “Jaws” surf break). For casual surfers or to take surfing lessons, be sure to check out Goofy Foot surf school near the bustling town of Lahaina or Maui Surfer Girls at Ukumehame Beach Park. You’ll find Maui’s beaches to be magnificent, with tropical jaw-dropping scenery.

Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii

The island of Oahu’s famous north shore is known far and wide in the surf community for its massive winter waves, and it’s the location for several major surfing competitions that draw pros and spectators from around the world. Annually from November to March, the waves at Banzai Pipeline and other area breaks are incredible and can reach well over 35 feet high. As such, only experienced surfers should hit the water in the winter. If you plan to go, start out early because this area gets a lot of traffic when the surf is pumping. In summer, however, the waters here are usually calm and mellow—ideal for a tranquil beach day with some snorkeling or stand-up paddleboarding. Most north shore beaches offer some type of basic facilities, such as picnic tables, showers, and restrooms, but it’s best to check in advance.

Huntington Beach (Surf City, USA), California

Famously known as “Surf City, USA,” Huntington Beach is located about an hour’s drive south of Los Angeles and offers a big dose of the cool Southern California beach vibe that surfers and beachgoers crave. If you know your stuff, you can show off your expertise by paddling out by the pier near the center of town—or you can sign up for lessons at schools in the area. The ocean here is chilly, so plan to wear a wetsuit most of the year.

When you’re not hanging out on the beach, you can keep busy with a number of ocean-related activities. Check out some local surf shops to purchase your own board—and don’t miss the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum for some fascinating surf history.

Punta de Mita, Mexico

Tranquil and rustic, with expansive beaches, the lovely Punta de Mita is a truly awe-inspiring coastal region in mainland Mexico. It’s home to several popular surfing beaches with sapphire water and golden sand, including La Bahia (“The Cove”), Palmitas, and La Lancha, which is considered the most consistent wave in the area. This shoreline has breaks that are optimal for both long and short-boarders, so be sure to do a bit of research before choosing your location.

Situated about 40 miles from Puerto Vallarta, Punta de Mita is an ideal day trip that’s not far from the city—and lessons and board rentals can be arranged at a variety of local surf shops. To schedule lessons in advance or to get your specific surf questions answered, check out SurfMex.

La Jolla, California

Further down the California coast is the lovely, laid-back town of La Jolla, home of the famous “Windansea” surf break, a historical spot that’s steeped in surf culture. Although this wave is for experienced ocean riders only, it’s fun to admire the surf from the paved walkway that stretches above the beach, with access points tucked away in a residential neighborhood (though there are no facilities here). For those who wish to surf easier conditions, head to La Jolla Shores, an area on the northern part of town that’s beginner-friendly and features several places to rent boards and take lessons (including Surf Diva). This area is usually crowded with shops and there are plenty of amenities, food stands, and restrooms.

Portugal

With over 1,000 miles of dramatic coastline, Portugal is home to several picturesque surf breaks up and down the stunning shore, providing an array of beaches that draw avid surfers all year long. From rugged and rocky ocean-scapes to wide sandy coves, Portugal is a fantastic destination for beach lovers and avid shredders. In winter, adventurous big wave pros head to Nazare, a town that’s famous for some of the largest and most powerful waves in the world. There are also a number of surf camps based throughout the country that caters to all levels, so it’s easy to find lessons on a beach that offers plenty of practice time.

Portugal’s many surf towns offer something unique, and each has its own personality. One of the most well-known is Cascais, which is an easy train ride from Lisbon and can be reached within 30 minutes. Another picturesque area, Sesimbra, is also within driving distance of the city. Keep in mind the Atlantic Ocean is very chilly, so expect to wear a wetsuit even on sunny days during the summer months.

Bali, Indonesia

Many surfers consider Bali to be the ultimate surf destination, as this tropical locale offers exceptional surfing year-round at 60 different left-hand and right-hand breaks. Overall, the calm, relaxed ambiance attracts surfers and beach lovers from across the world. For travelers, there’s an added bonus: Prices are budget-friendly, there are plenty of affordable guesthouses and local cafes, and you’ll meet many other passionate surfers of all ages from around the world. Bali’s lovely, aquamarine surf breaks are exceptionally beautiful, yet varied, so surfers of all levels will most certainly find their own favorite places here.

Costa Rica

Surfers know why Costa Rica is often referred to as the “happiest place on earth.” This country boasts some of the best surfing on earth with waves crashing against golden sand and isolated beaches right next to lush rainforests. On the Caribbean coast, one of the more famous surf breaks is Puerto Viejo in the southeast, with its massive waves that are best during the dry season (November to April). One of the country’s best-known spots is Witch’s Rock, a favorite for beginners and intermediates that’s best from December to March. With a variety of surf camps (including many women-only surf camps), it’s easy to find a surfing beach that’s ideal for your lifestyle and level – and there are plenty of opportunities to advance your skills.

Morocco

In northern Africa, Morocco is an exceptional year-round surfing destination, as it offers varied waves along its unique coastline that faces both northwest and southwest. October to April attracts surfers of all levels from around the world, but for those who are seeking larger, more powerful swells, it is best to go in the mid-winter season. Visitors adore the laid-back surf vibe in the coastal towns and keep returning for the vast selection of tranquil surfing beaches.

A few of the well-known challenging breaks are La Source, Safi, and Anchor Point. For beginners and intermediate surfers, Essaouira and Hash point are two of the more mellow spots. There are a number of shops along the beach that rent boards. The water is cold here so a wetsuit is a must, even in warm weather.

Bondi Beach, Australia

One of the most legendary surfing beaches in Australia is the world-famous Bondi beach. Situated about 4 miles from the center of Sydney, it’s a major tourist attraction and often the first stop when visitors arrive in the city. It’s also a favorite for locals, too. With jaw-dropping views, crystal-blue waves (with lefts and rights), and a consistent swell year-round, it’s no surprise that Bondi draws passionate surfers who wish to catch waves at this iconic warm-water destination throughout the year. In addition to the surf and sand, Bondi is also famous for the lively culture, as it’s home to bars, restaurants, boutique shops, food markets, and lovely hiking trails.
